Amazon Prime review: The Boys
This one threw me for a loop a bit. It's a Superhero show, but with a very dark twist. What happens if All-American superheroes are actually bad, or at least morally compromised? Superheroes typically possess superior morality and reflect the best of society. But what happens if those super beings have a moral compass that is way off? Worse than that, what if instead of fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American Way, these Supercreatures are motivated by fame and profit and are a product of a mega-corporation that literally sells their crime-fighting services to the highest bidders? It's a very interesting spin on the traditional Superhero story.
No spoilers, but I can't tell if I really like this series or not. I'm half way through season 2 (of 3) and I can't quite put my finger on why I keep watching. It is EXTREMELY violent. Like over the top brutality and carnage. For example, in one of the opening scenes the Superhero who runs at incredible speed (their version of The Flash) accidentally runs into a pedestrian on the street and vaporizes her into a pink mist. The graphics involved are pretty gross. One of the themes of the show is the collateral damage inflicted by people who can smash buildings, shoot lasers from their eyes, and crush things with their mind. Like what happens when Superman smashes a bad guy into a subway car....we never consider what happens to the people in the car, do we? Massive destruction in the pursuit of catching the evil-doer. What if a lot of that death and destruction is just a coverup of something more sinister?
From a philosophical standpoint, it's pretty interesting and I think there are clear comparisons being made between the untouchable superheroes (called supes) and the current political privileged class that go largely unchecked. Not trying to make a political statement, but if you watch you will see the parallels.
Overall, it's very interesting, sometimes very corny and campy, but enjoyable and does kind of make you think about things. I think the extremely graphic violence is very much over done and unnecessary and doesn't lend much to the story...almost like a horror show. If you have seen the commercials or TikTok clips of the show and think this is a comedy or simple action/adventure comic book series, you will be shocked. It's none of that. There are some humorous bits and some cool superhero fights, but mostly it's a very dark, disturbing and twisted take on the traditional superhero genre.
Give it a try, but watch at your own risk.

@pgjackson - from a psychological standpoint, yeah this is one of the shows that will make you pick a side!
Are you on the side of the aggressor or are you driven to be more of a pacifist! Then, season 3 will make you realize that these superhero's are just like all of us, but have an incredible ability or super ability that they have to live with everyday!
I was entertained by all of it, but I am a little weird to begin with and my kids loved it too! Contrary to my wife's opinion, she liked season 1, but didn't like the rest!
You got to be able to laugh at complete silliness!
I hope you enjoy the final 3 episodes!
I think it would be a lot more enjoyable without the gratuitous graphic violence. Is it dark comedy, or just mindless carnage and gore? I don't personally find it humorous, but it does make you wonder why doesn't Superman just lay waste to everyone? There is nothing but his own morality preventing him from planetary slaughter. I am not a fan of the Marvel/DC comic movies at all. I generally find them very dumb and nonsensical. But I think there are enough social/political/cultural parallels aside from all the special effects and super-power stuff that The Boys keeps it interesting to me.
I am looking forward to the new season being released; love the show.
I forgot to mention that it stars Elizabeth Shue. Major bonus points for that!
It is a good show overall…but yes, it is extremely violent. I won’t spoil the endgame plot, but I disliked what I perceived as an American patriots = Nazis message.
There is a spin off show…wasn’t aware there would be another season of the main show.
It is a little bit "woke"...but historically, the hyper-patriotic messaging by the Supes is very similar to the rise of the Nazi party. Whether or not the writers are trying to draw parallels to anything happening right now or if it's just a clever use of historical precedent to show how easily people can be manipulated is a matter of personal judgement I suppose.
Both of you guys are really getting the show I think!
It is borderline anti-patriotism… but I didn’t feel like they went overboard with the message… probably just heightened sensitivity on my part caused by some of the unfortunate rhetoric that gets tossed around these days. I do think patriotism can go too far.
Yea it’s called fascism or nationalism. And it’s a problem all over the world, including this country.
Ya see… there is part of the problem… nationalism does not equal facism. Or, at least, it didn’t, until certain folks tried changing the definitions of those words. Altering definitions for political purposes or to serve agendas is a real problem in the ‘disinformation age’. 🤣
thats what I would expect a Pro- fascist to say
So, stepping away from the political side of the show (so that this doesn't get shut down), do you all think the violence is too much?
i find all violence in media more egregious as j get older. I stopped watching this show mostly because it’s not as interesting to me. I like that they’ve turned the superhero genre on its head and are holding a mirror to our current situation.
Yeah they do a good job of addressing fascism/nazism as well as how celebrity status and power acts to corrupt people. They had parallels to Scientology as well as the NXIVM cult
