Here is the link to the quick reference guide to the NLI: http://www.nationalletter.org/documentLibrary/nli-guide.pdf

bottom of first page, how is the NLI declared null and void:

    1. denied admission
    2. does not meet NCAA, institutional or conference eligibility requirements
    3. one year absence
    4. discontinued sport
    5. recruiting rules violation

"An NLI, interpreted at its most basic definition, is a binding agreement between a school and a prospective student-athlete that assures the player will be given an athletic scholarship for at least one full academic year.

It must be accompanied by a financial-aid agreement – walk-ons are not subject to or permitted to participate in the NLI program – and must be signed and dated within 14 days of its issuance by the athlete and, if he or she is under the age of 21, their legal guardian.

It is renewable at the end of each academic year, though a relatively new NCAA provision allows schools to extend multiyear guarantees at the time of signing. But schools also have the right not to renew a player’s scholarship once each academic year has ended.

What they don’t have the right to do, however, is terminate a signed NLI before the player arrives on campus."

I paraphrased the rest of the relevant paragraphs: The school can't rescind it but they can paint a picture for the athlete that its better for them if they go to another school as they won't play much or at all and their scholarship won't be picked up the next year.

This is kinda dated, 2013, but its the only easy to understand source I could find. Thats the link to the full story which is an interesting read.

It also states that the school signs of on the document prior to the athlete. There is a 14 day hold that could be taken by the university.

Where’d you see or deduce that from? JW is from Houston too, so they probably grew up competing in the same leagues, camps, etc.

I suppose it’s possible that the Admissions dept is taking a firmer line on GPA/ACT in the wake of a few reported eligibility issues on the current roster; but the Admissions department’s stated guiding principal is that they put more weight on how a student does in the classroom over the course of their high school career vs how they do in a 3-hour test.

I’d be surprised if it was test score related.

Positive spin: I think this may be a good thing. I think some of these interviews coming out with Evans and the humility this kid is showing will help his public perception and show that he is wanting to work and improve as a young man. Crazy how the tones have changed from yesterday AM to last night and today.
