Hail Mary?! That was a “dime” that only one person had a chance to catch! That may be the most precise throw under those conditions you will ever see. Definitely not a heave toward the endzone as a hope and prayer that has come to be known as a “Hail Mary”.
The Stockton family is very, very well thought of here in Rabun County. Rob Stockton is certainly a gentleman. Gunner is a timid Hero here that doesn’t beat his chest. I’ve not had the pleasure and honor of meeting Gunner in person though I hope to in the off season.
My wife and I have a bit of a connection to Rob Stockton. You could say we wouldn’t be here in Rabun County without him. And I’ll let Yall figure that out.
I Love seeing people that are perceived as a bit of a underdog do well. People like Gunner are not in the prototypical mold you might say though he actually ranked pretty high coming out of HS. I’m no expert or coach just a typical fan but I thought his HS stats should have made him a solid. “ across the board “ 5 star but some agencies had him as a 4 some had him as a 5.
I don’t know Why I just felt in my heart that he was gonna do well if given a chance to get his footing no pun intended. So I’m thankful ( I’m very sure Gunner is) that Kirby gave him the opportunity.
There was some background noise from a few criticizing him on anything and everything they could think of. On the game day thread there’s Still one guy but for him I think some how it’s personal as he goes waaaay to far.
Gunner might make mistakes going forward, he’s human, but you won’t see anyone give More effort to help our Dawgs win !! Up to and including putting his body in peril !! Knowing he’s about to take a vicious hit. I’ve often thought that that is one of the differences in a very good and great Wide Receiver. That great guy is gonna make that game winning catch Even when he knows the defender is gonna level him !!
Though Gunner is a very important and intricate part I Honestly think that as a TEAM these Dawgs can win the National Title. That’s ALL of them playing their very best football.
Early on I’d have thought that was a sweet dream but Maybe not realistic. Now though I see our Dawgs being able to stand toe to toe with Any team in CFB !! Like other Dawgs teams in the past This team has formed a Very strong Brotherhood Bond. They play for each other, they build each other up. They have Excellent Unit Cohesion. They Love one another and that makes for a formidable football team or really Any unit in life where working Together smoothly is a Must !! Go Dawgs !!
A goal for our family has been for both of our kids to love the Lord,” Rob Stockton said. “I know that will seem like a cliché so much now, but we pray that they truly love the Lord, but do not have to tell people about it. Do you know what I mean by that? Where they will just look at you and can tell that you love the Lord. By your actions and then just your spirit. Not their words.”
Love that by Rob Stockton !! He’s referencing the Fruits Of The Spirit. Something any and All believers should long for people to “See” in them. That’s when your walking it not just talking it.
What I hope and pray to be remembered as, but I’ve got Tons of work to do and corrections that need to be made and painful refining that needs to take place. Im a work in process I can’t really say progress because I’ve made so many and terrible mistakes.
"….I can’t really say progress because I’ve made so many and terrible mistakes."
@navydawg we are all in that boat, but praise GOD we are redeemed by the sacrifice that he made for us, and paid the price for our terrible mistakes when we put our trust in Jesus Christ!
Romans 8:1-2.
Gunner has his priorities right…God first..then family…then UGA football and/or his herd of cattle..? LOL
AMEN !!!! You’re getting me all pumped up with the Lord !! The Spirit breathed on me when I read your comments !! I’m not trying to throw a poor poor pitiful me routine as I am SO Blessed. But I have allot of health issues and I Know I can’t have much more time left on this ole earth.
I dearly Love Dawgs football and Love the friendship of those who Love Dawgs football. But THE Love of the Lord is By Far more important !! The Bible says that our lives are but a vapor on this earth, like the dew on the morning grass it fades away so quickly when the sun shines upon it !!
Like Rob Stockton so eloquently stated I want people to SEE the Lord living in me And be drawn not to me but to HIM. My greatest regret was that I waited until 1992 to invite him in !! At age 35 led by a total stranger Not in Church I finally submitted. The gentleman had a little green New Testament that the Gideons used to give to Every military service member that Wanted one for free. Unless it’s been reinstated the Gideons are no longer allowed to do that and it’s been that way for a long time. I need to check and see if they have been restored that privilege. I Hope they have. But he read The Word to me and the Holy Spirit pricked my heart praise God !! My walk might look like a drunk man, but I’m still pressing on to that most high calling because of His Mercy and Grace !! God Bless You Brother and your family !! And All here !! I am So Blessed it’s Literally out of this world !! You Know what I mean !! 😀
A great article about a fantastic young man and his wonderful family. i would not want anyone else leading Georgia. We now know why his teammates were so excited when he entered the second half of the SEC Championship game. Every time I see a replay of his run in OT, I still cannot believe he held onto that ball when he took that shot. While I do not feel that it is necessary to denigrate Carson, Gunner is obviously a different kind of kid and leader. We are lucky to have him and hope we get to see him reach that next level in red and black next year and not the NFL. Here's to Gunner leading the Dawgs to big win tomorrow over Tech and back to another SEC Championship after Texas beats A&M. Go Dawgs!
I have no doubt that Georgia can win a championship this year with Gunner at QB. He will not be the reason we lose.
Praise the Lord! Your testimony is a blessing to us all, and a fitting way to bring a close to Thanksgiving Day!
One of the best articles I've read in a long time. Thank you.
When Gunner was in high school, I knew he was going to be Georgia's quarterback. When he was committed to South Carolina, I told everyone he was going to Georgia. He's done his job this season, very well, so far, but I believe the best is yet to come.
Go, Dawgs!
One of the best articles I've read in a long time. Thank you.
Gunner was destined to be quarterback for the Dawgs. He's done a very good job of it so far, but I believe the best is yet to come.
Go, Dawgs!
I think you are taking the term "Hail Mary" too literally (by football definitions). When it is 4th and 6 and you attempt a very low % fade route, for a 28 yard TD, that takes a perfect drop in the bucket pass (and just a little bit of a WR push off) THAT is a hail Mary pass. That play works probably 10% of the time. The fact that it was so low % and so unexpected in that situation is what probably allowed it to work. We all know GS is a good player. Do you expect him to throw a perfect pass in that or every/any situation every time? That was a do or die low % play. If that wasn't hail Mary why is that the unquestioned biggest play GS has made this season? Nothing else is even a close 2nd.
"A fade route is a deep passing route where a wide receiver runs towards the sideline corner of the end zone, and the quarterback throws a high-arcing pass for the receiver to catch."
@navydawg "There was some background noise from a few criticizing him on anything and everything they could think of. On the game day thread there’s Still one guy but for him I think some how it’s personal as he goes waaaay to far".
"Anything and everything"? I don't see anything that I've written below that is even mildly critical of GS. That is certainly not "way too far". Let's face it, for UGA (or any team any year) to win the championship the QB has to play extremely well and make plays. It will be no different for GS. That is the nature of the position. The OSU QB was 41/50 (82%) for 542 yd (271 yd/gm) for 4 TD's in OSU's 2 playoff games (wins) last year.
I don't know if you don't understand the difference between an evaluation and a criticism or you just have a reading comprehension problem. The only person I see being overly critical and taking it personal is you. At least I am man enough to say it to your face.
EVERY UGA fan EXPECTED GS to play as well as he has if not better than he has. This article reinforces why. He has been a QB forever. He has had personal coaching forever. He has natural skills. He works hard at getting better. For most of his HS career he was a 5* QB. He has been in the system for 3 years. For any UGA fan that has followed GS for the last 4 or 5 years this season has not bee a "Thank You, Lord" season. We all expected this.
Excuse me but where is your Username in ANY of my previous comments ? You lashed out at me for no tangible reason only an Assumption that I was referring to you. If I had been referring to You I’d have Quoted you by your User Name Right Here on THIS thread as I’m man enough to do that. But I wasn’t even vaguely referring to you.
Are you possibly having a Guilt issue over past comments ? I wasn’t referring to You in any fashion. Again if I had been I’d have quoted you. I’ve Deliberately stayed away from you as I don’t care for conflict. Quoting You: “The only person I see being overly critical and taking it personal is you.” At least I am man enough to say it to your face.” Your comment there referring directly to Me.
Had you seen what the person I Was referring to said it’s possible I don’t know how probable, that You might have been taken aback as well. I don’t know if you would have spoke out in defense of Gunner or not, only you know that. But quite a few Dawgs fans To Their Credit did speak out in Gunners defense to these what I call Trolls.
As I stated I thought pretty clearly in my previous comments I was referring to the Game Day Thread where it’s much more like a Chat than a forum. There was for a while Three posters going after Gunner as I said over “ Anything and Everything”. After they were belittled by quite a few Dawgs fans two stopped coming then only one came around on game day then after being ridiculed by quite a few he left to. He didn’t show up for the TX game.
To the best of my knowledge at least in the times I’ve been on That thread I’ve never seen you there and that’s perfectly fine. But you Wrongly Assumed I was speaking of You and instead of making a simple question Hey are you referring to me ? You launched into a tirade. There are several on this thread that I’m fairly confident know who I was talking about as They saw them there as well. Quoting you again: “ EVERY UGA fan EXPECTED GS to play as well as he has if not better than he has“ So your saying that You Know the mind of Every UGA fan ? And here You are yet again: “For any UGA fan that has followed GS for the last 4 or 5 years this season has not been a "Thank You, Lord" season. We all expected this.“ Although your comments show Faith in Gunner’s abilities based on his skill and experience Which I Agree With and are very complimentary of him how can you be able to speak the mind of “Any UGA fan” ? Isn’t that a bit pretentious on your part ? And on THIS thread I’d like to know what comment I made that was “ overly critical and personal” ? And Why do you have this Need to Teach others about the game of football ? I agree fully with GoodOlDawg I’ve always considered a Hail Mary pass to be one where the QB lobs a usually deep but I guess it could be shorter pass toward hopefully as many receivers as can get down to the end zone in the Hope one will catch it. Dawgs lost a game to TN by that very thing. I’ve Never heard a Hail Mary pass described as you did. Not saying your wrong as I haven’t looked up the definition of a Hail Mary pass. As best I understand Doug Flutie is the main person that made the term notable in football because I think one of the reasons it was thrown at Notre Dame’s field and it was considered sort of miraculous but I’m not a football historian.
I advised you quite a while back there are three ways to speak to people Up as if your intimidated by them, Down as if you feel your superior to them and across as if you feel Equal to them. You have a tendency of speaking to people like your some sort of authority on the game. Thus your tone is speaking Down to people. No doubt at all Down when speaking to Me !! Most people that I’ve met in life prefer to be spoken across to.
Once I even tried to peacefully offer you an olive branch to Try to resolve any issues between us and perhaps make a friendship which I Much Prefer. But you slapped that down faster than Dwight Phillips on track day !! You didn’t even attempt to be civil, you came right back with some cutting remark.
Now out of no where you attack me based on Assumptions when All you’d have had to done was ask. The people I was referring to never come on these regular daily threads that I’m aware of. In my view you owe me an apology but I won’t hold my breath.
Until your comment here I had steered clear of you Not because I’m intimidated by you or scared of you, but to try to keep the peace. YOU specifically called me out using my username. Go back and look at Your own comment you insulted me at least twice based on Assumptions. There was No real call for you to tag my UserName and proceed to insult me. Had I tagged your UserName and insulted you then you’d have every right. But I haven’t done that. Prior to this attack on me I read your comments but I don’t make any Replies on them and I don’t Vote either way on your comments.
You are angry at me without just cause pure and simple. I will resume ignoring you. And unless I Insult You or say something derogatory About or To you I’d really appreciate it if you’d not tag my UserName and Insult me.
I do the best I can ( maybe that’s not enough) to Try to get along with people Here and every where not because I Have to but because I was raised it’s the Right thing to do. More importantly I’m Trying to live my life for the Lord. And though I fail all to often, I’m Trying.
Those Trolls were saying vicious things about Gunner so Yes I stepped in to defend him and was blessed to have allot of good company in doing so.
OK I’m NOT trying to be a smart butt. But I used Google to search What is a Hail Mary Pass In Football ?
This is the response I was given: A "Hail Mary" in football is
a very long forward pass thrown in desperation with a low probability of success, typically as a last-ditch effort to score points when time is running out
. The term implies that the pass is a "prayer" for a miracle, stemming from its religious namesake. The play is often characterized by the quarterback throwing the ball as far as possible into the end zone towards a group of receivers, with the hope that one of them will catch it.
This is pretty much what GoodOlDawg and I said we thought was a Hail Mary Pass. There might be other definitions out there but if there are I’m not aware of them.
OK I was Wrong about the term Hail Mary Pass coming from a Doug Flutie pass. Not the first time I’ve been wrong and certainly won’t be the last. According to a Google Search it tells Who and again refers to it being a passed hurled toward the end zone with the Hope and Prayer that a receiver will catch it. Here is that info:
The term "Hail Mary pass" in football
originated from a 1975 playoff game when Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach threw a game-winning touchdown and, in a post-game interview, said, "I closed my eyes and said a Hail Mary"
. Staubach, a Catholic, was praying for divine intervention on the long, desperate pass to receiver Drew Pearson. While Staubach popularized the term, the concept of using the prayer for a desperation pass existed before, with some accounts pointing to Notre Dame football in the 1920s and 1930s.
The previous search shows more Definition of what a Hail Mary Pass is.
