Less than an hour away from what could be a seminal moment in Crean's career at UGA.

Tom Crean's comments are very troubling to me. Did Kirby whine about the small OL that he inherited from Mark Richt ? No, he went out and recruited the massive monsters we have now and yes, he ran some players off , and still does, but he doesn't go out and publicize it . I loved the energy and excitement that Tom Crean brought when he was first hired and have been a big supporter of his until this unfortunate outburst. You never throw your players under the bus , ever. If we don't get Ant Man, expect more people to turn on Crean .

agree edwards buys time....also its uga.... so....we are footbal.... he has time regardless....i disagree with the portion of your post dealing with strategy...its a game... so any strategy can be used at any time to counter....i agee some coaches tend to lean on one strategy more than another...lots of teams winning with strategys used by fox every week...look at virgina using high low or 1, 5 and hanging with duke and coach k with much less talent. High low is as old a strategy as peach baskets. crean leans toward a player lead player free type strategy. This leans heavily on being more talented. The real test will be can he recruit well enough for his strategy to work. is it sustainable. if uga is so bad that ant man does not make the jump in 1yr.... that will be used in recruiting against crean ...and would be huge obstacle...

Whenever Bama won, which was often, Bear Bryant gave his assistant coaches and players all the credit. When they had a rare loss, he took total responsibility. That was in interviews to the press and public. Don’t know what he told the team privately after a loss, but I will guess it wasn’t pleasant.

There’s a story about him appearing to console a player after an ill-timed personal foul. He tells the player that all the people in the stands and on tv think I’m consoling you, but son, if you ever make that **** mistake again...

Kirby has done the same thing...called out players toughness several times

I'd like to think so but I'm not sure I quite see it. Edwards should provide a boost, and as long as it goes well, could help change the program to what it really should be (recruit a touch better than Fox, combined with the Edwards-type here and there), but I'm not sure of how major a boost.

PG: Is there a grad transfer PG or JUCO guy that can be 3 and D with the ability to penetrate if needed? Or can Tye Fagan perhaps play that role? They won't be the main ball handler imo, but the ability to play a secondary ball handler role is important to me.

SG: Anthony Edwards: No questions here. I see a more athletic Harden when I see him (he's an underrated passer) and also a bigger Donovan Mitchell. I can very much see him acting as the actual PG for the team (in fact I bet it happens) and although it's a ways out, I'm already excited to see him play.

SF: Jaykwon Walton if you want to go more traditional (because Hammonds is a combo SF/PF). I don't know much about him but he's a 4 star.

PF: Rayshaun Hammonds: He has more potential than he's shown, and perhaps a big time player coming in can help it shine through, but some of why it hasn't shone through is on him.

C: Nic Claxton: If he puts on a bit more weight and sharpens the 3 point shot, I think there's a good chance he's a late 1st round pick after his junior season in the NBA. Looks like a RAW Chris Bosh right now.

Okay, I've convinced myself through typing it out, that looks great if PG is settled as a 3/D guy that can help with penetrating on occasion. That's not even talking about the other players, but I honestly think one or two are going to leave. I think the main bench players will be Crump as a microwave scorer, Fagan or Harris (or maybe both if that grad transfer/JUCO guy happens), Camara, and Ngumezi.

i think we will go Hightower or Crump playing with Edwards unless we get a huge grad transfer or pull a guy like Quinones

  • GeorgiaGirlGeorgiaGirl Posts: 1,854 ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

Crump ain't good enough defensively to be a starter and it wouldn't surprise me if Hightower was one of the guys targeted in Crean's comments and he chooses to leave.

  • brentwilsonbrentwilson Posts: 2,677 ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

i don’t think he was targetting anyone. he met with the team and said he was sorry and he misworded it. Claxton says the team is closer than ever.

Coach Crean complained that perhaps he shouldn’t have kept some players. The truth is he had no choice. He applogized so we are all moving on. Getting Ant Man is huge and we’ll just have to look forward to how that changes the game next season for us. I tried to watch some of the game tonight but it was painful. Missed shots, forced shots and careless turnovers has the mark of a team that is defeated. There is a lot of optimism with Edwards and rightfully so. Next year has to be a major improvement.
