I am not sold on this strategy, but time will tell. I will have to give Kirby credit where it is due, as the plan does look well thought out. His staffs ability to evaluate (like Indiana has) will be the key.

Although, as a reminder, Coach Cignetti brought 24 fourth and fifth year seniors from James Madison with him that were developed by him at JMU, all or most of whom started for Indiana this past year.

It will be more than interesting to see if Coach Cignetti can "evaluate" players as well this next season and beyond

WHat I see is you can't stack 4 and 5 stars anymore. THEY don't sont to wait 3 years to play. BUt you should be able to develop the 3 stars into starters by years 3 and 4 without them leaving. Indiana and Michigan model when they won.

“Every signing class from 2016 through 2021 features at least one 3-star prospect who became an NFL draft pick.”

I didn’t realize that was the case, but it is very impressive. I think that the development potential is very high at UGA compared to most other programs, so a 3 star at UGA is as developed (if not more) than some 4 stars at other schools by the time he sees the field.

@Bdw3184 Good point that they retained them to become seniors. If Kirby can keep them that long, it might indeed work. Thanks for the share!

And do a good job of talent and character evaluation, at which Georgia has been among the best.

I hate to say this but a 3* player is considered a real treasure at a Service Academy or a lower tier FBS school, not so much at Georgia. For every Jordan Davis, Stetson Bennett or Ladd McConkey, you get 4 or 5 duds. 3*'s will not sustain a championship pedigree that we're used to. NIL has KILLED College sports.

not as much as unfettered expansion and free unlimited transfers

I'm just not sure we can hang our hats on this plan with developing 3* players. As soon as they start to show potential from the good coaching at UGA agents and family and poachers move in and convince them to "move on". Dawgs are gonna have to pony up on NIL money and find themselves some big donors. Maybe Coca Cola or Arthur Blank. All the oil money and Nike money are taking over the game.

This is not a strategy, this is all we can get unless we pay unproven "rookies" over established players.

So, we are now down to the fact that NIL has us to where a large amount of our players will now be 3* because we cannot afford to pay for the elite players we used to get in large numbers. And this article is throwing in the "glass half full" perspective because Georgia can coach these guys up and some end up in the NFL. Well, the gross majority of them do not, so I am not thrilled with the points being made here. The quality of Georgia player is eroding year after year now that NIL has settled in. This is not what NIL was supposed to be. What happened to paying all players SOME money so they would not be taken advantage of by universities? Why can't every player on the team get $20,000/year and call it a day? The elite players will eventually get their money in the NFL. No one is forcing these kids to play. I have no problem with giving them SOME money, evenly across the teams. But, paying a singular player 2-6 million/yr is ruining the sport! Just one man's opinion.

    "NIL has KILLED College sports."

I've been saying this would happen all along. UGA football was my last sports viewing passion. Now the feds have ruined that too. College sports were always supposed to be played by amatuers not paid professional athletes.
