Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

Added it to my list. Currently reading about Lincoln during his time as president. Very helpful during these strange times we find ourselves in.
Some of my favorite "Brain Break" books are by the creative nonfiction writer John McPhee, ( a bit like Wolfe and Thompson minus the stream of consciousness) Was first introduced to him in 1975 via his work, Pieces of the frame, which has an interesting write up on Georgia.
Interesting. Thanks for the mention.
Y'all ever read the Terrible Hours by Peter Maas? It reads like tightly woven fiction but recounts the true story of Swede Momsen. He developed the technology to rescue crews off submarines. His gear helped recover about half the crew off the USS Squalus, the first time men had been saved off the bottom of the ocean. It's a great read and ignited my son's fascination with navy history.
Have not read but reminds me of another great non-fiction book I love called "Shadow Divers."
I am trying audiobooks. I have always had a special interest in history. Right now I am reading (well, listening to) "How Fascism Works" by Jason Stanley. Very interesting read, especially for current times.
If you'd like to pursue the subject I'd recommend two separate works by Stanley Payne and Jonah Goldberg.
Goldberg's one of my favorite political pundits. Not just for his perspective but also for his humor. Very funny guy.
due to the book's reputation I am completing a chapter and then reviewing a quick overview of that chapter ha so hopefully I should be able to finish with some understanding of what I read
good luck with infinite jest, I don't imagine I will ever make it around to that one haha
Back in my college days I elected to take a course devoted entirely to Ulysses. Had I not had a kind and understanding Professor I would have certainly flunked the class. After that I knew better to even think about attempting Finnegans Wake.
I wanted to do one of those two and I went with Ulysses partially to say I did and partially for the personal challenge and partially because so many love it/the accolades it receives.
I don't imagine I will ever tackle Finnegans Wake either
If you like history, check out Guests of the Ayatollah by Mark Bowden. It’s the story of the Iranian hostage crisis. Excellent book.
It’s on my list
and @tfk_fanboy i may tackle infinite jest on a road trip back to nyc. I tried years ago and couldn’t do it. I found some sites with some tips and am hoping that’ll help me push thru. I love his nonfiction stuff and have been crying laughing during it. People have said the same about infinite jest so I’m gonna give it one more shot (one day)
I'm reading two books now:
'The Diversity Delusion' by Heather MacDonald
'The Hundred-Year Marathon' by Michael Pillsbury
I have been very much slacking on my reading lately, but I'm in the middle of the first book of the Powder Mage series, Promise of Blood written by Brian McClellan. It's pretty good. The last book I read was so good, it left me reluctant to start anything else for the inevitable let down. So I've REALLY taken my time with this one. My only knock is it's got so many character's with odd names that I find it hard to keep up with who is who. My slow pace could also have a part in that. Solid B though so far.
A tip of the hat to all who are reading or listening to books.
I spend so much time on DawgNation I don't even have time to read my emails much less a book.
