I'm not surprised I got hammered either, nor do I care. I would suspect most who DV haven't seen the video tape.
In the end I'm happy for the kid, because he really wanted to go to UGA. With three years in the S&C and some good coaching you never know what can happen. He may turn out to be a Kindley.
Yearly reminder: 3-star players are still really very good football players. 3-stars usually wind up starting their junior and senior years of college ball. Or at least play a lot.
Bigger. Faster. Stronger. All that. Soaked up 3-plus years of scheme and S&C as well.
annnnnnnd Jordan Davis....
There are approximately 1.3 million kids playing high football in the US and Canada. So, simply dividing that number by 4 would suggest there are approximately 325,000 seniors playing high school football.
Between 2800 - 3000 young men will sign with a Div 1 FBS team this year......full ride....not including walk ons.
@ least another 2200 will sign and play for a Div 1 FCS school.
So instead of saying Willock is only the 800 or so ranked player in the country.......let's look at it as 800th out 325,000. Or that there will be 2000-2200 players ranked lower than Willock that will get a Div 1 FBS schlorship.
A little perspective helps.
'Tis the most wonderful time of the year: It even inspires @texdawg to get all Mathematical on us.
Being excited over a "blue chip" recruit is understandable and reasonable. Being totally negative about a 3 star that flashes ability that needs a little work which he will surely get with our current staff, is not reasonable. He provides depth and more importantly from his comments he understands that so he won't be a cancer in the locker room. We honestly have no idea how good he can and will be until he goes through the process.
I would understand the negativity if he was added to an already not so great crop of current players and commitments like a UF. But we aren't anywhere near a situation like that as Jeff very clearly pointed out in one of his posts this am. So yeah, Bankwalker and Flatulence, I understand you not getting excited, but stop crapping on the kid. You have no idea how they'll turn out and you really don't have a reason to be so concerned about one player ear marked for development.
My heart skipped a beat when i read the first couple of lines. Then....whew. I am telling you, i think i drank too much coffee yesterday.
OMG he's only in the 99.75 percentile. I am surprised he can move at all. Seriously though I was somewhat critical of our OL given the talent 2019. To me the Wisconsin OL were creating more gaps for Taylor than our line was for Swift. They were doing it through scheme (pulling OG and OT at times) whereas our philosophy was to push their defender back. We had too many 0-2 yard gains between the tackles as there is a limit as to how much you can move the LOS in the time the RB gets to it. Willock by all accounts is big but agile. Have no idea if this is true but it could be CML is looking for more agility than brute force.

Great perspective by @texdawg - I'd add that while recruitment class rankings on sites like 247 are a good indicator of relative class strength, I'd be surprised if Kirby & staff are assessing recruits on any criteria other than finding the best possible players with the specific qualities and attributes they feel they need on their roster at a specific position of need. I read some on these boards complaining that Willock is "only a 3-star" and that the staff is somehow settling; but I'm sure they feel he can be developed into a player capable of starting in the SEC.
They're also evaluating a player on how they'll be used in their system - which might not align with another program/scouting bureau's evaluation when they were projected to be 3-stars. Smart's approach has been influenced by the Saban philosophy, which in turn has been influenced by the Belichick philosophy. Similar to how BB used 1st round draft picks on players like Devin McCourty or Logan Mankins (both All-Pros) when they graded out as mid-round picks, Willock could indeed be the next great Georgia lineman in the coming years.
If Zirkel's 3-star rating means UGA finishes 4th instead of 1st this year in recruiting but he ends up kicking the game-winning FG in the SEC championship game in two years' time, I doubt many fans will be complaining (!)
I think you got the reaction you did due to the "knee-jerk reaction to losing Braun" comment. That comment sounds like you are saying he isn't good enough for UGA. Not saying that's what you meant, but how it can be interpreted.
If Kirby wants a 3 star, then he ain't a 3 star, the industry is just slow.
Before trying to “understand the negativity”, how about first trying to accurately comprehend what has been stated from a positive perspective. I haven’t crapped on the kid, and I am 1000 miles away from your exaggerated response of being “totally negative”. I said he is a physical beast with potential.
I feel like when it comes to recruiting, Kirby needs his own Chuck Norris like comments...
The number one thing I keep seeing the difference of why we aren’t getting those yards like we have in the past is because the defenders do not have to read the QB keeper on zone reads. They always play the RB which that split second or guessing is the difference maker in a lot of our games.
