Kirby wasn't sligbted at all. Clark Lea is 10-2 at VANDERBILT. That's a task that can't be ignored. On the other hand, he had Pavia. I think I watched every one of their games just to watch Diego. Lea is a 1st class coach. He'll rise
Yeh yeh...Vandy is definitely one of the many.
Maybe, it's not-so-much..."them" being Against, anybody....but, being For a Favored One.
And, we all know who the "Favored" schools are. Lol....same as it's ever been.
Coach Lea...definitely has my respect. He reminds of one of my old coaches. Not emotional...but, intellectually passionate. If that makes sense.
What Lea has done with the culture of Vanderbilt....measures up to the likes of Saban and Smart.
However....Kirby Smart has been doing that, for a Decade....WITH Championships....and, has yet to win that so-called COY Award on the National stage.
Go back and look at the Coaches that DID win the COY Award....instead of Smart.
Ask 2 questions.....
Where are they now....including Smart?
In retrospect....how good were they, actually....when compared to Smart?
Good deeper dive MG. It is difficult for ZB1 to catch the ball downfield when CKS rarely allows GS to throw the ball more than 5 yards past the line of scrimmage.
I would love to see the stats (% of GS throws within 5 yards of the LOS vs throws longer than 5 yards from the LOS).
well there was the one ply that Branch ran the wrong route or Gunner threw it to the wrong spot under pressure. With the way the defense is playing they may not feel as though they need to push the ball down the field.
At this juncture, I'm not P-owed that Kirby wasn't named COY, or that Branch, or ER IV weren't 1st Team SEC or the "committee" didn't see how The Dawgs earned a #2 placement……Kirby is now well ensconced at the pinnacle of the SEC Mt Olympus and the SEC COY is for the also rans, The 2025 iteration of The Georgia Bulldawgs has worked and earned ALL STAR, DGD Status in my book and our #3 placement was made by wokeazz SEC Haters & B1G cheaters….let the games begin and we'll see who wins the Natty!
More of a ball control team - and I am good with it, just win.
If you look at time of possession between Bama & Georgia the two games this year…Georgia basically flipped it on Bama from the first game by a large margin, that is what won the game - the time of possession or game planning.
No issue at all with the situational play calling, all plays work if they are executed. We have some smart people making decisions. As far as Gunner is concerned, he has plenty of arm and the coaches know it. We've just identified this teams strengths and are playing them that way…or calling games that way. That is what a good coaching staff does.
To me, this is the best coaching job that Kirby and crew has ever done, especially when you consider that 50 plus percent of the players are either freshman or sophomores - and also the injury issues on the OL to start the year.
Nonetheless, don't believe there are any stats out there that show the "within 5 yards " question…you would have to go game by game. But below are some stats on "situational passing" to date...15 + and 25+ & long, you can do the math (% question) and interpret - “I’m lazy”.
We have a winning combo, enjoy the ride:
Personally....I don't care what the stats say. I see a dominating brand of football, being played be some very well trained and super-athletic young men. Currently Executing at the highest level...imo.
Particularly on the defensive side of the ball. And, THAT'S the side you're gonna NEED....to win a Natty. Especially, with the physicality UGA likes to play, with. They can "break" any team....before halftime. Including, OSU...imo.
No team or player is mistake free. Nobody grades out at a 100% in film breakdown. If you do....you didn't do much, in that game. Just sayin.
You can nitpick this player and that over an obvious mistake....but, there are probably 3 or 4 mistakes on that play, that somebody else committed....and, you don't know about it. Cause you didn't know it was supposed to be executed a certain way.
These guys are correcting each other's mistakes on the fly,, now. They've grown far beyond where I thought they'd be at this time. I didn't expect to see the Defensive Blitzkrieg...otherwise know as the Grits Blitz....until the Semi-Finals.
If they look great...and they play great....and they WIN.....well, they must be great. Let's give it to em.
Go get em Big Red.
I think you missed the point. I am not questioning the strategy. Obviously CKS wants GS to be a mistake free game manager until either a) he trusts him more and/or b) he wants to spring something else on an unsuspecting unprepared D. Just like he's done w/all his QB's.
My point was in support of MG defending ZB1's lack of receiving yards vs SEC receiving yardage leaders. Another person said he was 13th in the SEC in receiving yards and 53 in yards/catch. Hard to rack up yards when the offense is not throwing the ball downfield 90% of the time.
Say what you want about ball control and the offense. There are 5X (10X?) as many throws w/in 5 yards of the LOS as there are throws 20-30 or more yards past the line.of scrimmage. Just a fact that effects wr's stats. It also inflates QB's completion %.
ZB1 consistancy catching the ball makes him the O MVP in my book.
branch is absolutely the offensive MVP and if anyone thinks different they’re crazy. All the success is predicated off of the attention he attracts. Gunner is doing his job of delivering the ball and running the system…but he wouldn’t be nearly as successful without Branch.
I agree w/what you say. Branch has made some clutch and difficult catches that we haven't seen consistently made in a few years. Those catches kept drives alive in some very tight games this year.
At the beginning of the year I thought the UGA coaches would limit his touches in the O to save him for the return game. Thinking UGA was deeper at WR than at PR/KOR. The UGA coaches have done the opposite. They limited his returns ( no kickoffs(?) mostly fair catches on PR's) so that he would be available all season as a WR. He is a better WR than I thought he was.
Didn't miss your point, but there are plenty here that do not understand the why's for "Bobo's playcalling/offense" - which is mostly Kirby's. So, I thought I would post the "why's" while attempting to answer your question w/ a provided link:
"I would love to see the stats (% of GS throws within 5 yards of the LOS vs throws longer than 5 yards from the LOS)."
Again, pretty sure there are no stats out there to answer it accurately, unless you go game by game …but that was the best that I could find to give you an idea. In the link, roughly 38% of the passing attempts go for first downs, or 54% of the completions. The offense is doing a good job keeping the ball FWIS.
24% of the attempts go for 15+ & 25+ yards…or 34% completions the total for both, 15 & 25.
To me, if you are or anyone on here is a "stat man" - that is pretty dang good. Me, I 'd rather just see W's, don't care how we get them. Would be happy with a good ole 6-3 game, just win.
Disagree.…Gunner isn't just a football delivery system. In case you haven't noticed....he's also a running back. And, a darned good one...imo.
They might not have won a couple of those games without his legs extending plays, drives and scores. Not just his arm. Not sure I can say that about Zach....although, he's a significant part of the offense, too.
Maybe....this time.…we just call it a Tie between Stockton & Branch.
Kinda like Pat Sullivan & Terry Beasley.…in the early '70's for Auburn. Both guys were up for the Heisman at the same time.
Pat Sullivan....the QB....Won. But, it was hottly debated at the time.
Lol.…my Dad was a receiver guy.. In his words, "A great receiver can make a good quarterback look great.". I was a Sullivan guy, for my own 10 year old reasons.
Lmao....I was ecstatic when the Atlanta Falcons drafted him in the 1st round. Lol....just goes to show what a 10 year old, knows. He was a huge bust.
But, Terry didn't do very well, either. So....I guess that show "us".....what a Heisman Committee knows. Lol...they picked em. And, they were really, the best. They just played on the best Team.
Which is why it baffles me, as to why the Heisman Committee hasn't caught on, to how great some of our Bulldogs have been, coming out of Athens.
that’s fine…you can disagree. But I’d be willing to bet it’s Branch keeping the opposing DC up late working on game plans and not Gunner.
Maybe that comes in year 2 for Gunner the way it did in year 2 for Stetson. But we will notice how much we miss Branch when he’s gone.
I don't doubt it. Both guys are living in DC's brains. Guarantee it. That's a "tie", in my book.
I don't disagree with highlighting Branch. I just don't think you can do it, at Stockton's expense. That's why I brought up the Sullivan~Beasley, tie-in.
I’m not doing it at Gunner’s expense. Watch how everyone follows Branch and you should have your answer. Gunner isn’t on that level yet.
