Opinion: Stockton-Vandagriff is not same QB situation as Jake Fromm and Justin Fields

While I really hope it doesn't turn out the same way, this situation is almost EXACTLY like Eason-Fromm-Fields. If, God forbid, Daniels gets hurt this coming season, and Vandagriff steps in and plays the rest of the season (and presumably well), with Stockton set to come in the following January -- how is that any different ?

With 2 QBs having outstanding arms, wheels, size and for at least one, experience as a receiver, I would hope UGA could incorporate both Brock and Gunner into the same backfield at times. This could create quite the dilemma for any defense.

Both Fields and Fromm have 1 Natty appearance with a loss. The difference is Fromm's Natty game was closer vs. Bama. So all this talk about Fields being so much better is for naught, as he hasn't accomplished anything more than Fromm. I get the optics of his flashy talent, good speed and great arm, but he hasn't shown he can win at the highest level any better than Fromm has.

Per Sporting News article that came out recently. Fields' lawyer, Tom Mars, backed up Fields' claim in a statement issued to ESPN.

"Irrefutable documentation that has nothing to do with racism was presented to the NCAA in support of OSU’s request that Justin Fields be given a waiver," Mars told ESPN. "That information wasn’t critical of — and didn’t reflect poorly on — the UGA culture, the UGA administration or staff, any particular student, or the student body. And it certainly didn’t reflect poorly on Justin or any member of his family. However, that documentation did provide support for the issuance of a waiver under the NCAA’s rules."

In the article both Justin and Ohio St. coach Day say that Justin wasn't guaranteed a starting job. That certainly puts to bed the hypothesis that it was just "handed to him ".

Another hypothesis, politely speaking, presented as fact is that in Justin's Fr year at UGA that coach Smart "gave him the keys to the offense" and that whenever he came in he bogged the team down that had been ("clicking). Lot's of revisionist history here too. The fact is that Justin made it into 12 games that season. In those 12 games he attempted 39 passes. Let's see that would be 3.5 pass attempts per game on avg. My guess is those 39 attempts were not evenly dispersed. - OK so I just checked and 24 of his 39 attempts came in just 3 games, just as I expected. He had 5 games in which he made either 0 or 1 attempt to pass. That leaves 4 games in which he averaged 2.5 attempts to pass. I wouldn't call that being given the keys to anything in 9 of the 12 games he got into where he got to wing it around once or twice. LOL! That sounds more like a short leash, than given the keys and saying be back before midnite.

He did avg as a FR (while given limited opportunities)a higher QB rating than Jake did that year. He passed for 4 TD's and 0 interceptions and avg. 6 yards per rushing attempt totaling 266 yards. Those numbers are far from suggesting he bogged the team down when he did get an opportunity. Imagine being Justin and against the better teams you get 1 series, 2 tops to produce. "OK kid go wow them with your 1 series. LOL! Oh and while you're in there, you get 2 pass attempts., if you're lucky.

It's OK to love Jake and to not prefer Justin, I preferred Jake during the moment too. But the vitriol for Fields and the revisionist history is way over the top.

Off topic, but: That picture of Xavian Sorey Jr. in the right column in the Kroger 2021 Recruits window!! I think a paternity test is in order!

Let’s not forget Carson Beck. I’m as excited as everyone else about the shinny new recruits, but am also thankful for the guys who have been here learning the system and putting in work!!

Fields's two years at OSU shows he should not have sit behind Jake for two years. He did the ABSOLUTE right thing by transferring and I don't regret that Fromm was QB1 for three years. I regret he wasn't QB1 for 4 years. They both had great college careers and come April, they'll both be in the NFL. Based on their stated childhood dreams of being NFL QB's, it's a win-win for both.

I agree with the topic of the article , it's not the same situation but I do believe what Kirby decides to do with his stable of QB's moving forward in the 2022 season will come to define his tenure at UGA. In that regard it will be much bigger than the Fields-Fromm deal.

Kirby's choosing between Beck-Vandergriff-Stockton (barring injuries or transfers ) could come to define his coaching legacy. Choose the wrong guy and one of the other 3 goes somewhere else and has greater success than the guy you decided to go with wont be a good look for him. Imagine Kirby goes with Brock and Gunner goes to Oklahoma and wins the Natty there? OMG He'll never live that down.

Kirby has to get this one right. Remember though , he chose Dwan over Stetson for Arkansas.

That's kind of a fair point, except that you have to introduce a stipulation to make it. Yes, starting quarterbacks do lose their job to injury, but it doesn't happen very often - see, well, Fromm never missing a game in 3 years. If going into the 2022 season, Vandagriff is a firmly established starter that led his team to the national title game, then the situation will be similar to the Fromm-Fields one. But we're quite a ways from seeing that play out, so it's hard to say right now that there's no difference in the scenarios. And even if that situation were to occur, I still don't think it would be quite the same. Vandagriff and Stockton are similarly rated as recruits, whereas Fields came in with the cache of the #1/#2 overall player below a former 4-star on the depth chart. So in the case of Vandagriff-Stockton, I don't think there would be the clamor for the backup to be handed the job like we saw with Fromm-Fields.

Realize this - elite QBs are coming - each and every year! Go Dawgs!

There is one additional point that I haven’t seen mentioned. Brock and Gunner both have fathers who are longtime successful coaches. These parents value and understand the concept of fair competition and waiting your turn in line. I sincerely believe we will see some great parenting take place when one of these 2 players gets frustrated, unlike the parenting several former QBs experienced. It also helps that both players grew up within a few miles of Athens. This was not the case for Eason (Washington), Mathis (Michigan) and to some extent Fields (Atlanta area). I agree we are not comparing apples with the Eason, Fromm and Fields fiascos because Gunner and Brock can handle the competition. Go Dawgs!!!

I think the comment about "parenting" is spot on. The qb who left us had a father that saw being drafted after 3 years as the ultimate goal for playing college football. I believe that Vandergriff and Stockton have parents that value the education that their sons will receive as much as moving on to the pros and that will make a huge difference in the decision making of both in terms of staying and competing.

What refrences show proof of your claims JT was healthy earlier than stated? I'd like to see them..

I like the comment made from "kirkhilles" about Kirby picking the safe choice of who knows the playbook best. We do seem to play the QB (see Stetson/Fromm) that makes few mistakes, but when you need that super masterful throw for an important third down or score, he does not have the athletic ability to pull it off. That said, I am stunned beyond belief at our QB room. Make it count while you have it!
