I saw us connected to Syndergaard and I must be honest, didn't really float my boat.

Really we only need a reliable closer in the pen, we've been really good the past 3 months in every other inning. Having a specialist at hitting lefties in right field would be huge in postseason play where righty lefty matchups are very important. Markakis has struggled mightily against left handed pitchers. If we can pick up a utility player who can play both corners of the outfield and abuse left handed pitchers, the before mentioned closer and a starter, preferably one with proven postseason success we'd have a team built for postseason.

Totally agree, would be a very successful deadline (depending on who we give up, of course).

Would you look at that. One of my comments was vindicated tonight. I said that the Phillies were sitting on Soroka sinkers 22 days ago and it was not necessarily just him being off. Well guess what…McCann and Soroka agreed with me instead of going with the idea of his sinker is fine if he locates it and he just had poor location. He worked off the 4-seamer the first time through instead of his sinker!

It wasn’t that he didn’t have feel of the sinker either to me, his sinker was still moving very well, at least to me. Once again though, he got screwed over by a few BS hits (and yes, even guys that just go off of eye test are going to agree with me because we complain about it all the time in my other channels), and Kingery’s bloop hit costed him the win. But I was told low ball hitting and weak hits don’t exist!

Good developmental outing really, as I think that’s the first time that he and a catcher agreed to throw the 4-seamer more than the sinker. And it looked like a good idea and he was locating it well. But they did slowly add in more of the sinker as you don’t pitch the same every time through.

Not sure that sending him down would be the best thing. He was already blistering pitchers in AAA when we called him up. Pitchers have made adjustments to him, now he has to make adjustments. In order to do that against mlb pitchers, he has to face mlb pitchers. Just my opinion.

I agree with you, and tried to say as much in my post. It would probably be best for his development to work it out up here.

My big point I wanted to make was the Braves are not in a position to let a young guy figure it out up here. We need to win now. If he was struggling a little bit and playing good defense it would make more sense. But he is struggling a ton at the plate and isn’t a good corner outfielder.

This is the 2nd game in the past couple of weeks where Soroka couldn't close out the 5th in a blowout win. His delivery gets off a bit and he struggles. Just 1 more out in each game and he'd be 12-2.

It's not uncommon for physically gifted hitters to start out strong then pitchers learn their tendencies and they struggle. It happened to Frenchy and many others. Frenchy never really overcame it to a high degree. This is what will define Riley as a big league hitter, can he adjust after pitchers have adjusted to him ?

I pointed out Wednesday that Swarzak hadn't given up an earned run till Tuesday over his last 17 appearances and had allowed just 1 inherited runner to score.

After tonight Newcomb has only given up an earned run in 1 of his last 18 appearances and 3 times over his past 27 appearances. Over those 27 games he has pitched 35 innings and his ERA is just 1.29. Add in Webb and we have very good pitchers for the 6th through 8th innings. If we can trade for a closer and move Jackson to a setup role we could have a great pen for the postseason.

We beat Philly and The Dodgers beat Washington. Plus one good guys. We're up 5.5 on Washington and 6.5 on Philly.

Hearing that after getting hit in the wrist, markakis is probably going to have to miss some time. Duvall should be up if that’s the case. Crap luck, this happened to Freddie last year as well.

I know some posters don't think much of Markakis as a hitter, but the lineup will be weaker without him.

I feel like in his absents either Riley needs to play out of his slump or bring up Duvall to play. I’m fine with either in my opinion. Either way Duvall should be in phili tomorrow

I'm a huge believer in the value of high OPS from top to bottom of the lineup. We will get more outs in his spot and it will kill some innings.

Losing Markakis will be a blow, but injuries happen. Hate it for him and the team, but, next man up. Whether that is Duvall exclusively, or a platoon between him and Culberson, he or they will have to produce.
