Hurricane Michael looks a lot like Hugo did when it made landfall...

The eye is perfectly formed. For those with friends or family in the panhandle or coastal plain of Georgia, hopefully they are in safe places.

I used to vacation down in that area. They just got clobbered. 1 mph off being a category 5 hurricane that hit land. CRAZY

It's the strongest hurricane to hit The US since Katrina in 2004.
I don't think there's nearly as much storm surge as we saw then, which is what devastated Mississippi.

Go to CNN's front page, click the headline on the top left and scroll down. On the right side there's 2 videos taken from the same hotel window. The top video was taken first and it shows a marina area in high winds. The second of the same area shows just a mass of debris, it indicates it could be very bad.

Still a Category 3 hurricane with 125 mph winds and almost to Bainbridge. It’s going to do a lot of damage coming across Ga. We had one hit here on the coast last year that wasn’t near that strong and had lots of roof damage and trees down. Good luck to those in it’s path.

TV coverage and videos posted online are pretty scary, but reports from friends on the ground in Thomasville say so far so good.

The forward speed is both bad and good. It will damage more area, but it won't do nearly as much damage along the coast as it would if it stayed longer.

Go west if you have to bail. My son in Biloxi said winds were 10-15 mph at landfall there.

Bainbridge is on the wrong side of the storm, unfortunately, but if you look at the latest update the observed winds at surrounding airports are only tropical storm. I think they might have overstated the strength some, but it will still do a lot of damage. Tornados can spawn, especially when it’s moving this fast and they can knock down about anything. That is the threat tonight. It is going faster than thought so the eye might be out of GA by tomorrow AM.

Mexico Beach was completely under water and had winds gusting to 175 mph.
Fortunately it's a very small community with a lot of managed pine forests around it. Apalachicola is also a very small town.
As tragic as it will be for those who live there, if it'd centered on Panama City the cost would have been much higher.

Speaking of hurricane Hugo, I was there when it came through and was at the Georgia Southern vs Middle Tennessee game aka "Hugo Bowl". Boy what a game that was. (Erk Russell years!!!) I can see why UGA were 1980 National Champs.

Mexico Beach is basically gone. Everything on the beachfront is either underwater or blown away. Panama City Beach is pretty much the same. I came thru it in Thomasville very well. No damage to the house, just debris scattered all over the yard. Lost power about 7pm last night; City of T'ville had my power back on by 9am this morning. If all I have to complain about is going without power for 14 hours, I consider myself very lucky.

Only one fatality reported in the Tallahassee and surrounding counties....Only one fatality reported in SW Georgia. Both from trees falling on houses.
