“But if Taylor can take a big step forward this season, many of the questions around Georgia’s passing offense.”
Please proofread. I mean good grief. 😑
Excellent article and analysis Connor. You definitely hit on the key issues for the offense going into the '26 season.
" But there were also areas where the Bulldogs didn’t hit their statistical benchmarks. Georgia had just 20 sacks, last in the SEC. The Bulldogs also ranked 55th nationally in plays of 20 yards or more. Among College Football Playoff teams, only Ohio State and Oklahoma had fewer. It is interesting that neither Georgia, Ohio State or Oklahoma won a game in the College Football Playoff last season."
That's probably not a coincidence. Branch was used almost exclusively on short WR screens and similar passes. Most of his yards were after the catch. Imagine if he had caught the medium or long ball instead and then broke tackles and hit the gas? A much better result obviously…
The pass rush improvement is an obvious need - especially without having to bring the house. We should do better this year in that regard.
Kirby only took one player in the pass rush department and he got hurt during spring. Why he didn’t take more players in that area is beyond me.
zayden Walker will probably be that Jalon walker type LB again this year. Isaiah Gibson will probably do that some. Not to mention Ikinnagbon and Chase Linton from 2025. Probably why we only took one.
Until something works or not I will not second guess Kirby. That said, I sure hope it gets it right and if the plan isn't working, I hope he can change plans before the wheels come off the cart. GO DAWGS AND GO KIRBY!!!!!!
To name names on who needs to get which stats, why not look at the big picture. First off, the defense will get much better pressure from the inside in 2026, thus making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks outside of just an improved pass rush. Kirby's defensive philosophy has always relied on heavy inside pressure from his D lines. Even at Alabama that was true. When he does not get that intense inside pressure the rest of the defense suffers to a degree. This season will be back to suffocating defense from the Dawgs. Great field position for the offense will be a plus also.
It is mind-boggling that we missed on so many stat lines and still won the SEC. All those super close games could have gone the other way. Let's hope we just take care of business this year. Kirby has to be really frustrated on the playoff losses. He should be really hungry/angry to improve and the team will feed off of that.
