Good thread here, can somebody explain the attraction to the AR’s and assault / military type rifles ? I’m old school, have a safe full of rifles - bolt action, ( one shot , one kill ) , over/under and sxs shotguns and prob a bakers dozen pistols and many old .22 ‘s ...but I have never found the ARs attractive or seen a practical use for them, not trying to start hate , just trying to learn,
thanks, Skid
While it’s not completely realistic snap caps can offer a valuable training method. Reload drills, misfire drills, and mix them in with some live ammo will help you work on your trigger discipline.
Without getting too far in a direction that the board doesn’t want I’ll say this isn’t a partisan issue....or at least it shouldn’t be viewed as partisan as it applies to all Americans (and all people for that matter). The 2nd was never about sports shooting or dove/deer hunting. As a police officer it was always about allowing a small level of fear to remain in the govt of its citizens. The ability to adequately protect yourself from govt over reach was the entire point of the 2nd. Hunting wasn’t even in mind when it was written. Certain weapons don’t effectively allow that. They are also effective defensive weapons against criminals that have only become more brazen. I wouldn’t feel adequate in my home or business with a single shot 20ga or a .270 when multiple armed persons are intent on doing something to me or the people I love. As a police officer I more than realized that when seconds counted we were minutes away.
With responsibility there is also risk of misuse through criminality and error (for any firearm). Does that risk outweigh the massive responsibility checks and balances play? I don’t believe so.
ETA - No, the people will never be able to own fighter jets and cruise missiles....but our constitution prevents the military from policing us (if that starts happening you can throw EVERYTHING out the window). I do believe that those weapons available to police, who directly oversee the citizenry, should equally be available to citizens as well.
I also shoot prairie dogs and coyotes with an AR15....so there is also a very practical hunting application as well.
For me, it was an experience I had a couple of years ago. Was hunting (was on the ground; didn't have an option of hunting from a stand) and had a bunch of hogs walk out in the field in front of me(closest was about 30 ft away). I had a bolt action and raised up to shoot the closest one when it turned and looked straight at me. Try holding an 8 lb rifle up for a good 20 mins. It becomes a lot heavier. If I had a semi auto I would have taken the shot and been able to get off more than one shot but a bolt action would have given me one maybe two shots before one of them got to me. We have had a couple of club members who have been charged by a hog after they shot it.
First of all, "Assault" rifles don't exist. There is no such thing. It's a term that the media made up to scare people. Secondly, the AR platform (AR stands for Armalite Rifle...the company that invented it), is one fo the most reliable and dependable rifle systems ever created. It was first developed in the late 50's early 60's. It's been around for a very long time. It's incredibly accurate, light, and easy to repair. It is not a machine gun. It's a semi-automatic...just like most pistols. It truly is an amazing piece of American engineering.

Love it!
Yup
Mine were lost in the water pipe break
There’s a YouTube channel where these guys have one of those epic night scopes and they hunt packs of those feral hogs from distance.
Worth the watch.
Just buy you one and go to the range and you will soon fall in love. They're some of the most fun guns to shoot. But I'm different than most people. I deer hunt with my ARs. I've killed 3 deer with an AR15 .223 and now I've moved on to my .300 AAC to try and kill one. One hunt I killed a coyote running through on me and that same evening killed a 6 point. I love being able to tromp through the woods knowing that whatever happens to my rifle it can take it.
I'll add to the AR that it is probably the softest shooting rifle around. The thing has almost no kick. Remember when that reporter said the recoil on the AR he was shooting was so bad that he now has PTSD? Well, he lied. Anyone who has ever shot an AR knows it has almost no recoil. Children shoot ARs all the time.
So to recap:
Incredibly accurate
Light weight
dependible
Easy to repair or clean
Affordable - they don't cost much more than a shotgun or handgun
Modular (you can make them however you like in multiple calibers)
Easy to shoot - virtually no recoil
Looks cool - it really is an iconic American rifle.
And in North GA. There is no regulation on number of hunting rounds.
Okay I'll stop now . 😁
Well dang y’all are making me want one now thanks
So there is no plug requirements for shotguns now?
Love guns, have owned a small handful over the years. Currently only have a few
.22LR my grandfather bought new in the 1930s. I still shoot it regularly
Browning X-bolt medallion in 30-06
Browning X-bolt Hell's Canyon in 6.5 creedmoor
Remington 12 gauge
I have had a few pistols but have sold them, though I want a Glock 19 next. I had the 26 but wasn't exactly what I wanted.
Shotguns are probably different. I should have clarified rifle hunting.
