A couple of points on the people getting in a kerfuffle about the Evans/2nd RB recruitment. I think you can be worried about the fact that two years in a row the Dawgs likely have put off getting a 2nd RB until another year and for a team like ours, that can be concerning. Not just #s but it's putting A LOT on Zeus being back all the way. PWOs? OK?
So I can see @ihateusernames point without it being a condemnation of the staff. Stuff has happened beyond their control and that's life but it doesn't change the #s and while it's being said that RB is now not a primary concern, why is that?
Because they aren't happy with the 3rd tier to take one of them because the value isn't there or because they've seen so much from the backups this year that they decided no real need? I'd hope the latter but suspect the former.
I don't think it's an instate or out of state thing at all though and I was fine with going all in on Evans but worry about the #s, especially breaking in a new QB and O-line so probably going to be even more run heavy(if that's possible).
It's because we are getting Joe Brady as the OC and no longer need 5 RBs
Gonna be throwing it 65% of the time with Jake Fromm/D'Eriq King back there in 2020.
I can't say that I've seen much of this but would we recruit a grad transfer RB? Seems like most backs good enough to where we would want them only stay for 3 years and then jump anyway, I guess. Just something I haven't seen mentioned. Maybe juco?
If Prather as the fifth RB and has to play we got bigger problems
^^^^FYI, when I put that gif above, didn't know the smoke was gonna produce a dollar sign. Not indicating bags being dropped - lol.
my question for @JeffSentell would be if the Dawgs signed Stroud to pair w/ Beck as incoming true freshmen - seems that would hurt efforts at recruiting Caleb Williams for the 2021 class. Seems like it would probably be an "either/or" scenario as Caleb has options as #1 QB and 5-star in 2021 class.
I think you fill your immediate needs now and worry about the next recruiting cycle afterwards. The same issue will arise if UGA lands Williams in the 2021 class. If Caleb Williams comes to UGA, then you might be out of the running for Stockton the following year. If you let a recruit that is more than a class out, influence your current recruiting plan, it very well could bite you in the ass and most likely will.
Any idea of what our selling point is for Stroud? It seems tough to sell a guy into coming into a QB battle. Most kids would rather be sold on being the marquee recruit. I have a hard time believing we can win this one over Ohio State, I wish we'd focus on Zach Evans and convincing Jakey to come back
Edit: Jakey was autocorrect, it's what my son and wife call him. But I'll let it stay.
Wouldn't he have to compete with JF at OSU? I imagine most recruits would rather take their chances with another incoming freshman, than to battle a player who has been in college for a few years and knows the playbook.
I would imagine the selling post is that Fromm might leave and you will be able to battle it out with another true freshman, a guy who has only played a handful of D1 snaps and possibly a redshirt freshman that has never taken a college snap and a walk-on.
I guess, but I think it's easier to say "wait one year and you're the guy". Selling a guy on coming into competing seems like a tough sell these days. Seems like a recipe for a transfer, especially if Fromm does return. But I understand your point
I don't disagree with your statement but believe it would be likely an "either/or". As we saw w/ Eason/Fromm/Fields (Murray/Baker), etc. - highly rated QBs one class apart isn't gonna work out over 50% of the time.
They’re going to take the best QBs they can get each year. Loser of competition would likely transfer out, it’s the way the game is played now days.
I don’t see these combos happening:
