1st, Kirby is at Georgia because it is Georgia. Georgia is the current powerhouse and dynasty in college football. Who would leave that?
It is not that they didn't or wouldn't want to go Alabama because it is Alabama if they were offered, they sure would! Its because they were "safer" where they are. That simple. Alabama is a different beast that will take your career and devour it and quick if you fail. Because you have everything you need for success handed to you on a silver platter. There are NO EXCUSES IF YOU FAIL! Mr Deboer might find that his reality was that he was far safer where he was too.
Back to Kirby. Also Kirby grew up in Georgia. Kirby Smart graduated from UGA. Kirby Smart was a 1st team ALL-SEC PLAYER for UGA. He was a 4-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection at UGA. His FIRST coaching job was at UGA under Jim Donnan. He bounced around for a few years and was a RB coach under Richt at UGA. Then he went and got trained by the master so he could come bring GLORY BACK TO HIS BELOVED ALMA MATER GEORGIA BULLDOGS!
Kirby was never an option for that job. Kirby's agent may have made the obligatory phone call and it lasted less than a minute. Kirby is in a category all by himself when it comes to former assistants. He, out of everybody on the planet though could replace Saban and easily. He is the best fit on the planet for that job. None of the rest were offered it or they knew deep down they could not handle it if they were. I am sure Swinney wasn't. I am sure Kiffin wasn't. 2 or 3 may have had a real chance like Lanning, Sark and Ryans. But they were in much safer situations and they were smart and stayed safe!
But Kirby is at home. Home. Unlike any other assistant. None of the rest are at home. There is zero consideration for him to take the Alabama job or any other job. Except maybe the NFL. And Alabama is not the NFL.
Good article, Mike.
There is a big upside for him should he succeed at Alabama but success is defined as equalling or exceeding Saban at Saban's best. He won't be compared to Saban's weaker seasons.
It's possible this guy does a great job at Alabama. We'll see. Frankly, I'm not entirely sure that he's made a smart decision taking the job. He will have a long row to hoe especially considering the probably unrealistic expectations built into any deal with Alabama.
I've not seen anything about the money. Does he have JImbo's Golden Parachute Package™ to cushion the fall should he be great but not quite great enough to please the Gumps? What was he making at Washington? What will he make at Alabama?
Somehow this reminds me of Dan Mullen and Billy Napier.
Go, Dawgs!
Good points, Mike. Alabama will likely spin it as DeBoer was their first choice, but everyone knows that someone from the tree of Saban was the desired option. The fact that none even interviewed for the job is telling.
I've read that "Saban will have an office in the building." Having the GOAT there and on-hand for advice early in the transition is a positive, but for how long. How long before DeBoer thinks it's too much?
I wonder if DeBoer really knows what he's signed up for. Coming in with the most talent in CFB already on-hand is a no excuses situation, the opposite of a rebuild where any failure will be reflected back on the new piece in the process. It's going to be something to see...
The SEC is a different beast than the weak Pac12. If he makes it 3 years and no title, SEC or National at Bama, I'd be shocked if he isn't replaced..GoDAWGS!
@SmartsTheMan I read that Saban's office will not be in the Athletic Building but in an Administrative Building and it's unclear how much time he will actually be in Tuscaloosa. He has filed for permanent residence in Florida.
If he can keep the current players he could do well. He has won with a lot less talent. How many 5 star recruits did he have? One or two? Obviously he can coach having lost 12 games in 9 years according to one reporter. We can only speculate at this point in time and that is ok. Some will be wrong and some will be right. Time will tell.
3 years max and it all comes down to can you do it in the SEC?: Bama couldn't get the top 3-4 on their list and settled on this guy.
Columbus-1000% correct my friend and you are a true Dawg. Georgia is the premiere University in the country and will be for the next 10 years.
Talk about a tough act to follow! Can you imagine being the coach to replace Nick Saban? All in all, I think DeBoer is about as good of a hire as Alabama could have made at this point.
All Kalen DeBoer has done is win.
You can't argue with success. If he can keep most of the current roster intact then he's off to a great start. If he can't then he can always hit the portal himself. He's proven that guys want to play for him. I'm not worried and neither should Bama fans at this point. Just regurgitating other SEC coaches under Saban's tree to takeover does nothing for the program.
Kalen needs to do things HIS way, under his terms, and create his own program. He knows how to win, and if he can't do it at Bama then he'll be replaced. He'll just need to keep the Bama boosters at bay from trying to tell him how to run his program, because they probably want him to be a Saban-clone. Instead, a fresh perspective and new look may be just what Bama needs. Let's give him a chance.
It will be interesting to see which coaches DeBoer brings with him from Washington and who is let go at Bama. I may be wrong, but I think his OC and DC have been with him throughout his head coaching journey. I believe Bama tried to hire his OC (Grubb) last year before they had to settle for Rees. Go Dawgs!!!
Here’s Hoping that he’s a massive fail and that Kirby and our Dawgs beat the brake shoes off of him and Bama every time we play them.
Also Hoping that we not only retain the best State Of Georgia players but get All the best players that Bama used to get. Wishing him the worse. Go Dawgs !!
Retrospectives are all we have as metrics for the future. DeBoer knows he has gargantuan "shoes" to fill. I am also confident he will Golden Parachute to safety if this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity goes "south." We should know in a couple seasons.
Yep. Agree. This is my humble opinion as well. Hopefully we’re right and he’ll be a big time fail !! I’m not gonna wish Good things for Bama they are our Rivals.
Dawgs fans should’ve seen the comments on Their board after they “won” the SECCG. They were Laughing and commenting about knocking us out of the 3Peat. They are some of if not The most arrogant fans in CFB.
And hopefully like UF they will have to change coaches like socks !! And sink into the abyss like UF. Winning at WA does Not equate to winning in the SEC in particular Bama.
And I’ve got a feeling that he’ll think he Owes some of his coaches from WA and let some of the current coaches at Bama go. There by cutting ties in recruiting even more. Go Dawgs !!
All I know is WAshington beat Oregon twice in the same year. I thought ORegon had the better team. It's hard to beat really good teams twice in the same season. Washington and DeBoer got the best of LAnning and a 6th year(?) QB. I don't know what CKS could learn from LAnning? How to get beat?
