What’s faster scoring on 3 plays or going 3 and out? Bout the same huh?
Are you suggesting tempo doesn't effect the defense?
No I’m comparing a 3 and out to scoring in 3 plays. They effect the defense the same except one of them gets points. And I’m not saying we need to score on 1-3 plays every series. Just a comparison
Certainly can't argue with that.
"Does Bama get excited because they barely won a game?"
Sure they do. That's what you do when the other team is good enough to almost beat you. I understand you want to blow everyone out, and don't get me wrong—so do I. But the reality is there are lots of elite D1 players in the country and not all of them wear red and black. ND was a good team, and yes, I'm pretty darn happy that we barely won that game.
We have lots of underclassmen that had never been tested prior to that point, and I promise you there is more talent on this team than there was in 2017. There is nothing this team has done to this point that makes me think we're not a better and more complete team than that team was. Compare this year's team to the 2017 team by any objective measure you want. I'm not concerned in the least. We'll mature this year just like we did in 2017.
Remember when folks worried about our team against MSST after we barely squeaked by ND...by one point? "Man, Nick Fitzgerald and that MSST offense...they're gonna give Georgia trouble. Can Georgia keep up with them?" Yeah, mmkay.
There will be plenty of teams that lose to this ND team this year, and they won't be the "barely" kind of loss. This ND team would have beaten Clemson this weekend and I don't think it would've been close.
Yards per Offensive play... current NCAA rankings.
1) Oklahoma - 10.36
2) Alabama - 8.30
3) Washington State - 8.09
4) Georgia - 8.04
5) LSU - 7.99
6) Louisiana - 7.58
7) UCF - 7.52
8) PSU - 7.52
9) Western Michigan - 7.40
10) Ohio State - 7.34
I wonder if those stats are surprising to some people here.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH
Consider me surprised.... Thanks for posting this.
Tempo clearly can have a negative impact on defense. There is a balance that makes sense though. The game has changed in the past few years. A grind it out running game and marginal passing game isn't optimal anymore. Kirby clearly sees this. If the passing game doesn't produce more as the season goes on, I expect Coach Coley will be looking for work next January.
I would agree with this.
Another way to look at UGA's offense is that we've scored 29 times (21 TD, 8 FG). 1 TD was a fumble return, so I THINK the number of scores by our offense would be 28. We've had 44 offensive drives where we weren't taking a knee. That means we scored on about 64% of our drives.
Bama has scored 40 times (35 TD, 5 FG). I think 1 TD was a pick six, so 39 offensive scores. They've had 57 drives. They scored on 68% of their drives.
But 87% of Bama's scores are TD's, while only 71% of our scores are TD's.
I'm less concerned about how often we score... and more concerned with the fact that a higher percentage of our scores are FG's. I think we need to get better at converting scoring opportunities into TD's... not be so worried about how we get down the field into position to score.
This Bama offense doesn't have the running game we have. Where we might get bottle necked is with our passing game. I think Bama is maybe the 4th best team this season, time will tell.
Mainly to the ones griping about our offense....
I am the biggest fan ever of UGA and spent money to prove it, but this playing conservative to not lose is making us the ultimate could'a, should'a, would'a in the big games.
