Burton
I think if both Smith and Burton want in, we take both. WR room needs speed to flip it and they both help there.
We need to run everything through a few questions:
1) is the wr fast?
2) can they run crisp routes?
3) can they CATCH the passes thrown to them?
4) will they be ineligible for our most important games due to fighting?
Burton/Jarrett/A Smith
we get all of them
1-3 are good points.
Number 4 isnt needed and will only cause some non-needed debate
I’d take quickness over pure speed.
Agreed. If both want in, both are takes. Crazy to think about the possibility of taking ~7 pass catchers in one class but the play in the field has dictated this necessity. Talking possible, not probable here.
They both would likely be Z WRs, but their games are so different. Burton has the demeanor of Pickens, both play with a considerable edge to their game. Burton adds 4.4 speed behind it. Almost a combo of Pickens and Smith. He’s always been my preferred choice at WR this cycle, no worst than 2nd best this class imo (Fleming at opening was insane). Smith is probably going to be a 4.2 guy when he exits college. There’s only 1-2 of those guys every other year. Ready to play day 1, no question that’s Burton. We need top end speed the most, Smith gets the nod.
Money question here, who’s most likely to have issues with their usage? It’s rhetorical but relevant. There’s only 1 ball:
You think there is a fair chance of flipping burton??
Forgot Blount...assuming he’s portal bound?
You asked:
"There’s only 1 ball:
RBs (Zeus, Cook, Mac, Milton)
TEs (Washington, TJ/Henderson, Seither, Goede, Fitz)
WRs (robertson*, Pickens, Blaylock, KJ, Tongue, Landers, Bush, Rosemy, Robinson, Burton, Wren, Smith)" end quote
Turmoil will be in the WR group, no doubt. The RBs should be fine as the lead dawg for 2020 is determined. Plus Zeus should have some added loyalty for UGA patching him up (twice). TEs would be the second in turmoil, but if Wash and TJ/Henderson get the most snaps after mid-season next, this will depend on how needy/entitled the other three are/ think of themselves.
As to WRs, I doubt Robertson is an issue. I see him as putting in his time, getting a paid education/waiting for his art to catch on. Pickens and Blaylock won't be pushed aside. Wren is likely a specialty/package player, so might be satisfied in that role. Would love for Tongue to be a contributor on the O. Bush may be a bust and KJ and Landers might be doing all they ever will. That leaves the frosh to make their mark as they can. No turmoil from these next year, but 2021 could see it.
Could be a position change coming also
I did, my mistake. No idea on portal
Anyone on campus this late has a chance of being flipped. We cooled on him earlier this cycle, that’s why he’s committed to LSU. Jeff can’t say it as directly as I can, but anyone who thinks Burton isn’t a transfer risk immediately is naive or not paying attention. Staff cooling on him had nothing to do with his on the field game.
@SoFL_Dawg @JeffSentell is Burton a EE given the fact that he has transferred so much?
