I have also lived my whole life in the south (GA & SC) but never heard about this until I was an adult. I have never witnessed anyone else do it or tried it myself, either.
That's unexplained territory, I grew up all over the South, and it was common every where we lived. Of course my family was not new to the South on either side , and was something commonly seen in Knoxville, Huntsville, New Orleans and the Atlanta area. I know my elders were doing it as soon as Coke was invented. You should try it, it's a bit of a acquired taste. I have to admit I haven't done it in a few years.
Yeah, I have considered it odd that we ( my family) never came across it in practice or by observation. I'm not opposed to it, but it's just never been something on my radar. As much as my wife and I love boiled peanuts, we just don't typically have salted peanuts around to try it .
Now, if you want to talk about Bourbon in Coke, then I can talk 'til the sun comes up about my experiences with that. 😃

I remember 1 service station that had coke machine that bottles were about 1/2 immersed in water. Temperature was set at just above freezing. In summer when you popped the cap ice crystals would former in the neck of the bottle. Nothing better on a hot July day.
My favorite was a drink called Upper 10 if I remember correctly.
Yeah, I remember those old free-standing reach-in coolers that would keep them near freezing. That first sip was rapturous on a hot summer day after playing outside in the street or coming into the store from the hay fields!
The only thing better a coke outta one of those is your favorite long neck!
Speaking of the stores with the coolers. In 1972 my parents bought a lake house in Interlachen Florida. We had to drive through Grandin Florida to get to it. There was an old General store there with an old guy who sat in a rocking chair and waved at everybody. My Dad stopped, I wasn't sure why, we went in and got cokes from one of the old coolers where the lid slid back and the bottles stood up inside. The old guy added up the purchase on a brown bag with a pencil. No cash register. I noticed a big smile on my Dad's face. I remember after he passed away talking about my Grandparents owing stores when he was growing up and it reminded me of why he had a smile on his face in Grandin.
I learned from my grandfather when I was a teenager that there are only two things that go in bourbon or Jack Daniels, ice and a splash of spring water.
My grandfather used to own a small grocery store back in the 50s and had one of those coolers. He still had it when he passed away and unfortunately one of my uncles got it and promptly sold it. Philistine.
Back in the day, if you went into the Georgia congressional offices in DC, they'd hand you one of the small coke bottles and a bag of peanuts. Yum. And I loved the reach-in coolers at the wayside stores and can remember kind of balancing on the edge to make my arm long enough to reach the bottom. Cool bliss on a hot day!
I never heard about peanuts in coke cola. Now peanuts in a RC Cola I remember that.
We put peanuts in Coke and RC in the late 60's and 70's. I didn't see it much being done in the 80's, although when I was stationed in then West Germany, I knew a good ole boy from Okie in my unit that would routinely put nuts in any cola even with his dip. I loved RC and a moon pie. 😎
Ok, I know it's sack religious and I would rather have a Coke over Pepsi any day, but I found That I tend to like peanuts in Pepsi. I'll still do peanuts and Coke if that's what is available. I'm not one of those who has to have
