Totally agree as to the "Iron Man" status of Cal Ripken, Jr.!!!!
I was just trying to answer @donniem 's question as to how they count game appearances…..totally was not trying to infer that Mr. Ripken's appearances might be a "token" merely to keep the streak going.
He was awesome in his day, and still is!
Everyone remembers the home run he hit in his last all-star appearance, right!!!?
If you are an Oriole fan too @RomeDawg288 I hope you got a chance to meet Brooks Robinson.
I may have told this one before but back in the 80's card shows were a big thing. Me and Dad went to three. Mickey Mantle which I know Ive shared before. Then Brooks Robinson and Jose Canseco.
Mantle and Robinson were class acts. All the way. Canseco never looked up from the table once or acknowledged anyone. Total and complete jerk. I would've been 12 or 13 and looked up to players like him. I had a lot to learn.
Robinson again was the complete opposite. The line was long to get his autograph and there was a kid in a wheelchair just ahead of us. Robinson noticed and stopped everything. He went up to the kid and asked if he would sit with him for the rest of the show.
All class.
No, but I did get to meet Boog Powell when getting to take in an Orioles game at Camden Yards back in summer of 2007. That was truly awesome.
Braves win! Philthies lose! Braves win!
Another outstanding start by Perez. 6 shutout innings. Picked the Braves up after Elder's disastrous start on Monday night. Clutch hitting from Ozzie (solo HR) in the 5th and a 2 run shout from Olson in the 8th, which gave the Braves a 4-0 lead going into the 9th. This tied Olson, at the moment, for the ML lead.
Iggy redeemed himself a bit with a clean 9th. Very nice to see.
The rest of the innings Fuentes (7th) and Lee (8th) were also clean to complete the 4-0 shutout.
Gained another game lead and the magic # shrank by 2. A good night for Braves' fans.
Phillies now in real danger of missing the playoffs altogether.
That would be sweet!!
Ain't that just ducky? Couldn't happen to a better group of entitled jocks. I like Mattingly, somewhat, but has he ever won anywhere?
As a player? I think so. Was pretty darn good with the Yanks. As a manager? I don't think so. Was great when he took over this year, but not so much after that big winning streak that scared me at first.
I looked up Mattingly's player career on baseball reference. He had a 14-year career, all with the Yankees. His best years as a hitter were in the 80's. During a three-year stretch 1984-1986 he averaged a .340 BA, 48 doubles, and 125 rbi's.
In 1985, he won the mvp award hitting .324 with 48 doubles and 145 rbi's.
And in 1986, he had 742 PA and just 35 strikeouts. Pretty remarkable.
w/o a doubt he could strike the ball. Could his niche be as a hitting coach?
They lost last night with All Star starter Sanchez pitching and today with ace Wheeler on the mound.
Those are the games they count on winning.
Month and a half left unless something changes they are in trouble.
Welcome to Atlanta Lane Thomas.
GO BRAVES!!
AMEN!!!!
