I continue to see people blaming the “NCAA” for the current mess that is college football, but It seems clear that some don’t understand that the NCAA is nothing but an association that is directed by a Board of Governors made up primarily of the leadership of its University and College Members - Presidents, Chancellors, Athletic Directors, etc. for example the current Board of Governors includes Ole Miss Chancellor, Ohio State President, ACC Commisioner, Kansas Chancellor, etc. go to ncaa.org if you are interested in rest of board. FYI - UGA president Jere Morehead was on the Board from 2020-2024 and was in fact chair of the D-1 board of this “toothless tiger” organization for the last 3 years of his tenure.

In short, the NCAA is nothing but an administrator for the implementation policies created and adopted by the colleges and university members. They exist because the university and college members provide the funds for them to exist.

So let’s be clear about who is to blame for this current mess. The leaders of the member universities - Presidents, Chancellors, Athletic Directors, Conference Commissioners, etc. are to blame. Like Nero they collectively “fiddled while Rome burned”.

Welcome to the new age of college football. The players realize they finally get to share in the huge amount of money they generate and they’re going all in. Can’t blame them for being capitalists in a capitalistic society. In addition, the schools and their fans that would’ve never had a chance to win a championship under the old system (Indiana) are all in, so this is here to stay.

It seems clear now that Frazier’s agent was just playing schools against each other to get more money for Frazier, and let’s not forget more for themselves. We will never know whether the agent approached Ohio State to gauge their interest, or whether Ohio State “tampered” by contacting Frazier through family or friends. Either way it worked, and since there are no rules, I guess Coach Smart and staff just have to smile and take it. I gotta believe that there are moments when our Coach would like to say something like - there’s the door, don’t let it hit you in the ass on the way out.

if you want to see “pre-season OL plucked from the portal” you and everyone commenting on this site better get out the checkbook and send UGA Athletic Association a significant contribution. Those guys are currently being hired by Texas, Texas Tech, Ohio State, Oregon, Miami, LSU, etc. All of the schools mentioned are outspending UGA in portal by a lot.

The ncaa allowed it to happen without interference, or enforced strict guidlines in place to control this. So, as I see it, the ncaa had some control, but chose to turn a blind eye, and deaf ear to the situation. So it may not be totally their fault, but the ncaa is guilty of being part of the equation for letting this get so far out of hand that it'll need a complete overhaul of the system to fix it. Probably wont matter anyway, at the rate its going, within a few years i wouldnt be suprised if the ncaa is dissolved..and I dont really see it being much of a loss if it does happen. And as you said, you can blame a lot of this on those school presidents, chancellor, etc. that contribute to the cause.Just my opinion..

Off topic, but wanted to share..I read something not long ago by a supposed top coach who remained anonymous. But he stated.." why should I recruit an unproven HS kid, pay him a million, when i can use the portal, buy a grown man with 2-3 years college experience, and possibly save a few dollars doing that?." And it makes sense really, no guarantee that HS kid will be with you next year anyway, so take the sure thing that you have now. May start seeing a big trend in the future with coaches turning to that ideology to build the majority of their rosters that way, and see a decrease in recruiting HS players. A few coaches have already employed that line of thinking in building their teams. Lane Kiffin is the portal king now, but Sarkisian is pushing him this year, Texas has bought some impressive players out of the portal so far..#1 portal class as of now.

Guys that are good have the leverage to renegotiate their deals every year. If they don't get what they feel they deserve they can go to the open market (TP). That is just the landscape of CFB in '26. For a RB every carry could be your last. They all know the story of Marcus Lattimore. Better to get every penny while you can.

My friend & I were talking about this exact thing last week. I think this is the future of college football recruiting, especially at positions where experience matters more and considering that coaches have no guarantee that a HS kid will stick around long enough to develop & get that experience. I think Kirby does a far better job than any other coach out there of keeping the HS kids he recruits around. Combine that with some 22-23 year old experienced big boys from the transfer portal, and we're golden!

You are definitely "on topic". The Indiana Hoosiers were built exactly that way as most of their starter on both sides of the ball are transfers. Mark Cuban just announced another "big" contribution to help them keep building. Texas Tech is building all of their sports -football, basketball, softball, volleyball - that way with money from Double Eagle Energy. Texas is spending big in current portal market. We just saw what Kiffin did at Ole Miss with Chambliss - a DII diamond that he found. We see how Deion builds teams at Colorado. They barely recruit high schools at all

As you think about it, D1 schools without "big boy" resources in SunBelt and American conferences, and the other divisions programs may ultimately just be "player development" for D1. It is easy to imagine that D1 will spend less time and money on high school recruiting, and that more and more high school players can expect to start at smaller schools and then transfer.

Sad that college athletics have come to this!

Maybe I'm way too pessimistic. But top 10 o-line? At the rate guys are going elsewhere, we'll be lucky to be top ten in the SEC. Gunner is going to be running for his life.

100%. Makes me wonder if our model wrong? Or at least tilted too far to one extreme.

Kirby's model is heavily based on HS recruiting. His staff are (IMHO) better recruiters than position coaches (which you can get away with if you stockpile talent - which you can't anymore).

If we don't have the checkbook for the athletes, we better get better position coaches because we're going to have to coach up a lot more 3 stars. And the 4 and 5 stars, if we can get them, better play immediately, in their minds, or their gone.

Nicely said and accurate. Kirby's strategy to rely on HS recruiting has passed its prime. HS recruits are the least loyal of all recruits. They will jump at the next shiny object, especially if they are riding the pine and their daddy is telling them that Coach Kiffin called him to say hello and see how things are going with his boy—oh, and that he noticed he's not getting any snaps. Or that coach Lea called to say hello and wouldn't it be nice to have their boy home every weekend and to be able to wave at him from the stands? Oh, and he could get an extra mil AND stay home?

We could be talking to a mature Raiola who's ready to get serious, now.

It's time to load up with adults who are no longer homesick or greedy and want to get ready for the next level. AND get some coaches who recruit and not recruiters who coach.
