Hey folks - as a member of the DawgNation community, please remember to abide by simple rules of civil engagement with other members:
- Please no inappropriate usernames (remember that there may be youngsters in the room)
- Personal attacks on other community members are unacceptable, practice the good manners your mama taught you when engaging with fellow Dawg fans
- Use common sense and respect personal differences in the community: sexual and other inappropriate language or imagery, political rants and belittling the opinions of others will get your posts deleted and result in warnings and/ or banning from the forum
- 3/17/19 UPDATE -- We've updated the permissions for our "Football" and "Commit to the G" recruiting message boards. We aim to be the best free board out there and that has not changed. We do now ask that all of you good people register as a member of our forum in order to see the sugar that is falling from our skies, so to speak.

for sheer longevity, let him be a place kicker. I guess that might mean starting out with soccer.
I played from age 5-19. 1 yr of college. I’m gonna be 49 in October. I have no problems with anything and I don’t keep in shape. Only got hurt once in hs(knee). And I would hit you and get hit. Been knocked out a few times. No problems with my health what so ever.
There are inherent dangers in every sport. Baseball will ruin your elbow and shoulder. Soccer is a bad concussion sport also, terrible for the knees as well. How easy to break ankles in basketball.. if you play golf long enough you'll run into some back issues so it's really pick your poison.
facts
sure, but the odds are not the same. there is risk in driving but the risk in 90 on the highway and 20 through a residential are not the same and therefore is not a valid comparison
I am not arguing kids should not play football or that I would ban my kid from playing football but to compare the injury rate between football and golf is like apples to bowling balls
Yeah you're right. Football gets more dings for obvious reasons but as far as serious injuries it's not as bad as hockey & lacrosse, throw boxing in there as well which is actually worse as far as CTE goes. Competitive cheerleading is actually one of the most dangerous sports as weird as that sounds
for sure. in some ways football gets a bad rep for injuries because sports like boxing and cheerleading are worse.
I'll say I hung out with some guys who played rugby and I practiced with them once. this was when I was in college and was in pretty good shape from wrestling. that is a brutal sport. I don't know about injury rates but if you want bumps and bruises that is a good sport to play
It's the head injuries specifically that are the major fear. Good coaching is a major key here. I had several bad ones in all sports I played, only the football ones denied us water and had us bang heads to show toughness. I would never push a son towards football, but if he was setup for success and had proper coaching I'd let him.
Parents who don’t let their kids plat tackle football are the problem with this country. Coddle your kids. Teach them to expect to be treated with kid gloves. Give them a participation trophy for playing flag football.
That mindset is the same mindset that teaches people we should forgive student loans, guarantee a certain wage regardless of productivity, and votes to tax someone else’s earnings to provide for their own needs.
Let your kids climb trees, make jumps on their bicycles, and MAKE them stay in front of hard hit groundballs instead of stabbing at them from the side like a dang p***y
Boy that escalated quickly...I don’t know who that was targeted at but I hope you feel better.
I'd put money on a wrestler whopping a football player of equal size any day
I agree tfk
My first born is due September 24th. I’m going to put a golf club and a baseball in his hand as soon as he’s old enough. His grandpa is 65 and still a scratch golfer from the tips, so hopefully he gets those genetics. That, or his mama’s brains.
Congrats Sir. The grow up so fast, enjoy them when they are small
FH will wear you out from the tips, especially the back 9. That's stout at 65.
Predictable.
@tfk_fanboy Agreed, but that wasn’t remotely the point.
That wasn't you...you'd never wear a polo shirt with three buttons
As I said last night - football isn't for everyone. There are plenty of great kids with great athletic abilities that shouldn't play football - they don't have the mind set for it. And they are certainly not pansies.
But I do know a bunch of kids that really want to play football - and there parents won't let them. That is what I have a hard time understanding.
If they only knew the benefits of playing football I believe they would reconsider.
And bad coaches are getting weeded out. I'm sure some still exist - but they won't for long. No room in the sport for coaches that don't have the players best interest in mind.
I think this is where I could find some common ground with bankwalker. I think football can teach really great life lessons. And there’s nothing wrong with holding off the pads and tackling until high school. Sometimes it can be both/and rather than either/or
