Okay...what did Mike Griffith say that got people riled up?
Saw on Twitter where some people were calling Mike out about something he said that involved a player’s mom? Was this written or on the podcast?
You know, nowadays I’ve learned that society tends to be too touchy and sensitive. Things get said and someone either takes it the wrong way, or twists it.
No idea what was said/written, but I’m going to reserve judgment until I read/hear it myself. That’s the fair thing to do.

I think I heard him mention something on DN Daily...
I think it was in connection to the beal/Cox thing
If we only want to agree with our own opinions or see things from our own perspective then why even have news articles and journalism, why have this discussion board.
I understand that some may not agree with Mike's stuff, but isn't that the point? to get an alternative opinion and thought process? Fans sure are hard on Mike and while I don't agree with all that he says, he's just doing is job and writing articles from his perspective. Minus the drama he was helping stir up from within on the QB conflicts/divide last year... but he was far from the only one and it was national news and attention
Overall I like Mike, he sometimes gets click baitish but I like his content. I like him better than the doom and gloom that is Chip Towers.
Only thing he said was that he was angry at a mom that tweeted "if you know your son smokes weed then tell him not to go to UGA" if basically what was said and he was pissed off about it. Which I agree with him. How about teach them don't smoke weed and obey the rules.
what school would you send them to where smoking weed in the dorm rooms isn't against the rules then?
That was JJ Holloman's mom.
There is so much cultural tension just below the surface when it comes to this subject and so many related issues. Goes far beyond college football.
I hope wisdom, and cooler heads, will prevail on both sides.
Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida... just the first 5 that came to mind...
I don't know, Florida and Georgia can kick players off their team and then Auburn will take them... I think Auburn may top the list
College kids smoke pot ?
Say it isn't so !!!
The football players are held to a higher ( pardon the pun ) standard but trust me most if not all of them are doing it.
Mike and Chip are Old School...that's what you have to remember. Mike is a career beat writer and Chip is a guy who started looooong before the internet...let alone twitter. So in listening to/reading their stuff I remind myself of that. Frankly Chip has forgotten more about sportswriting than most so called writers.
Frankly I read stories on lots of stuff..not just sports...and sports is one of the few realms where writers don't lapse into Twitter speak and still do some research.I know it's popular with NBA fans but I don't want to follow college football on twitter and I wonder if we'll look back when writing and editors have completely disappeared and miss the Griffs and Chips...
Dang. Usually JJs mom is very pro-UGA on Twitter
Without posting exactly what was said, a lot of this is speculation and could be taken out of context.
I think AnotherDawg is right...there is underlying cultural tension around things like this. Like there’s a lack of “understanding” because smoking pot is more a less a given from where “they” are from. Doesn’t make sense to me, mainly because....aw, you know what? This is much too involved a topic to be hashed into on a site that’s supposed to be enjoyable.
Maybe for another time or place. I know one thing...I’d kick my son’s tail for endangering his free ride thru college, especially doing something he KNOWS is against the law.
So back to mom's tweet. Mike reported it, was not his tweet. Do we blame Mike? Well, he has choices as to what he reports. But adhering to Mom's tweet could be best for all. Lots of top tier players want in at UGA. Neither player nor UGA needs the bad looks.
I went and actually listened to the specific portion of the show. If Mrs. Holloman actually said what he claims, then he was right, in my opinion, for calling her out on it. Instead of recommending your pot-smoking child go to a school where it’s not treated so harshly, why not have them realize it’s against the law to do it?!? This is what happens when parents are their kids’ friends and not their parents. When your kid gets out in the real world, society and the courts are not going to coddle your child.
Onieda Holloman is a VERY nice lady...very sweet. But, she sometimes does what many of us do....jump to conclusions with very limited information. She was on Jussie Smollett’s side early on, BEFORE all the facts came in. It’s easy to do that. But she forgets that....and she did not sign up for this, it just happened...a lot of people look up to her and hinge so much on everything she says. Consequently, that’s a big burden to bear. Because she said this one emotionally driven tweet, many people have become upset and a negative light has been cast on Georgia and Athens Police, when the true blame lies on the kids who broke the law.
Please note that the law itself is another matter entirely. If the law is bad, for whatever reasons, ten it should be changed. But until then, the law has to be abided by and enforced.
Very well said. When I first saw the tweet I was surprised. I don't know if she was frustrated or what when she sent that tweet out. She stated she had been calling the ACCPD about why that amount of pot was an arrestable offense and not just a citation. She couldn't get anyone to talk to her about it. My opinion is that caused her frustration and then the tweet.
Usually her tweets are very uplifting, encouraging, and supportive of UGA and the athletes.
Something I don't understand. We spent YEARS telling everyone how bad cigarettes are for them, millions of $ trying to get them to quit, sued every cigarette company that ever did business, but we want to legalize marijuana.
Am I the only one that sees the irony?
I can’t understand how elite athletes stay elite by smoking weed. One thing for recreational use by others but another when you are training to be the best with endurance.
