Are there even bios on every president? Some seem pretty "meh".
yes. The one on James Garfield was one of the best books I’ve ever read
Did you read the Lincoln biography by Doris Kearns Goodwin?
I've got Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs but haven't started reading it yet.
I think Ron Chernow's biography of him got good reviews.
the one I read on Lincoln was Lincoln’s virtues if I recall correctly.
Washington had vision for America and was on a mission, and nothing or no one could deter him from it. Washington was my favorite in school I loved to read about his exploits. in my book George Washington qualifies as a DGD. 😎
Rowing across the Delaware River to attack the enemy, in a blizzard, in the middle of the night, on Christmas Day, is pure gangster. Ruthless to the core.
Lincoln, frustrated with his field General's lack of progress in the Chesapeake, personally went to the encampment and noticed that Norfolk just across the water appeared to be lightly protected. He asked why the Union Army hadn't taken Norfolk yet. His officers said they couldn't find a good landing spot. Frustrated with their cautiousness, he took command of the Union forces and personally lead a reconnaissance mission into enemy territory in Norfolk, found a good landing spot, and within a day the Union had captured Norfolk.
It is the only example in American history of a sitting American President taking command of troops in combat.
American history is so much cooler than the boring stuff they teach in HS.
Many of the accounts of Washington include how his officers adored and honored him. Many of them expressed that their biggest fear during the war was that they might let him down..
GW could have easily declared himself Emperor of the Americas and people would have been fine with it. He could have been a King but he knew better. He had a vision. America was truly unique. People tend to miss that point that there wasn't a democratic republic anywhere on the planet.
