It's different for everyone man, when I was being recruited all I personally cared about was relationship with the coaches and Academics. Some people care a lot about facilities, some people are really stuck on being on the best possible team and some people want to be where they're wanted the most. Everyone's personality is different man, if Tank's personality was different he'd be waiting on the Evans commitment but he took it personally that he was the second on our list... Everyone plays the system differently.
@NoahSewellFanClub thanks! In addition there’s only one rock and few spots at a position. Really stresses how difficult it can be to decide at the highest level. I kinda laughed when I read that either Noah or Darnell hadn’t watched college football this season before coming out. Reminded me that not everyone is born into this madness. Good for them.
For the top players, I would think, it’s not about wins and loses as much as what’s this coach’s and school’s track record for getting my position in the NFL. N.C. State signed great Dline classes, not because they had a great education or had a winning program but because that coach put kids in the NFL. Nothing else mattered. The Dline coach at N.C. state had a great reputation for putting kids in the league so they went with him.
Why does Scott have such a hard time recruiting the best Dlinemen for Georgia. We have a top 15 school to offer. We have one of the top programs in the country, we play big boy ball in the SEC and we play for championships, but we don’t have a Dline coach who has really put anyone in the NFL yet so he cant recruit the best players to come play for us.
Id disagree on the Scott aspect. I get where you're going but UGA also hasnt put out DLine, WR, TE, OL, DB, etc at a consistent clip. They have history of doing each well and top tier players (Geno, AJ, etc). What has changed is the message being carried to the players. But CTS has gotten some of the best guys and his evaluation skils are top notch. But there are so many different things to weigh out... Proximity to home, city feeling (will he be comfortable), coaching staff, academic, weather (lol), depth chart, championship contender, pro output, etc.
In 2016, UGA wasn’t winning that much and Kirby turned it around.
Their are only 5 active college Head football coaches who have won a Natty at Division 1 and Texas A&M has one of them in Jimbo Fisher.
@sugarfallssummore I'd echo much of what @NoahSewellFanClub said.
But first let me add that Evans is one of the few (or only) recruits that I actually am fairly familiar with what is going on. I think Georgia is still in it but a lot depends on what happens with Evans moving forward this season.
A lot of factors go into where a kid chooses to play and each kid is different. But proximity is a huge deal. Why would a kid travel 800 miles to attend school when he has a great option 90 miles away?
Obviously it would be because of all the things UGA has to offer - especially the tradition of the RB position.
Still, proximity is sometimes very important. How easy is it for loved ones to watch you play is a big deal. My wife and I were talking about that last night. My son's grand parents would really get into the whole game day experience of watching their grandson play, but probably wouldn't be able to travel much.
And it's difficult to explain but A&M is a unique place. Almost cultish. Some absolutely love it - others not as much. My son was at the game on Saturday and said the atmosphere was incredible.
If you live in Texas you are aware of the Aggie network. Aggies help Aggies - and that is sold by the Aggie football program.
However, all that being said, if Evans takes care of his business, I still believe he has a high probability of being a Dawg. If he chooses a school other than Georgia - I believe it's because Georgia pulled back.
I agree with @Thelordjohnson. Too many variables at play. What was Schumann and Lanning's resume of sending dudes to the NFL before UGA? Non existent.
UGA hasn't had that brand exposure along the D-line the way we have with linebackers. Scott is doing his part to right the ship and I think he's doing a fantastic job so far.
Fire him!
sometimes it just takes time for a coach to grow into all aspects of the job. There is no question that Coach Tray Scott was slower than other position coaches at bringing in talent/recruiting for his position group - of course that is partly on Kirby as well. The criticism was initially on point.
However, Defensive Line recruiting has picked up - Jordan Davis two years ago and Travon Walker last year were some talent anchors to propel the momentum.
I stick to the saying, "Rome wasn't built in a day."
Great insight...and I didn’t mean to completely disregard the factors you mention above. Football aside - some kids are more willing than others to try an entirely different environment in a different part of the country for their college experience while others prefer to still be relatively close to their hometown, family, etc. My assumption (possibly incorrect) is that if a player lists a school in his final 2 that proximity to home has already been deprioritized relative to other factors.
As an aside - I lived outside Houston as a kid and definitely agree with the “cultish” nature of Texans’ devotion for T&AM in that part of the state.
Forgive me if this has been said already, but with all the talk of Evans to TAMU....I decided to take a gander at the CBs and what did I find.....the TAMU insider still has his pick in for the good guys. May be nothing but could also be telling.
Let's get this thing back on track, Z. Walker next to commit unless its a Kirby special outta nowhere.
That’s good news. Those CBs are bound to change a bunch unfortunately. Wonder if Texas is still gonna be a factor is they keep taking care of business. Hard to think they’re completely out of it
I failed to mention that the CBs should not be taken at face value 100% of the time....I just found that particular scenario odd given the latest board info.
True - many are way outdated. I think Arik Gilbert is showing 80%+ for UGA which no one believes
lol - thanks for the spellcheck @Muffingod. I’m told April has good hands but needs to work on her route running
