I felt the referees were not calling the game evenly at all. Haynes King clearly did not make his throw to the line of scrimmage and no receiver was in site, therefore that should have been intentional grounding and a safety. Several GT defenders had hands all over GA Wrs but no PI called.
They will take note, and they will be falling right into Bobo's chess trap that he has been setting up ever since the second half of the Charlette game. Last 2 gameplans have been very vanilla on pupose, which is to be expected. Wouldn't be surprised to see the Offensive scheme from the Texas game show up for the SEC champ game
LAstly, This game was a classic example of a rivalry. Which means, you can throw all the yearly stats out the window. These games never play out the way we draw them up.
What was up with Daylen? He was giving huge cushions and just seemed very passive in his coverage. I thought he was supposed to be CB#1. He used to play much tighter coverage on people.
Actually under 50 yards in the 2nd half. DAWGS had 145 yards rushing at halftime, and still didn't reach 200 yards rushing in the 2nd half. Ended up with 190 rushing yards for the game.
1. Mike Bobo called a bad game. 2. Gunner Stockton played a bad game. Those should be viewed independently. Bobo's gameplan did give Stockton quite a few chances to make plays that Stockton failed to execute. And Bobo wasn't creative enough in the second half when the running game stopped working. But neither is the main issue.
The main issue is that Georgia Tech made the unfortunate decision to hire Brent Key. Because of this, Tech centers its entire season on beating UGA. Evidence? Georgia Tech had a clear path to the playoff because of a pretty good team and an easy schedule. And they blew it. Make no mistake: Tech didn't give up 34, 36 and 48 points in the 3 games prior to playing UGA because their defense is terrible. This same Tech defense held Clemson and Duke to 21 and 18 points and Wake Forest to 23 in regulation. Indeed, that stretch of 3 games, including 34 to 1-10 Boston College, were the only games they gave up more than 23 in regulation all season. No, they played that horribly on defense because they spent the entire month of November preparing to defend Stockton and Bobo. Had they actually spent November preparing for the teams that they were playing, Tech would be 11-1 right now with their playoff ticket stamped even if they lost the ACC title game. At the very worst, they would be 10-2 and on their way to the ACC title game to play 10-2 Virginia and 9-3 SMU teams near the bottom of the playoff rankings. Instead, this is a program that clearly prioritizes trying to beat UGA over winning the ACC title and making the playoffs. And here's the amazing thing: even had Georgia Tech beaten UGA, so what? They still would not have gone to the ACC championship game or had a realistic shot at the playoffs. They would have still been a 10-2 team with 1 win over a ranked opponent and 2 bad losses.
Buster Faulkner planned/called the game he was supposed to for GaTech to have a chance to win. It was coherent based on the strengths and weaknesses of that offense and what they were facing in an excellent GA defense. He didn't overthink it (running McCray to the outside? No use of any other RB). He didn't get too cute (run the **** ball down their throats all game long after seeing how Pitt and NC State gashed GaTech). He didn't use his TEs - again. And very few attempts to get #1 free down the field - bubble screens don't count.
Our D shut down their O. Our O shut down our O. So who's that on?
Our O shut down our O. GaTech defense just happened to be on the field at the time.
Losing Drew Bobo is what happened to our running game in the second half. Center calls the line assignments. Very cerebral position with heavy emphasis on communication - to go on top of all the banging. Drew is outstanding. Even the guys calls the game noted it (and that last year we had NFL-bound Jared Wilson at center and ran the ball poorly). People are starting to understand just how good Drew is. Tolliver will need to grow up in the SECCG. HOWEVER, Maybe the OC and staff can simplify things for the kid? Need Drew back and 100% (foot and hand) for the CFP.
My good friend(who happens to be a Techie) summed Tech up pretty well, in that they play well against the better teams and play down to their competition. That sounds mental to me.
@BigFan
Let me see if I understand you correctly, Buster Faulkner planned/called the game he was supposed to for GaTech to have a chance to win but still lost, yet Bobo didn’t and UGa still won. Interesting perspective…seems all I saw from Buster was Haynes King run right, Haynes King run left, Haynes King pass, GT punt. Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of BF, but he showed me nothing creative yesterday either. Both OCs were forgettable although one of them was a little more forgettable…the one who only managed 9 points with one of the top offenses in the country. Rivalry games do that…
Drew Bobo’s injury in the first half had a lot to do with the slow down of our running game in the second half….
@Gramster The Buster Faulkner fans among the UGA fandom are just people who want Bobo gone. They don't actually follow Faulkner or Tech. If they did, they'd know that Faulkner has dialed up plenty of stinkers. While the Bobo bashers would trade him for Faulkner in a second, they are the only ones who regard him anywhere near as highly.
Absolutely no one has tried to hire Faulkner, not as head coach at another school, an offensive coordinator for a higher profile program or as an NFL position coach. Just last year: 19 points in the loss to Louisville, 13 to Notre Dame, 9 against a losing Virginia Tech team and the offense not even showing up in the bowl game against 7-6 Vanderbilt until the fourth quarter. This year has been somewhat better for his offense but mainly because of the schedule: 3-8 Colorado, Gardner-Webb, 7-5 Clemson (and they only scored 24 in that game), Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, 6-5 Duke, 3-8 Syracuse, 6-5 NC State, 1-11 Boston College, 8-4 Pitt (whose 42-28 drubbing of Georgia Tech was sandwiched between their getting massacred 37-15 and 38-7 by Notre Dame and Miami, and yes both were home games).
