I lost a friend in a similar manner. I saw the warning signs and tried to council him. I remember waking up one morning and calling his X-wife asking her if I should go visit him. We had a long talk about it and she discouraged me going, but in the in the end it was my decision. I didn't go. He passed away shortly afterwards (within a couple of weeks). It haunts me.
I think you're right.
Agree with almost all your points about the impact of Eruption @pgjackson - but more famous than Jimi’s Star Spangled Banner? Would have to say that was equally as game-changing in its time, wouldn’t you?

I'd put that as a close #2. You don't walk into a guitar store and hear kids playing Jimmi's Star Spangled Banner...but I bet every single day some kid walks in and plays parts of Eruption. Jimmi did blow minds at Woodstock with that performance. When Eruption came out, virtually every guitarist in the country learned to play it...and still do.
Bah! Kids these days! No respect for their elders and they’d better stay off my lawn!
@pgjackson @GradyDawg85
Honestly I always thought it was Gilmore's Comfortably Numb solo. But I wasn't going to nit pick in a thread honoring EVH 😉
That is another all-time great. These are hotly contested discussions in the guitar world. Others that typically make the top 5 or so are Free Bird and Stairway to Heaven. But Eruption is the only one that is a true solo on it's own (not in the middle of a song). Prince's solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps is also in there.
Big fan of all the aforementioned solos. One of my favorites, but less renowned, is at the end of Runnin' Down A Dream by Tom Petty. Still gets me going to this day...
Now we’re opening things up ;). To me, Gilmore’s lead there is amazing for its sparse intensity; not a single note wasted/unneeded; every note perfect.
Different styles, but a couple of Steve’s worth adding: Howe and Morse. Technical, intricate, blindingly fast and so versatile.
I am not a big Van Halen fan but he was a great guitar player. I also wouldn't kick his ex- wife out of bed for eating crackers either.
I think my all-time favorite solo is Jake E. Lee on Bark at the Moon. There is one in the middle of the song and one at the end. Both are phenomenal. Then there is Randy Rhodes on Mr. Crowley. Man, so hard to decide. Randy was on a different level. If he hand't died so young he's probably be right there with EVH as far as legendary rock guitarists.
Good lord Grady, that strat chat site you posted is exactly what I needed in my life. Bookmarked and thanks!
It's very similar to this site - full of really smart, passionate, funny, definitely opinionated folks - only about the pros and cons of pre-CBS pickups instead of the Cover-2! Enjoy, but be forewarned, it's addictive!
There is also a very good PRS site that is the same. https://forums.prsguitars.com/
I have a Strat and a PRS so I frequent both sites. I also have a Guild acoustic and visit their site as well.
PS - I am not one of those really smart guys on those forums. I have only been playing guitar for about a year.
My favorite guitar solo is Gilmore playing on "Echoes".
Back in the day I really wasn't into Pink Floyd. Now that I'm much older I have a new appreciation and love for them. Gilmore is probably the most overlooked guitarist in history. The guy is sublime. Not one single wasted or unnecessary note. Perfection.
Grateful that there haven't been too many Off Topic votes on some of these examples of other guitarists/solos we love...one solo that always spoke to me was Tom Scholz' outro solo at the end of Boston's "Hitch A Ride" - just beautifully put together. Our friend Rick Beato tried to keep up with the solo in his "What Makes This Song Great?" series before throwing up his hands and (accurately) calling it "ridiculous":
Lastly - Rolling Stone posted this old/never before published interview with EVH on the guitarists that influenced him the most. Interesting stuff: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/who-were-eddie-van-halen-influences-1071780/
Sorry if already mentioned, but regarding guitarist, has anybody followed Gary Clark Jr. ? The guy has been likened to Hendrix and highly praised by Clapton. He could end up being one of the best of all times IMO.
His tribute to Hendrix's Voodoo Child..
Randy had that classical style that’s hard to emulate and true he had so much more to give. Zakk Wylde can also tear it up when it comes to solos.
ZW is pure animal! Total freak musician. Dude straight up melts faces.
