It's the 247 talent composite.
Gracias Teddy
*Chuckles at seeing FSU at 16 ranked a spot above Miami*
This. I think Pittman’s primary role at Arky is fixing the culture and attitude. If he can get them to play .500 or slightly better ball by the time he leaves, his tenure will have been a success.
The one that would make you chuckle more... see where USC was ranked in 17', 18' and 19'.
Some schools have a lot of talent.....but are lacking in significant areas......FSU- o-line
Oh I grew up a FSU fan...even limited to their roster, their problems go far beyond O-line.
Uga is #1 from the same composite. After say the top 5 or 6, there is a major drop in talent. FSU is number 16 on the list, and just got the brakes beat off them by the number 17 team. Arkansas maybe the 26th most talented team in the country, but they are still garbage. Our final score should have been the half time score. Just saying quit trying to be sunshine pumpers. We all saw the same thing, an eyesore of an offense the first half. Had nothing to do with how good Arkansas is.
Nobody said, and I doubt anyone thought, we played well on offense in the first half. Certainly the OP said no such thing (read his opening statement! Any Georgia fan had to be extremely concerned about our offense in the opening quarter and plenty concerned in the second quarter.
Nobody I know and nobody whose posts I've read is pretending we don't have big issues to fix on offense judging by our first half of the season.
That said, Arkansas might beat some folks which would make us look better than we looked in real time. Football season records are always best evaluated after the season when wins and losses and performances against competition are vastly more easy to ascertain. Once things shake out fully there's not much guessing about how good or bad the competition was.
We know very little yet, but objective rankings of team talent exist. What they tell us is open for debate, but I'd rather have a lot of five star players than not, and so would anyone. I'd also rather posters read at least the OP before thinking they understand what the thread is about, but I pretty often don't get my wish in that or anything else. As long as we show up, and are competitive, and win enough to be true contenders, I'm a happy camper.
Go, Dawgs!
Sunshine pumpers?
Yes sunshine pumpers, your thread title says it all. Arkansas is not better then most people think. They are horrible, have no depth( which is why we pulled away). They are a bad team period. They maybe ranked 26th nationally in team talent, but that still bottom 2 or 3 in conference. No excuse for our offensive performance.
...
Dang...
There are a ton of people that know A LOT more about football, and sports in general, than I do.
From one game, they can decipher just how good, how bad, how talented, how well coached, how prepared, and what the rest of the year will look like...
I was under the impression than there are about 371 variables that determine the results of a game, and that's before the 'rona...
The best computers in the world try to simulate this stuff using every possible variable they can enter, and even then they get 1000's of different results everytime...
The absolutes being driven home this week HAVE to be coming from athletic geniuses like the world has never seen...
ITS. ONE. GAME.
UGA was horrible in the first half, especially the first quarter. No excuses.
On another note, Arkansas looked better than I expected. If I'm an Arkansas fan, I'm optimistic about the future.
Newsflash, both of the above statements can be true at the same time. You're arguing your position waaaaay too hard.
Bama and Florida both played teams with less talent (according to 247) and won by fewer points.
Doesn't mean Arkansas was good, but it's definitely possible there are more than a few teams worse than them. Especially w/ Briles and Odom as their coordinators.
Arkansas didn't have Felipe Franks last year; clearly, they are better.
If that's the case, I'm hoping it's 9-2
I think the initial point is a very good one: Arkansas does have some talent, and they have very talented coaches this year. Odom has had good defenses wherever he went. Pittman, we don't need to discuss. Tex did say he wasn't selling them being great, only that they were probably better than last year's stats indicate.
You can have more talent and still be a garbage team which Arkansas has been for the last 2 to 3 years (far more so than either Missouri or Ole Miss have been). I don't think too much weight should attributed to that data point especially when it doesn't appear to account for how that talent is distributed across the roster. Arkansas may have more talent than Ole Miss but would you rather have the trio of Matt Corral, Jerrion Ealy, and Elijah Moore than anything Arkansas put out there? Frankly, Corral and Ealy compare favorably to anything we have on our roster...and Moore paired with Pickens would have made an elite 1, 2 punch. There is actually a very intriguing what if because Moore was committed to us and we essentially chose Fields over Corral and ultimately ended up with neither long term. You had a team that struggled to defeat a D2 school last season, hasn't won a SEC game in over two years, and is completely overhauling its entire offense and defense during a pandemic shortened preseason with a QB we have clowned for the past three years. We shouldn't get a star for having the largest win margin against them...it should have been higher and the fact we had to struggle to get it and barely cover (depending on the line you got) is a problem.
Even if you don't want to put much weight on the the team talent data point, that's fine. But handpicking three players to try to prove a point about an overall team isn't the best data point either.
Bama also pulled away in the first half like they were suppose to and played back ups the whole second half. If they keep their starters in, they could have made the score whatever they wanted it to be. Y’all coming up with this little spot on sunshine to make you feel better about our win going to lead you to a huge let down.
