If you're a new parent or you're an empty nester FX has a black comedy called "Breeders", starring Martin Freeman (original Office, The Hobbit etc.) that's pretty darn funny.
I watched Good Boys the other day. It was pretty good. Worth a watch. Think American Pie, but in the 6th grade.
Then I sat down with the kids and watched the Dora The Explorer Movie... and I really can't express how much more I was entertained by this than I thought I'd be. This movie is hilarious and exactly how a remake of a children's cartoon should be. It pokes fun of itself really well. It's essentially a kids Indiana Jones.
It's awesome... but it might be best for you to just stop there. I think the 2nd was ok, I honestly can't remember. But you don't want to watch the 3rd. Not sure I've ever had more trouble staying awake during an action flick.
I really tried to get into The Irishman too, and just couldn't. I heard that the last 30-40 minutes was worth it, but it still didn't do much for me.
I saw "1917" twice in the theater (once in Dolby Cinema, and that was an experience), and am looking forward to getting the 4K disc. I bought on Apple as I had a gift card, and it still looked good, but I've heard the disc shows another level of detail that streaming doesn't.
I know it's not for everyone, but I really enjoyed, and have watched bits and pieces over and over. The cinematography is just wonderful, and some of the shots still leave me amazed.
In another life I would be a professor in film school and teach a six week course just on 1917. The camera work, cinematography, use of light, sound, the casting, the performances. All of the director's choices, and the incredible attention to detail in the story.
It's not just the hero's journey. The narrative plays out almost like an epic poem, with a precise meter to it, symmetrical patterns, a chiastic structure, working from the beginning to the middle and then like a mirror image from the middle to the end, framed by the first and last scenes, as the main character effectively arrives where he started, but everything has changed, and nothing will ever be the same.
It is so beautifully made and so powerful, it's close to a perfect film. I am moved every time I think or talk about it.
An older series but just watching now - All American - about a high school football player from Crenshaw who ends up in Beverly Hills
The season finale of Curb is hilarious!
I watched season 1 and really liked it. Haven't started season 2 yet.
Watched Forest Gump for about the 25th time last night.
If some of you younger Dawgnation members haven't seen it.......please do. Incredible movie.
And the special effects.....for it's time.....are amazing.
Filming Lt Dan without legs is nothing in today's film making. It was ground breaking when Forest Gump came out.
Also watched "The Accountant" with Ben Affleck the other night. Entertaining movie.
Having forrest meet president footage I thought was incredible at that time as well. Blew my mind then. Special FX have come a LONG way this past decade it's unreal to me.
I know. I was trying to explain to my daughter that the Gov Wallace scene at Bama was actual news footage that they put Forrest into.
Forrest had a great life -
Taught Elvis how to dance
Played for Bear Bryant
Became an All American
Met President Kennedy
Received Medal of Honor
World Champion ping pong player
Met President Johnson
Became a multi millionaire
Ran coast to coast 4 times
Created s.h.i.t happens bumper sticker
Created have a nice day t-shirt
Pretty good life.
Still my favorite movie of all time. It's just got it all.
And Tex, if you can find it, watch the indie film The Accountant. It's one of the best dark comedies I've ever seen.
about to check out tiger king on Netflix tonight..... I think Ozarks is out this month as well
To this day my 80yo mother thinks Gary Sinise doesn't have legs (in real life). Her mind would not accept that it was a special effect.
Also, I loved The Accountant same as you and @RxDawg, even though it didn't get much love from the box office or the critics.
