No way Snitker will get fired after 2 straight division titles.

Markakis serves a big purpose. A dependable .350 OBP is very valuable. Add in his high doubles rate and decent HR numbers and you have value. Just like this season you explore the options and bring him back unless there is a reliable upgrade to be had.

Agreed. He's a lifer who has been loyal and paid his dues. There have been some situational issues here and there with in game stuff but essentially no clubhouse drama. He'll be back. He's a more chill Bobby 2.0 in some ways.

I think there's a good chance we lose Wash to a manager position elsewhere. He is well thought of and has won before.

Kranitz has been a bit of a mixed bag for me. Soroka and Fried have come along well. They're going to have to decide what they want to do with Newcombe. I still see him as a starter.

It's not charity though. Other than George Steinbrenner I can't think of an owner who would have fired him at this point. Now if he fails to advance next season, it seems real possible he'll be gone.

Look at it this way: we could be the dodgers with over a $200 mill payroll who didn't get a game further than the Braves did. They spent over $80 mill this season on their starting rotation alone. Talk about some disappointment.

And then there's the Phillies who spent their "**** money" in the off-season, underachieved and then fired Kapler today.

I see your point, but I'm reminded of something somebody once said to me when I made a similar losers love company remark...''hooray, hooray, we're all going to die !''

I think/hope his time in the bullpen has got him ready to be a starter again, too. Not sure what his problems were, but his stuff is pretty darn good. If he doesn't pan out as a starter, then he can help out a lot in the bullpen. I'm wondering also If O'Day can handle a big role in the pen.

Hey, it's only about 4 months until spring training. I think I can wait, though.

    On what exactly?

What a load. You can’t legitimately help individuals who are unable to differentiate between entertainment and reality. 50k people waving their arms and chanting is not the stuff of emotional retardation in young children. If they live their whole life on a reservation instead of joining society then there’s no harm done anyway.

The Seminole tribe agreed not to be offended in exchange for the financial benefits that come from working with the University. They now claim FSU’s use to be out of reverence, but if’s all about the benjamins.

Half of the seminole tribe remains on a reservation today. Doing what exactly? Celebrating their ability to maintain their primitive roots. They have reduced themselves to being a tourist attraction. Visitors tour the reservation to view the tribe in the primordial state they maintain purely for the entertainment of visiting tourists - and the money they bring. This same lifestyle and business model is found on every reservation today, plus a casino and hotels. They all sell their culture for profit today Faux anger, imo

Maybe the trauma will be tolerable enough to give a chit be $hit by then.

    Long Extremely angry post incoming.

I kind of doubt he will, but that’s going to be another bad decision by the franchise. Snit is a noticeably bad tactical manger and if he is allowed to make any decisions next year it’s a joke. No exaggeration, I would literally do a better tactical job managing this team than he does. And I’m an idiot. managers in baseball don’t make a big difference but he’s one of the worst in the game.

Pulling fried in the 8th of game 1 was squarely on him. Fried was our second best pitcher all year, if you’re gonna put him in the pen you need to have him be a super reliever. He looked like he was gonna dominate in that role and never even got a chance. This was a really noticeable bad decision and it’s a big reason we lost game 1.

Having Kuechel and folty start two games while soroka got one was really dumb. Soroka was our best pitcher all year, both in stats and the eye test. Kuechel got the nod because he’s “a vet who’s been there” and thinking like this is the reason we continue to fall short.

Playing Markakis every chance he got and hitting him 5th all year is on him and really dumb. Granted we didn’t have great options but like maybe hit him 7th or 8th where he would belong if you have to play him. Also consistently pulling Joyce over him was probably dumb also. Nick is our worst starter and I have a bunch of meaningful statistics to back it up. I don’t wanna hear about his average (the only stat that makes him look like an average mlb player) when all the others and the eye test will tell you he’s a 4th outfielder.

These are legitimately bad decisions guys and they’re obvious and not hard to make. There are a few more that are less obviously bad I won’t hold against him but I think should be looked at closer (playing freeman for 158 games, aka why he is always nicked up, having McCan play over flowers, bad bullpen leverage decisions)

I would be interested to know how much of this is on the FO vs on the manager. But the “he’s a savvy vet” or “he’s my guy” decisions are really really freaking tired and super bad. Look at how modern so many other successful teams are, and then look at how antiquated the Braves are. The stubbornness trying to adhere to the “Braves Way” is a major reason we keep failing in the playoffs, when tactics actually matter.

We will continue to fail until the mindset of our organization shifts. We never have a top 5 team on paper (FO seems complacent with a lower tier playoff team) and we have a manager who doesn’t know how to put us in advantageous spots.

I wouldn't fire Snitker if it was my decision. He has been excellent in the regular season, I think it's too early to conclude he won't get it done in the playoffs. Another crash or 2 would change the equation.

I was more thinking as a matter of perspective rather than cheering because the dodgers lost. You can't just go out and buy a title. The Dodgers and Phillies show that. Some of their talent is homegrown to be sure it's more than just payroll. Payroll may well get you in the discussion but it isn't everything.

  • TeddyTeddy Posts: 7,109 ✭✭✭✭✭ Graduate

The Dodgers have the #4 payroll, but they lost to the #7 payroll (not a huge difference here)... Almost all champions come from a top 5-10 payroll. A few exceptions come from 10-15th payroll. But can hardly find any outside the top half. Kansas City was considered a cheap team a handful of years ago, that's the lowest payroll I could find going back many years of WS champs, and they were 16th in the league.

Also, Braves are one of the top revenue teams in baseball, outside a select few like the Yankees, so there's no reason they shouldn't have a top 10 payroll. They could sign two difference makers and get to a top 10 payroll. Just imagine this team with a true ace and take your pick of an upgrade for the other upgraded position.

Good post. Hopefully we can get a stud starter in free agency, but we gonna have to open up our checkbooks
