Some late night points of interest regarding a certain SC defensive end I think UGA fans would care to hear..
My interest was piqued about a week ago on the idea that Burch may be trending towards leaving the state (shoutout to SoFl_Dawg for putting me on), so I decided to dig a little deeper than your typical pay-to-read information. Burch pertains to Clemson recruiting, and part of my job is to be informed in said recruiting landscape. Also, our mods on 247, usually reliable insiders that I’ve gotten solid info from before, are seemingly unaware and shockingly naive to the fact that Burch seems to be headed elsewhere than Clemson. So, I contacted one of my sources, a good buddy of mine who’s well-connected within the recruiting sector in the state of SC, and is also a Clemson booster. Here’s some of the highlights of our convo...
-UofSc is 1A, UGA is 1B. Clem is trending in the wrong direction, quickly. He hinted that we may be running behind either LSU or Alabama, who are in a distant 3rd. It’s going to come down to UofSc and UGA. Clem has all but fallen out of the race.
-Burch liked Clem early on, but we made it clear from the start that we’d likely only sign 4 DL recruits in 2020, and a 5th one likely would not happen, so he’d better jump on quickly. According to my source, Burch almost committed around this time LAST year, but his family advised to hold off (huge Carolina family). Since then, we’ve filled our 4 spots (Capehart, Williams, Bresee and Murphy) and Burch is not one of them
-Moreover, Burch feels “spurned” that we will take Murphy over him. SoFl_Dawg informed me of this last week, so props to him. I can confirm this. It seems there is some bad blood between Burch and Clem at this point, and he is looking to go anywhere but Clemson.
-The obvious answer is UofSc right? His family are fans, he’s from Columbia, and I hinted a while back, this recruitment has taken a “fun” turn at the hands of UofSc boosters, who are throwing everything they can at Burch’s family to keep him in Columbia. But here’s the thing, Burch doesn’t like Carolina that much, really at all. That’s why he favored Clemson so much, and now is favoring Georgia, he doesn’t want to end up in Columbia. He sees their trajectory, and doesn’t think there’s an opportunity to win or develop in Columbia.
-Lastly, he told me Kirby doesn’t lose these kinds of battles. Clem beat him for Murphy, but he’s not gonna strike out twice. He has locked in on Burch, and will not miss out. UGA has everything to sell, and Kirby won’t get beaten by Carolina on the recruiting trail, it just won’t happen. Clemson and Bama may take wins here and there, but Kirby doesn’t come in 2nd to any other school out there if he really wants a guy. The only disadvantage UGA has is where to put Burch on defense. He doesn’t fit into 3-4 scheme seamlessly, as he’s a true edge rusher, who would be nasty in a 4-3 scheme, but it seems like both parties are willing to make it work.
-Thanks again to SoFl_Dawg for getting me to look into it. I would pencil Burch as a Dawg if the cycle ended today. The scavenger hunt may be all she wrote.
Take it all for what it’s worth. I know I’m just the “resident Clemson guy” over here, but I wouldn’t post on any site anything I didn’t believe. I trust my guy, and I trust what I’ve been hearing from others.
Thanks for the insight. You’re not the “resident Clemson guy” as we don’t like that other guy (pretty sure he’s someone else) and I enjoy your perspective as it’s always been respectful and informative. It hasn’t always been the best news but it’s been accurate and put forth in a good manner, so I hope that you stick around and keep participating.
Best non-Dawg on here by far. Thanks as usual.
You're the only Clemson guy anyone here likes
Anyone who is respectful and shares info is ok by me unless they’re gator fans. I wasn’t around during the 80s so I don’t have the strong Clemson hate that some older fans have. I was at the Louisville game and got to see that natty team first hand. It ain’t Athens but Death Valley doesn’t disappoint. I feel like our teams are destined to meet in the playoffs really soon. Keep coming around, I like your info and insight into things.
Thanks for the shout out. I enjoy the info swap. While the news is positive, still got crootin to do here so fingers crossed Dawgnation.
Appreciate the insight but I have to disagree slightly. Kirby simply doesn’t just get what he wants. Especially when it comes to South Carolina. We missed big on Rick Sandidge a couple years ago. I believe we have a high chance of missing on Burch and the defensive tackle Huntley. Those South Carolina kids like to stay home. I am still Hopeful as always but I’m still doubtful when it comes to these guys.
I agree, like I said, UofSc is going to do everything, emphasis on everything, to keep Burch in Columbia. But my friend and I, as do others, believe he’s open to leaving, Very open. If anything can lure him out of Columbia, it’s Athens. Still some work to be done, but from what I’ve gathered, UGA is THE competition to UofSc, no one else really in sight.
As for the Sandidge miss, while yes, that was a miss, this recruitment is slightly different. Sandidge had zero intentions of going anywhere besides UofSc, and UGA still almost swung him. Burch seems to have every intention to go somewhere besides UofSc (once Clemson, now UGA), it’s overcoming the family that will be a challenge.
The Info you have on Burch could not be more wrong. I have friends at Hammond and Burch still likes Clemson a lot and is probably his leader. It will be a battle for sure but this info honestly made me laugh. You will be shocked at who Burch picks if this is how you are thinking. Clemson was always taking 5 linemen this cycle, where are you getting your info...?
Did sandidge end up doing anything last year?
Lamont gave him a good welcome to the SEC
I'm not saying you're wrong, because I have no info, but everyone that knew people in Oxford, AL at this time last year was sure that Clay Webb loved Bama and was definitely going there. For in-state schools, unless someone is like best friends with the specified recruit, I think they probably give generic answers that they love the school. They're going to keep stuff close to the vest to acquaintances and random friends in class.
They didnt miss on Sandidge per se. They had the choice between Sandidge and Bush and took Bush. Plus parent being an alum was a factor.
^ Another Clemson fan with to much Time on their hands. Great
