I was looking for the last Braves discussion to add to the conversation, but I couldn't locate it so I decided to start one of my own. What a good start for the Braves taking the series in Philly and winning the first two games against the D'Backs. That's some real craziness with the D'Backs taking Friday's game down three runs and scoring one in the eighth and two in the bottom of the ninth to tie. Scoring one more in the 10th to win it.
And Saturday's game. Down 6-0 after one inning, only to scratch and fight our way back for the 9-8 win. Ozuna with the big shot, a 3-run homerun to help close the gap. Banged out 15 hits to win the game.
Go Braves.

I'm concerned about Strider's health and Fried's first two starts.
@donniem Yeah, what an unfortunate situation for Strider, our Ace of the staff. Ligament damage in his right elbow and possible season-ending surgery.

Strider's injury will require they get a front line starter at some point. But there is no rush.
The way they can score they will be fine. But at some point they will need another starter to go with Fried, Sale, and Morton. Postseason.
They do have some good prospects - Elder, Anderson (if he's healthy, Smith-Shawver.
I wish I knew more about the bio-mechanics of pitching and why so many pitchers seem to be getting hurt in the elbow area. Velocity and spin rate seem to be the most discussed factors, although I've not seen any science on the topic yet
I think velocity is the culprit. Ive watched games from the 50's when Baseball was first being televised. Pitchers were just pitching. you've seen the old timey wind ups. Not much strain on the arm and you could still get people out that way. Today you would get killed pitching like that.
So today it's MAX EFFORT on every pitch. Dont worry about finishing the game. Just go as hard as you can go for as long as you can. So a lot of these guys like Strider pitch like closers right from the start.
There were rumors Strider would be moved to the bullpen when he first arrived on the scene. That chatter might come back if he is out a year. Smoltz went to that role and excelled. Strider seems to want to start but that may not be in the cards for him.
Maybe pitchers will move towards the Greg Maddox approach - less than all out but incredible movement on pitches? It's clear that throwing pitches that click the radar gun at 100+ is attractive to the masses, but I appreciate a well pitched game - and Maddux didn't need a pitch clock to throw games close to 2 hours.
Documentary on Netflix you should watch. Fastball.
Ive heard Maddux say he could throw 95 if he wanted to. But why when he can live around 88-90 with movement and better control. Worked better for him.
But most guys aren't Maddux. And when that fastball gets up around 100mph the ball actually disappears. It doesn't really of course but the human mind can only process so much and it will appear to. They go into this in the documentary. Players can only react to a pitch so fast. Once it reaches a certain speed it's basically impossible.
All those swings and misses lead to a lot more pitches as well. Maddux was just fine with you hitting the first pitch on the ground to second base.
Maddux made his living throwing the change-up which I believe is thrown around 80 mph. He had incredible control. During one season, he pitched 51 innings without giving up a walk.
When Maddux pitched that complete game 89 pitch outing. I thought it had to be a record. Not even close! As I recall the record for fewest pitches in a complete is like 58. Shocking
Braves need some pitching
Yep. Snit giving the homerun signal ain't gonna cut it….especially in the playoffs.
there is a plethora of talent just sitting in the minors. Just takes one of them to be ready.
The Braves will never again have a pitching staff like they had in the 90s. Maddux, Smoltz, Glavine, and Rocking Leo as pitching coach.
Nobody is likely to ever field a staff that equals the 90s Braves.
