Fully intend on visiting more US sites. Our “strategy” is to do more international flights now (without young kids) and visit more of the US after we have kids and can teach them how great this country is. ‘Merica!

When they’re a bit older, we’ll take them abroad because I think an international perspective is beneficial to becoming more well rounded.

No doubt, my Parents took us to all the cool places. Mount Vernon, Gettysburg, and on and on. Looking back I really appreciate it. I love American history. Disney World and Epcot was everything when I was a kid.

The wife and I have been to Scotland (great food & scenery), Italy (stayed in Rome. Amazing sites all within walking distance), and Mebourne ( great foods & great people). Cant go wrong with any of these. Looking at a trip to St Petersburg next summer.

I visited quite a few different countries while I was in the military. Turkey and Norway were favorites of mine as well, Turkey mainly for the people were very welcoming. Norway for the same and the beauty everywhere. Athens (Greece) was very beautiful however it seemed every other person was trying to rip you off. Thailand, I had a very good time in as well, however I was visiting friends so I was able to avoid most of the things you want to avoid while vacationing easily.

I was going to go to Budapest in March, but had to switch plans and will be heading to London to see a Six Nations Tour Rugby match at Twickenham (England vs Wales). Having lived abroad and traveled extensively, I will travel to just about anywhere on the planet. My favorite city in the world is Paris, followed closely by Rome. The most vibrant city I've ever been to is Tokyo, great food too. Greece is to die for and I plan on returning later this year - Santorini. Bavaria is spectacular, along with Lucerne Switzerland and Austria.

    What time of year?

If you’re looking at a week, Australia and Thailand are too far for that short a turnaround (24 hours-plus each way); but if you can stretch to a few weeks, those are two of my favorite spots on the planet.

if it’s a week in the Summer, TAP has decent flights to Europe (including parts of Portugal) and allow a stop for up to 3 days in Lisbon which is a really great city. Nearby Sintra (UNESCO site) is awesome and on a clear day you can see to the Spanish border eastward and out to the horizon over the Atlantic westward - great strategic vantage point back in the day), as are Estoril (good casino if interested) and Cascais are cool seaside towns to the North of Lisbon.

Then head to Algarve (south coast)...spectacular cliffs/beaches and bars open all night in the Summer. Some good golf there, too. Depending where you stay in Algarve, you can take a 2-3 hour drive to Seville which is really beautiful (actually proposed to my wife there).

A Spain trip is also a great take as notes here, as well. Toledo (dormer capital of Spain just south of Madrid), Granada (stay in the Alhambra Palace) and Barcelona are all great options on a Spain itinerary. Costa del Sol is Spain’s version of Portugal’s Algarve but more expensive (a Portugal is among the most affordable EU countries).

    Good luck with your decision!

PS - found this clip that shows some of the Algarve beaches. Beaches in the first half are more eastward in the Spain side; beaches and caves in 2nd half are westward towards the southwestern most tip of the continent

I will check out the Hemingway bar you mentioned, I am huge Hemingway fan

We have a list of places we are interested and plan to spend each day in an area exploring
