What is the total receptions of those 8? I know 7 of them have zero, not sure on Bush. That's what concerns me. They may prove to be good but would feel better if there were more top 50 players in the group. My money is on Rosemy, Blaylock, Pickens and Jackson to save the day.
Two years ago, we'd have killed for this WR group of recruits and specifically a WR of Rosemy's quality. There's zero reason to doubt the staff's assessment of JRob and the people that have seen him in person all come away impressed.
If we get Wren, I see a Tyreke Hill ceiling by his third season. The absolute floor on him is a stud returner, kicks and punts. And I guess the first leg of our 4x100 relay team.
So, am I happy with this WR class and our WR room in general? Yes. They are young, but if our small handed QB is a future first rounder, he'll carry them early in the season.
I'm really just kinda playing Devil's advocate here but on the comps I keep seeing about Wren: Mecole was a 5 star who finished his career at UGA with under a 1000.
Imac: loved watching the guy but he was an undersized return guy who played some WR and had a few highlights. He was also brought in at a time when taking a shot on a random 3 star was not an uncommon practice at all because unless they were instate the bigtime guys coming to UGA to play WR were rare.
Mainly though, where on earth are all the even more outlandish predictions about this kid coming from? He's really NOT the first track guy that someone thought to try to put at WR...there's a loooong history of this.
It may work out and I hope it does but Tyreek Hill comparisons and projecting production about a guy that I'm willing to bet 99% of y'all couldn't name if he wasn't linked to the Dawgs!!!
If you're "All in On Wren", that's great but let's pump the brakes a bit and try to understand why some may be skeptical.
PS: I'm not saying I'm not trademarking "All In On Wren" just in case. ;)
Regarding the WR's and placing value on those scholarship slots: Hypothetical situation
Say we take both Sewell and Flowe rather than just one (both are higher rated than our 2 "project" WR's). We have Rice, Tindall, Walker, Dean & Marshall already on campus. Why log jam the room with the potential to lose just one of those guys? That'd be a totally wasted scholarship for at least 1-2 years. Not much value in that.
Say we use that scholarship on a project at WR like Wren (Robinson will make a lot of you eat some crow here). A guy who knows he can get some early PT returning kicks but to be an every down WR he'll need 2-3 years (just like mecole who was a wildcat QB in HS no less).
That scholarship is worth more with the WR. We can potentially get production from him in year 1 with higher production potential year 2 assuming that one of the ILB's would have transferred instead. It's elite roster management. Plus the kid runs a verified 4.3 guys.. that's special. Maybe, MAYBE 3-4 dudes are coming out of high school running that. It's wayy worth the risk rather than spending the scholarship where we have championship caliber depth already IMO.
I apologize for my Forum ignorance, but what is a DSGB? I know I'm going to feel gator when I see the answer.
One final question. Would you take a chance on offering Gilbert a WR spot if that is the only reason he is going to UT (if that's where he ends up) versus Wren? I would and not just for the rankings.
rolls eyes
Mecole never rescheduled his potential, but he was very good for us...come on...someone has to return kicks and punts.
McKenzie was reliable and good for us.
Wren is faster than both. We’re not going to get the best player at every single position and we got a #1 last year with two other very good receivers. Blaylock is going to at least have one big play this year.
Staff hit a primary target 2x with WRs. Robinson was #1. Fleming/Rosemy we’re on same level and Rosemy “ didn’t really like our offense and we still pulled him”. Misses on 5* speed WR, then lands a 4.3 40 guy.
Now questions are warranted but as you think on this further, here are a few names staff told no: Jermaine Burton, Rico Powers, Leonard Manual. Gotta be in a good place with the roster to pass on these guys.
That's true. IF you take it as a fact that Wren is not only going to return kicks as a freshman, but that he's going to be an every down WR in the future.
He could also not pan out and be taking up a scholarship while Flowe or Sewell stars for another team enroute to the NFL. Those are the predictions the scouting services are making. We'll not find out who's right for awhile.
I'm actually a lot cooler with it looking at it as @SoFL_Dawg put it: they wanted a specific type of guy and I guess didn't feel like they could get the first choice. That makes sense.
But according to him, Wren wasn't even the staff's first choice so I guess I don't get all the chestthumping, outlandish comps, and star predictions about a guy that noone knows much about other than his speed.
Is everyone just trying to talk themselves into the guy?
