Just signed former AL 3 time all-star Whit Merrifield, a veteran released by the Phillies. Phillies were using him in a new utility role and he had been in the AL his entire career prior to this (Royals & Blue Jays).
Played and started in every game last full season with the Royals at second base (149 games, 147 starts), outfield (20 games, 13 starts) and DH (2 games, both starts). The 2021 season he had a .277 batting average with 10 homers and 74 rbi's and a .712 OPS. Batted .272 or better every season prior to this year and double digit homers all years but the shortened 20 season (9). Traded in 22 to the Blue Jays and hit .281 with 5 homers the last two months of the season. This is the first time he has faced any time with lack of production at the plate, so I am excited about this pickup by AA.
I like the signing also. He's 35 but he may be energized by the opportunity to "stick it to the fillies." Also watch for Pache to get DFA'd I'm sure AA is watching too.
Not sure how well Pache is hitting but I would welcome him back. Hated to see him leave.
He's not hitting, really hasn't since he left the Bravos, but as Yogi said, 50% of hitting is 90% mental. Coming home could be a key piece for Pache.
( Or something like that.,lol.)
That's because Bobby Cox had to play everyone in the post season like a little league coach.
Yogi and Jethro, 2 of my favorite mathematicians.
Yeah, I used to marvel at Jethro when he would "cipher". But mostly, I was in love with Ellie May when she would take her "critters" to the "cement pond".
I simply love the Braves… but this doesn't look like this is their year…
GO BRAVES!!!
Alas, I fear you are correct. It would take a pretty major turnaround for them to make the playoffs, I think. Untimely hitting and sporadic starting pitching is a bad combo.
And he comes to Atlanta and breaks a finger during infield warm ups, what is going on in Bravos land? Maybe not broken but sheeez!
Kind of like the team this year - not broken but pretty badly bent.
Is Merrifield now just old and in the way?
lets play 2 today or are we in for more rain
I
I was mistaken. The Braves are currently holding a 3 game lead for the top playoff spot in the NL. But that isn't extremely comfortable - at least to me. Those bats need to come alive.
