imageGeorgia football offensive line features a couple of surprises in starting lineup

ATHENS — Georgia knew entering spring practice it was going to have to replace two offensive line starters in Monroe Freeling and Micah Morris. Add in that center Drew Bobo was recovering from offseason foot surgery and Georgia was going to have a third new lineman working with the first team offense.

The new guys in the OLine looked pretty stout. For a freshman Helton showed his inexpereince a couple of times but all in all performed quite well, kid is going to be a first round NFL road grader in 3 - 4 years…speaking of surprises, do you want to know what is NOT a surprise? Mediocre Mike's basketball recruiting and portal signees…ZERO of the former and 2 of the latter ranking tied 15th in the SEC in recruiting and 14th in the SEC in portal player signees…oh boy, I can't wait for roundball season. On a positive note Mediocre Mike was able to lure away a bench warmer from the St Louis team that smoked him by 40 in the first round of the big dance this past year…

What about Jah Jackson? I thought he was having a breakouts spring based on chatter before G- Day.

Let's not pretend that the 2 freshmen "starters" on the '25 OL did not have growing pains throughout the year. I sure remember a lot of comments on Dawgnation about how bad the OL was ("fire Searels!") and how GS could not perform to his and our expectations because he wasn't getting time in the pocket.

I really like Helton. He is small by UGA IOL standards. IF he starts in '26 at OG that does not bode well for the OL performance in '26. I suspect he'll be a reserve most of the year on the OL and he'll waste a year that he could be helping the UGA DL.

Cortez Smith has a high ceiling at UGA at OC. Smith started at OC for 4 years at Parkview (GHSA 7A ball - SEC Jr). Not surprised he is a more polished OC than MToliver (converted OG).

@Gramster You are just a glutton for punishment aren't you? The more you talk the more you prove yourself wrong. You know what the #1 thing needed to recruit out of the portal or from HS is? Money. Any team in the country can buy whatever they want from HS or the TB just by writing a check. You know what Mike White does not get enough of as basketball coach of UGA? Money. The commitment is not there.

Some of UGA's best basketball players wanted more money after last season. They didn't get it from UGA so they went to the portal. Mike White didn't have it to give (or he didn't want that level of player back) so he had to let them walk.

I am sure that CMW thinks he is making his job easier next year by not signing better players. That is some great logic you got there.

Keep reading my posts and I'll bring you up to speed on NIL.

Conor Riley is mentally confused; not surprised, and keeps perpetuating the same untrue story. Helton did NOT START at right Guard. I was there and Juan Gaston was the starter at RG and Jah Jackson was the starting RT. Riley is confusing the second unit with the first. When Greene went out and the first unit was on the field they moved Gaston to LT and Jah stayed at RT.

Come on Connor, get your facts straight!

I agree that Helton seems too small for the guard position. Usually guards are north of 320

@UGADad20 Yes, because StLouis spent so much more on portal players last year…OH WAIT, they were ranked 87th vs UGa’s portal ranking of 33rd. When are you going to admit that UGa lost all those key players the last couple of cycles because, let me spell it for you real slow this time… t h e y d o n ‘ t w a n t to b e d e v e l o p e d b y a m e d i o c r e c o a c h…by the way, you still haven’t answered, why did Mediocre Mike, with one of the largest budgets, one of the largest financial support groups and some of the best basketball facilities in the nation…get run off for his performance at Florida? He had the best of everything, I don’t understand it…according to you all it takes to be a great coach is great facilities and monetary support. Do tell, dad

@Gramster "Yes, because StLouis spent so much more on portal players last year…OH WAIT, they were ranked 87th vs UGa’s portal ranking of 33rd." That's your point? St L won nothing except a game vs a UGA team where the player's admitted they had 1 foot out the door. St L was a basketball nobody just like UGA is a basketball nobody because neither compete financially on a national scale. How many times do you need to hear it?

How about this point? MI won the title starting 5 transfers after opening up the check book. To push your ridiculous narrative shows your bias and ignorance. UGA's TP ranking was 33rd? What was MI's? Yeah that's what I thought.

Player's don't care about development. They care about paycheck. Development? In basketball? You are showing your ignorance again. The 1st 9 (!) players forecasted to go in the next NBA draft are all freshmen. How much have they been "developed"? Stick to football, son.

Oh yes. Throwing up that elite coach Golden and program Florida again. Had your Golden-boy and his Golden program not ridden a Final 4 MVP to a lucky 2 pt win over UConn in '25 Golden would have as many championships at FU as CMW has at UGA. BTW Golden makes 50% more in salary a year than CMW. And UGA's TP ranking is 33rd? What is FU's? Yeah that's what I thought.

Dude stick to football. Pushing your "Mediocre Mike" agenda just highlights what is truly wrong with the UGA basketball program and makes your look biased and ignorant.

"Do tell" enough for you? SMH

That's your answer? That's your pathetic answer as to why Mediocre Mike accomplished nothing at Florida with the best of everything at his disposal? You can if it to death IF you wish but the fact is Todd Golden has a natty at Florida regardless of your perceived what ifs…and Mediocre Mike is getting blown out by St Louis because his players quit on him! Just like his players quit on him at Florida cost him his job there. Not enough talent and treasure can make up for uninspiring coaching, be it football or basketball or any other team sport but thank goodness you know better, so by all means carry on dad. You and your mouth full of wisdom teeth have it all figured out. Congrats.

Nice to see Kasey getting back to her full time job of anonymously hiding behind her down votes instead of engaging openly. Perhaps you will give it a go @Kasey …you give it a try, why did Mediocre Mike, with one of the largest budgets, one of the largest financial support groups and some of the best basketball facilities in the nation…get run off for his performance at Florida? Come on, tell me what I want to hear, you know you want to say it even though you don't want to admit it…because he is an uninspiring and creativity lacking c o…. finish it for me. Or just do what you do best, cheers

    Gram, I'm just curious.

Who would you replace Mike White and Josh Brooks with?

  • KaseyKasey Posts: 33,463 mod

i usually try not to feed trolls and @UGADad20 does a great job of refuting all your points anyway.

But if you’ll recall, I also am no Mike White fan. Saw no reason to give him that extension. Where was he gonna go? Who was gonna hire him? But it doesn’t matter if he’s the coach or not. Unless the school starts putting $ into the program to bring in good players the coaching is (mostly) irrelevant.

Hope that tickles your fancy ma’am and enjoy your time here at DN while you still have some.

Much better, nice to see you engage. Not sure what points dad refuted because there was only one. Mediocre Mike had all the resources one could hope for at FU and yet? As for the development part, 1 or 2 elite ready for the NBA freshmen players per team most definitely do not need developing, just fine tuning, but last I checked there are at least12 players on every team. Wilkins-Ross-McVey-Cyril-Wilkinson-James, I'm sure a few of those would have stuck around if they felt like they were being developed into NBA caliber players and they had a coach motivating them, or did they all leave for more money and prettier arenas?

My point has always been why pay a coach 4Million a year if you have no ambitions to provide the finances and resources to compete at the top level. I would replace Mediocre Mike with a successful Div 2 or 3 coach who would jump at the chance to make a mil or two a year, take that 2 mil savings and use it in programs that are competitive (golf-softball-equestrian-swimming-tennis-track, etc), where that little extra cash push could be the difference in a few natties, who knows.

My ignorance also shows that the final 4 teams of UConn (36th) Illinois (38th) and Arizona (138th) had lower ranked portal additions, but yes, that is what you thought…carry on dad
