Still sounds better than many female vocalists today - total trailblazer for an entire generation of vocalists (male & female). She owns the F#5 in the chorus of Alone the way she did at the end of the chorus of Straight On.
The slow buildup of this version reminded me of the buildup of Leona Lewis' buildup in her cover of Snow Patrol's "Run". Probably my favorite live female vocal performance of this young century (so far). Her ability to maintain her tone through the transitions is incredible:
That's pretty cool, and she's also quite beautiful.
If we're talking great female vocal performances of the 21st century, this is one of my favorites (from someone everybody loves to hate, but her talent is undeniable. I'm a sucker for the brogue inflections.)
Great movie too. (Especially if you love Emily Blunt.)
Wow - never heard that. Beautiful voice still...and to be honest I didn't realize Sinead O'Connor had recorded anything since her detour into a reggae career. The Lion & The Cobra was an incredible album...love "Jackie O" in particular.
Staying on the female performance kick - not necessarily perfect vocal technique but Bradi Carlisle's performance at the Grammy's last year performing "The Joke" still gives me goosebumps. Love the clip of Post Malone getting down to it from the audience:
Ok, now we're rolling.
First, that Brandi Carlile performance is beautiful. But equally important, that is just an incredible song. I have never listened to her but I might have to take a dip.
Shifting gears, I couldn't agree more with you about Lion and the Cobra. Here was her American debut, IIRC. I remember watching it live. The vocals blew me away, and the uptight audience didn't know what they were looking at.
Also hurts my heart to watch now, see her so young, and realize (from a life standpoint) that she had such a painfully rocky road ahead.
Brandi Carlile is impressive. Been listening to her for the past hour. Thanks for the intro @razorachilles.
I saw a live piece where she covered CSN, and rather than post that I thought I'd get us off the female vocalist track and back to nothing in particular.
Great harmonies and Stills' guitar playing is really something.
Saw these guys in 1990 at Jones Beach amphitheater on Long Island. Came back a couple of nights later to see the Moody Blues. That was an amazing summer.
Me? Everything TOOL, everything Ozzy, add in A Perfect Circle.... and I’m good.
Two memorable concerts at the Steg while I was at UGA was Heart and Boston - both were amazing concerts (what I remember of them lol).
Totally agree - if an artist's fate is to suffer, then she's certainly checked that box.
Brandi Carlisle is super talented - one of my favorite Americana-vibe artists since Iris Dement.
CSN harmonies were always incredible...not a lot of harmonies to be found in contemporary music the Overdub Era - nice reminder of how it's done!
Which year was that? Love them both, but Boston is one of my favorites.
Sleepy Language from Layo & Bushwacka has a killer groove:
This song is really special to me because I was in a Heavy Metal Band 20 or so years ago, I lived a very rough life on the road and now all I listen to is country and have cut a lot of things out of my life because I wasn't far from the end.... it just so happens that Jinks was in a metal band years ago called Unchecked Aggression.
Cody Jinks - I don't wanna Rock & Roll....
Can definitely see why the lyrics speak to you. Thanks for sharing.
Heart was October 4th, 1977
Boston was January 15th, 1979 (Boston was my favorite band at that point)
Other notable concerts while I was there;
Lynyrd Skynyrd (1977)
Mother's Finest (1977) [an acquired taste but very popular then)
Marshall Tucker Band (1977)
Dave Mason (1978)
Jimmy Buffet (1979)

Can't talk about the Wilson sisters without mentioning Stevie in the all time great chic rock voices
