Yes, the bats as a whole need to wake up and return from vacation!
Yeah, kind of weird. Very few hits, all but one were bombs by the "usual suspects". But even they had been sort of silent over the last couple of weeks. Maybe they will get the rest of the gang going. Once again, good starting pitching. That helps. Iglesias, for all his success, still scares me. He seems to always give up a hit or two or a walk before he shuts the door.
Well, the bats seem to have awakened a bit. 5 HRs and 16 hits last night. Even Austin Riley got a dinger. Hopefully, that might get him going a bit. Or not.
Sale didn't have his best stuff, meaning he gave up 3 runs and "only" got 3 Ks but he did get the win.
The "bench" got some play last night - Dubon, Yaz and White all had HRs. All in all an enjoyable 4th for the lads.
Phillies are only 3 games behind and charging fast under Mattingly as manager. Hold on to your seats.
Don't know who made this schedule but the Braves have and early (12:30) game today after a night game and then have to leave after tomorrow night's game for one in Pittsburg the next day. Can't be too helpful.
Dubon has as many homers (9) as Riley. Let that sink in…that's a great total so far for Dubon… about half of what I'd expect now for Riley. He hit it the opposite way too…usually a good sign when Riley is "getting on a hot streak"!
No joke when I saw Soto come up with 2 outs in the 9th I turned the game off. I knew he was going to hit a homer.
Checked the score on my phone a few minutes later and yup it was 5-3.
With Raul's recent struggles you could see it coming from 2 miles away. Plus I think Soto has owned him.
Yes, he has "owned" Iglesias. The announcer said he as 3 for 4 lifetime against him. Iglesias has recently taken to giving up walks and hits in his innings - not many "clean" innings. This time it came back to bite him and the Braves. Still, they battled back. Unfortunately, only rookie Owen Murphy in the pen. He gave up the lead and took the loss in his MLB debut. Still, the Braves battled back in the bottom of the 10th loading the bases but couldn't close the deal. Lots to like in this loss, but it was a loss.
On to the steel city tonight.
This team NEEDS a shot in the arm for rejuvenating them - a major deadline move! If only AA would finally do IT!
Frustrating to say the least.
Maybe the Braves have hit bottom. Would be nice if the Phillies would lose tonight we could get that lead back to 4.
Actually maybe not. The Marlins are hot. They could pass the Phils for 2nd today.
Nice win tonight. Good offense and some good pitching, other than a blip here and there.''
Not sure where this Jarvis kid came from but he played lights out tonight. Hit his first MLB homer and made a couple of incredible plays in the field. A Cuban kid named Victor Mederos came in to close and did a good job. Mostly because his last name is the same as some guy called donniem.
It is spelled without an i like my name but close enough for me to call him a distant cousin. Hope he sticks around.
If we can stay hot for the next week and a few days, we might even build our lead. Fingers crossed.
This game was full of unusual accomplishments — some good, some bad.
The bad: Riley 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts. Elder gave up back-to-back homeruns and three in four innings of work. Braves batters had 10 strikeouts.
The good: We had 11 hits and 8 bb's for a total of 19 base runners. The grandslam homerun in the ninth by Yastrzemski with 2 outs. None of of our homeruns were slouchs : 397, 403, and 404 ft.
The bad: Riley 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts
Does something need to be done with Riley. He looks like a little leaguer up there, flailing away at sliders well outside the strike zone. Maybe they just wait this historic slump out and pray he gets back to "normal", like Harris did last year after the All-Star break.
They've got guys to plug in there. Jarvis/Mateo could play short and Mateo/Jarvis take over at third or plug Dubon in there for a spell and let stick with both Dubon and Yaz flanking Harris in center. Riley seems like an almost automatic out - and with all of those K's, an unproductive out.
If we still had an 8-9 game lead I could handle patience, but I hear footsteps….
Old days he would've been back in the minors long ago. Cant really do that these days. But I think it would help him. So much of hitting is confidence and getting out of your head at the plate.
Right now he is Crash Davis thinking about whatever his version of Annie is.
After his last K of the game, cameras caught him blowing a bubble with his gum. Odd. I read into it, (a bit too much perhaps) that he was showing he wasn't worried about it. Dad gum, I'm worried about it.
"The Kid," Ken Griffey Jr, used to blow bubbles while he was swinging, robbing home runs, etc. Really don't know what Riley is going through, maybe he needs glasses? His defense is certainly NOT in a slump. Hopefully, Ronald being in the lineup after the break will stabilize the situation. At least, we didn't lose any ground last night! Go Braves!
Philies have predictably cooled. 5-5 in their last 10 same as us.
If the Braves can get this turned around in the second half you could stretch it back out again. Dont sleep on the Marlins either. They seem to be playing really well this late in the season.
