While I believe Kirby's success is miles beyond the on-going disappointments provided by Richt, the last couple of years seem very "Richt-ish". Just not quite there, Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown again. Recruiting taking 1/2 step back with good, Richt type class but not top 1-3 as we'd enjoyed for first time ever when Kirby took over. O-Line seeming frail & far from elite that Kirby built & missing on some of the "elite" players now all over our rivals rosters. And while HC is among the best, ever, he's losing it a little by continuing with mediocre Coordinators, again like Richt.
I thought Richt did land a few elite QB's though, Stafford, DJ Shockley, David Greene? But getting those QB's made it even more disappointing when Richt's teams did less with more over those years.
Agree on the O-Linemen you mentioned. But we know that @ 2-3 of them will have some injury keeping them out of multiple games next year. And probably lose 1 to injury for entire season. (Just based on recent history.). Who do we turn to if/when the injuries knock a couple of those Big Dawgs you mention out (rhetorical question).
Love it. Still need O-Linemen!!
Yep, that did happen to bama when satan left but there is a slight difference between the 2 players mentioned. Caleb Downs actually played a season before entering the TP; were as Sayin was a recruit like beaver that had yet to step foot on the practice field.
I didn't do in depth research just had that feeling again. Yes CKS has had more success and the entire system has turned upside down. Not sure what the answer is. I prefer the CKS (Saban) method. It just has been trumped by pay for play.
Stafford ('06 - '08) final ranking finishes 23, 2, 13 (AP).
Greene ('01-'04) final ranking finishes 22, 3, 7, 7. (AP)
CKS ('23- '25) UGA final ranking finishes 4, 6, 6 (AP).
On paper, we can probably have a pretty decent starting OL unit… but one without an elite and much-needed LT, and one without much-needed depth. Gunner loves his current teammates, but had we landed Seaton, Harper, Brooks or Tshabola, that big grin of his would have gotten even bigger. Go Dawgs!
I-75 runs both ways, bye.
“Beaver was the No. 12-ranked quarterback in the 247Sports Composite rankings and the No. 174 quarterback overall in the class.”
I don’t understand what this means.
If you are looking at solely HS recruits, the total 4-year roster the last looked is #1 in the country in 2025. I believe we finished ranked #6 this for 2026. Pretty sure that puts the Dawgs the top 2 or 3 nationally (total roster). It looks as strong "as it ever was" to me…no "1/2 step back".
The NIL has certainly made it more complicated; the talent is being spread, depth is not there. It would be made much easier with an unlimited amount of money, but who has that?? The rules have changed so that there are more eyes on the set nationally…the way the "powers to be" intended imo…it's all about money & so far the system seems to be working (more eyes).
Thinks the Georgia's, Alabama's, Ohio State's, etc days of domination are over with these changes - the wealth is just being spread. Given the cards that everyone has been dealt, I like Kirby's model - build from HS first and then supplement from the portal. It is more sustainable in the long run than turning your roster every year.
Thinks Kirby & staff did a phenomenal job this year when all is considered - he squeezed all the juice he could out of his roster he could (50%+ freshman/sophomores).
Easy to poke holes, but no way in hayul would I compare Kirby to Richt - loved Richt and all he did for UGA, but to compare them is just silly.
Not a Bobo hater by any means but that said, it’s probably going to continue on that Richt QB-WR-OL trajectory until Kirby lands an OC with an explosive offensive mindset that actually excites offensive recruits and portal studz.
Just Mark Richt with two National Championships and multiple SEC Championships. We coveted those when we couldn't even smell one. If Kirby doesn't win the National Championship every year, it's unacceptable to many.
Someone commented on Indiana being #1 in the portal and Georgia being #63. The two coaches have different philosophies on how to build a team and Indian has to do it through the portal because they don't have a stockpile of HS recruits to develop. We will see over time how it works out.
@UGACC Your memory is a bit off Fields only played 3 years in college: 2018 at UGA, 2019 and 2020 at Ohio State. UGA lost the SECCG to a historic LSU offense in 2019 and didn't make the SECCG in 2020. However you are correct that having Fields would not have made much difference: UGA still loses to more talented Bama and LSU teams those years, and even in 2018 there was that dominant Clemson team. Indeed, had Fields played in 2020 would Stetson Bennett IV have stuck around or would he have transferred to a Group of Five school for playing time? Even if he had stayed, he wouldn't have gotten the vital experience in 2020 that pretty much made him a returning starter for the 2021 title team.
While it was difficult to endure at the time, the Justin Fields mess worked out the best for everyone involved. The issues that UGA is having now are due to Kirby Smart's aversion to the downfield passing game that he had from day one and his decision to switch from a pro style offense led by feature tailbacks to a spread RPO scheme with RB by committee and a lot of RB touches taken away by the short passing game and QB runs. The result is an offense where QBs, RBs and WRs with the talent to find better situations are going to avoid. UGA was certain that they would just be able to rob Vanderbilt in the transfer portal for skill players at third year in a row ... only to have the Commodore WR that they were targeting choose a Louisville team that throws the ball further than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage A LOT more than UGA does.
The issue going forward is that you are no longer going to be able to stockpile the type of upperclassmen talent at OT and defensive front seven that allows you to win titles with the risk-averse passing game that Smart likes. As the SEC is still a mess, where Kiffin at LSU and maybe Sarkisian at Texas being the only real threats, Smart will have few problems making the SECCG and getting into the playoff. But advancing in the playoff will mean several games against talented well coached teams who are going to know that UGA isn't going to have either a dominant running game or an effective downfield passing game.
If Smart isn't going to just grit his teeth and finally embrace the downfield passing game, his days of winning national titles in Athens are done no matter who the QB or OC is. LSU.
A misstatement due to incomplete proofreading. From 247:
"A four-star prospect, Beaver was ranked No. 174 overall and No. 12 among quarterbacks in the 247Sports Composite."
Also bringing in OL TyQuez Richardson from Alabama A&M. Conflicting reports on whether the 6'5 330 OT is an 85 or 105 addition. Started 12 games at left tackle as a redshirt freshman in the 2025 season.
He nearly flipped to us on signing day. TP allows you to change your mind after signing.
Would have been the top story of signing day had he chosen us then.
Go Dawgs!
