I guess we'll have to see how it all shakes out. Getting Lane Thomas might prove beneficial. If any of the relievers work out, we may well see Fuentes as a starter. If the one starter he traded for does OK with the Braves' bats behind him, Didier may well stay in the pen. No blockbusters this year but we did save all of our top prospects, especially top pitchers. If one or two of them come up in the next two years we may well be glad he did not overspend. Most of the deals he has made have seemed to come out better for us than the trading partner, so my fingers are crossed.
If Shawver and/or Schwellenbach pan out this year, we might be OK. It would be tough to beat the Dodgers even if he traded for the All-Star team.
I read the Dodgers now have over 1 BILLION $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in deferred payments that they owe. Something might have to be done to prevent that sort of thing.
We have one post season starter. Period. If Sale goes down, we have none. Zero. Let that sink in.
I've always enjoyed studying the box scores from the daily games. Back before 24/7 tech access, I couldn't live without the "afternoon paper" during baseball season. Had the eastern box scores in the Constitution and the west coast box scores in the Journal, which you could pick uo for 10 to 25 cents, depending upon how old you are, lol.
It is absolutely amazing how few hitters are posting above .275 these days. The majority of team's lineups have 5 regular players at .265, or below. We still watch every game we can and enjoy them, of course. But, these offensive performances of today are really different. Seems like it's bomb or bust!
P.S. AA probably is in the top 5 of General Managers today. We have very few deferred money contracts, if any.
I also look at the Braves' box score a lot - mostly concentrating on OPS. The usual suspects are above .715 - close to the league average most season. Lately, more players with below that have been in the lineup. Even those with high OPS numbers are not hitting for batting averages at much above that .265 mark you mentioned. Been that way for a while now. Things have changed.
One thing that for sure has changed is everyone throws 100mph today.
I was watching an old game and Mark Wholers was pitching. He was hitting 98 or so. The announcers were making such a big deal of that fact.
Today that would get you a yawn.
There were guys in the old says that threw hard. Bob Feller. Nolan Ryan. Bob Gibson. Plenty of them. But I do think it's tougher today. For one again everybody has nasty stuff. Two in the old days the guy you faced in the 1st was the guy you faced in the 8th. Only tired. Today it's a fresh guy throwing 99 as well. That you haven't seen.
Ive heard guys like Chipper talk about this. They want to be respectful but you can tell they kind of know things got tougher.
For sure, it ain't the same game. Same name, different game.
Been silent for a minute, back in the game. In my opinion the June swoon started when Kim was activated, 20 million so he has to be in lineup. Not only did we not gain anything substantial in trades, I believe we regressed. Pitchers we gained seem no different than ones up and down from Gwinett or outright released. Gave away a catcher.
My opinion is Kim will have a negative effect on clubhouse, should have just been released. Hope I am wrong.
That clubhouse thing is interesting. Given the veteran leadership, I would say Kim would be treated fairly. Not sure what his personality is like or what his standing in the clubhouse was pre-injury. Maybe he was well liked. Maybe he was not,
But…it is only human nature to have some type of reaction when some players who have been doing well (Dubon, Jarvis) may have to sit or take a back seat, at least for a minute. They optioned Mateo, who seemed, at least from watching games, to be a pretty popular guy. Will that have some effect?
I did hate to see Bart go. He seemed to be doing an OK job back there. How long will it take Murphy to get back to his former level? Will he ever do so?
I like the addition of Thomas. The others? Just have to wait and see. Current feeling about all the deals…meh.
A big plus for me is we did not give up any of our most promising, upcoming players. . If anyone has proven it's not possible to have too many arms, it's the Braves. So, good for AA for keeping the farm pretty much intact. We also have several very promising position players on the farm and he kept them, except for the injury prone Nacho Alvarez.
Maybe some of the best trades are the ones you don't make?

There's an old legend about the hard-throwing great Walter "The Big Train" Johnson in the early 20th century before there was night baseball.
Legend has it that as the innings got later and the sky drew darker, the catcher pretended to throw the ball back to Walter and he pretended to pitch the ball and the catcher would pop the mitt like he just caught it…..the ump called a strike and he and the batter got into a heated argument as the batter thought it was "way outside!"

Ive said it here a bunch and yeah I would be mad if I was a player. Why are we playing Kim when Jarvis is actually hitting some? I get you paid him a bunch but sometimes it's better to not keep throwing good money after bad. You've already burned that cash. Dont cost us more games trying to make this work.

Just do not see Kim as a pressure player, now under even more pressure as every at bat and fielding attempt will be scrutinized. In your head you know you not worth anywhere close to salary being paid. Your salary not your fault, just an anomaly that somehow your agent got for you. AA either drunk, drugged or on some mystical high to agree to that salary.
Every time you strike out having to face teammates in clubhouse, just better off not being there. IMO

And no mound for leverage. I don't know about 100 but he seemed well over 90 there.
Which means he was probably touching triple digits when actually playing.
