Mental Conditioning Programs

mattmd2mattmd2 ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

At SECMD17, Kirby mentioned "mindset training." Nick Saban did the same when he discussed "mental conditioning."

I heard reference a while back that Saban had some kind of psychologist on staff to reinforce certain mental behaviors. I mean, Jalen Hurts looks as calm as can be and treats every play like a fresh start. It's been proven that athletes with intense focus can perform better.

Does anyone know if UGA has specialized psychological training for our players for things such as "being in the moment" to enhance on-field performance. Is that normal?

These are the kind of stories I wish chip and Seth would do! Stories about Scott Sinclair.. how he trains, stories about the things that are different under Kirby.. they'll say we can't interview the assist coaches.. but I know all kinds of details about the bama Strength coach.. from the players.. they should be asking Sony and Chubb specific questions about these kinds of things

would love to know about this type of stuff as well

Bumping my own thread from last year. Yet again in SEC Media days, Kirby mentioned mental conditioning and mindset training in the off season. Anyone know anything about this?

Decided to bump the original thread rather than start a new one, so some comments are from this time last year.

Got you, thought he might have wanted to join the inmates at the asylum again lol. I didn't read the dates I guess.

I’m sure a sports psychologist is on staff, as well as Sinclair getting their minds and bodies right. Another part of mental conditioning could be doing stuff like training like Navy SEALs. Builds mental toughness and teamwork at the same time. Doesn’t have to be SEAL training, but there’s plenty of mental and physical training out there.

  • I doubt these people are made available to give quotes to write said stories

This is a great thread. Opens up a whole variety pack can of worms! lol. Would be very interesting if BA or @JeffSentell could report on this some on DND.

Mental condition is basically coach speak saying getting mind right to work. Not be content with last years success or performance but to better yourself and the team each day you put in work. Taking every opportunity to better yourself. Taking opponents seriously each week no matter who it is. That’s what CKS is talking about here

BA has discussed this before. When Kirby was hired he commandeered a specialist from another team who was in charge of athletes' mental health. I don't remember what the guy's name is or what school he came from.

The idea is as old as sports, but leave it to Saban to professionalize and maximize the concept.
Every cliched sign on lockerroom walls is about mental conditioning.

I live near Birmingham and I often listen to WJOX radio which is all about Bama football. And several times they have had some guy on there that Saban hires to come speak to the football players and give them mental training for a mental edge. Just listening to the guy is really awesome! He writes books and I think he teaches at a small university. I wish I could remember his name!
