Dang, this thread makes me feel pretty much worthless. I did use to train some pretty good Bird dogs, then all the quail left.
I was an All-State trumpet player in Texas in HS and played in my college orchestra. I was pretty darn good. Gave it up to join a **** fraternity. Wish I had stuck with it. Trying to teach myself guitar right now.
The loss of farms in the South is mostly to blame for the reduction in Quail. One of my favorite sports growing up. Training the dogs is an art you should be proud of! Not even close to worthless!
We share a common past. I too played trumpet in high school. I sat 1st chair, 1st trumpet as a sophomore at Forest Park HS Beaumont, Texas. I gave it up when my family moved to Poughkeepsie NY. The band Stunk but the soccer team was great. Girls and soccer replaced the trumpet. Don't regret the girls, but like you, I regret giving up the horn. Now, I fly fish. I'm one of only 187 Master Certified fly casting instructors in the world.
Training bird dogs is an art form. My best friend, now deceased, trained bird dogs. He ran his dogs in field trials all around the south. I always sat amazed at what a man can train a dog to do. Dogs and their trainers are much smarter than we give them credit for.😉
I’m a pretty decent golfer and avid competitive shooter. I have a hard time balancing the two, playing more golf here lately.

At About 30 I worked in Washington DC. Went for a normal workout but had a chance encounter with a two time golden glove“champion of DC. Was hitting the heavy bag and he said ‘those are arm punches.’ ShowEd me how to throw punches getting your whole body into it like a good golf swing or baseball.
He said because of wrestling judo football and rugby I did not have to learn to stand and go toe to toe. I had to learn the box, the art of boxing. He worked with me almost every day for a few hours a day for two years. Always finding people for me to spar. Now I thought of myself as an old man at 30. Got to spar a pro fighter who was sugar Ray Leonard’s sparring partner. I was supposed to do a exhibition against the eventual IBF champion But that fell through. So I sparred a lot but was 0 for 0 as an amateur or pro.
Then we move to Oregon and a promoter saw me hitting heavy bag and ask when I was going to turn pro. He had no idea that I was now 40 we had little kids and I would have had to travel a couple hundred miles and be gone all weekend to earn 250 bucks so I declined.

I too share your wood working hobby ...in my shop I have built coffee tables , side tables , dinning tables and shelves ... some of the tables out of sunken cypress that I pulled out of the river and lake I live on .....also metal work , welding have made grills and cookers , fire pits .... always have a big garden and battle the deer over it , ... used to train and hunt my own bird dogs ( was lucky and had great natural retrievers and instinct rich dogs...just take them hunting ) ...used to shoot lots of Shotgun ....trap skeet and sporting clays ..golf ... used to really good at drinking beer and singing country music ..... restoring old tractors .....
want to start playing pickle ball ..... but not “ good at anything “
Well maybe I am good at something .... I have mastered the art of Bull 💩.....it’s a southern tradition !

@texdawg That's really cool about the furniture. My fiance and I this last week have been thinking about getting into the furniture flipping as a side gig, potentially full time if it takes off.
My great grandfather had a furniture refinishing shop for 60 years in Florence, SC. My dad used to build furniture as a hobby too. And I worked at a furniture store all throughout high school. So it's in the blood.
As for hobbies, I play guitar and sing. I went and tried out for American Idol one year back in 2006. Drove to Birmingham, AL and waited in line for a whole day, then didn't do my best during my 12 seconds of opportunity, but it was a memory. I used to play gigs in here in Savannah just me and my guitar.
I'm also an artist and love to build things. Don't really do much drawing or painting these days, because I'm a designer by trade. But here's a Gold Addy award winning poster series I designed:

I flip bows...
I like to buy used compound bows, fix 'em up, tune them and shoot them about 200 times, and then resell them. Not necessarily to make a lot of $$$, but just as a hobby.
Shooting a bow is my driving range... peaceful, quiet, relaxing...
Not the most exciting hobby, but I enjoy it.
