Georgia powering through donor fatigue, raises $300 million-plus in NIL era
Georgia powering through donor fatigue, raises $300 million-plus in NIL era
ATHENS â Former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer once said âfootball is the engine that drives the revenue trainâ when it comes to the collegiate athletic funding model.

I believe Kirby is "doing things the right way", but that doesn't take away that ever-present 8 headed monster—NIL. How could college sports have gotten itself into such a bind with these players expecting all this money? This is patently insane. There are no guardrails and certainly no guidance from the NCAA. Some stipend money for these athletes is certainly the right thing to do, but NFL like payouts—-ridiculous!! Let's hope someone steps forward with a reasonable plan before this ruins college football—and guess what—your little Honey Hole will be gone-college athletes.
ncaa should’ve enacted common sense NIL 25 years ago but they did this to themselves.
Lucy, the NCAA is just a shell of what it used to be and had no choice but to introduce NIL in 2021. Imo, the universities are just as much to blame for dolling out these top heavy multi million contracts to head coaches. College presidents and AD's helped create this mess. No one got together, put their foot down and tried to stop the insanity. It' was just let's see who can outbid the other. Congratulations
It's already ruined Lucy. It will never be what it once was. Now, its just another money grab and NFL Saturday. This is what a lot of folks wanted. Pull out the plastic.
No mention of a college education. Call it what it is, minor league professional football, basketball, etc. The "Golden Goose" is not cooked, it's cremated. The last one to leave, please turn the lights off.
We need a couple, but only a couple if you get my drift, of Cali billionaires to see the light and get away from their high tax state and relocate to Ga.
Before you know it government legislation will try taxing on a state and federal level to pay for the NIL.
I don't expect Congress or the NCAA to pass any bill or rules that can survive a legal challenge. It's just not possible to put meaningful guardrails on NIL and college sports unless you admit these players are employees, can collectively bargain, and are accountable to their contracts. We're wasting time until that happens. Expect the $$$ to continue to rise every season for the budgets and players.
The bigger issue lurking under the surface is the donors. In a few years, we'll have donor fatique, and they will pull back on the cash. I mean, who would pay for Clemson to have a 5 Million dollar qb. If there is such a guy, he won't do it for long. Universities won't lose 20 Million a year for very many years before someone get's fired. Even the folks at Ohio State are smart enough to eventually figure that out. A market level will set even if Congress does nothing. Which they always do nothing.
Our President calling out college sports for out of control spending is laughably hypocritical.
I fully agree. It might not have postponed it forever but had the NCAA stepped up it would have prolonged it for Many years. But as is usually the case the NCAA is lazy or cowardly or Both.
Eventually sports agents and lawyers would have got into it and pushed the envelope. Not for the sake of the players but for they’re on pockets. But a decent stipend would have delayed this for years. Especially with an annual increase involved.
The stipend would’ve needed to be across the board which would eliminate or greatly reduce jealousy. But alas the genie is out of the bottle now. There will be lawsuits galore over NIL both for and against.
As the govt. tends to make things worse rather than better I’m not to confident in them getting involved. And for the record the NIL issue is not red, blue, or independent. It affects all aspects of not just CFB but potentially All collegiate sports, including us fans.
As far as UGA goes I believe Kirby does the best he can with what he has to work with. It is what it is. I doubt we will ever see CFB reverse its self to go back to how things were.
I have a request Please. Not a demand. But could we please leave govt. officials and politicians out of the conversation. As the NCAA is the foremost governing body of CFB I think it’s OK to speak positively or negatively or nothing at all regarding them. But as I’m sure Dawgs fans here have mixed and varied allegiances about politicians and govt. figures all bringing them into it will lead to is arguments and divisions among our fan base. Thank You.
they should’ve let them receive $ for being in video games, let them do autograph shows, and make $ from jersey sales. Anything to keep this pay for play collective system we have ruling the roost now.
This is the part of this whole process I dislike. In this country where most things can be done efficiently not being able to figure out how to pay the players via the TV money they generate is just crazy. This is not rocket science and to make it fair pay all players the same for their position regardless of the school and punish those that violate it. It will return the process to recruiting and the hard work of the coaches. I don't pay attention to recruiting now. It is hard to pay atttention to a process this crazy.
You’re very right, those are All good ideas !! But that would’ve required Effort and they are just to lazy and/or cowardly for that. Sad that they could’ve done those very things you said. Now the proverbial cat is out of the bag.
Let's be real. It's absurd how much money we're talking about here. The fact that we talk of it as if it's normal shows just how far our minds have been blinded by the insanity of it all. Foo bawl is now an idol.
