Empire Records(1995), Clerks(1994), Fear and Loathing of Las Vegas(1998), The Faculty(1998), Show Girls(1995), Joe's Apartment(1996), Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey(1991), The Boondock Saints(1999), Drop Dead Fred(1991), Dümb & Dümber(1994)
You listed it already under Independent Films but Glengarry Glen Ross for me has the best collection of actors at the top of their game in a single movie - maybe ever.
Alan Arkin - 4 noms, 1 win
Alec Baldwin - 1 nom
Ed Harris - 4 noms
Jack Lemmon - 8 noms, 2 wins
Al Pacino - 8 noms, 1 win
Jonathan Pryce - 1 nom
Kevin Spacey - 2 noms, 2 wins (batting 1.000)
That's it...that's the entire cast save some bit parts by Jude Ciccolella and Bruce Altman. 28 Oscar nominations and 7 Oscars between them - and the clean-up hitter on this list gives one of the most memorable/quoted monologues in the past 30 years.
Jack Lemmon is the GOAT in this - performance of his career, IMO and that's saying something given his resume.
PS - if you're not OK with **** language, than this will likely not be the movie for you. Playright David Mamet certainly loves him some F-bombs.
Great post. Baldwin is probably most remembered (for his ABC scene), but I agree with you about Lemmon. At some point in this thread I may post my favorite individual performances of the 90's. A few off the top of my head...
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, Jack Nicholson as Col. Nathan R. Jessep, Morgan Freeman as "Red" in Shawshank, and Heather Graham as Roller Girl!
Glad you mentioned American History X. At times difficult to watch but one of the single best performances ever by Ed Norton.
On another note this is equally deserving of a PSA for DN not to waste their time.
I was stoked for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood but it was the most boring, pointless, putrid piece of **** since Aquaman.
Biggest disappointment in years. There's nothing to even go back to & think about. It's just plain dumb & I want my 1.5hrs back.
Not going to DV but I disagree...not Tarantino's best movie by a long shot in terms of dialogue and story (the last 20 mins reminded me of the end of Inglorious Bastards) but I thought Pitt and Dicaprio were tremendous. Agree with you on American X, though. Very difficult to watch but Norton was great. He was also excellent in Fight Club & Rounders (both strong 90s movies in their own right.
Speaking of Tarantino - his popularity spawned a whole series of noveau-noir movies in the 90s that tried to copy his vibe. Two of the better ones for me were "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" (Andy Garcia and Christopher Walken) and then the Usual Suspects which was one of my favorite movies from that decade, as well.
Under rated comedy for me is Grumpy Old Men. Matthau and Lemmon were comedy gold in that one. But the cat that stole the show was Burgess.
Hey, least you make a case rather than hiding in the shadows. I really wanted to like it & gave it a honest shot but just felt like an obnoxious ode to his ego. I expected much more, especially from that outstanding cast.
You might like redheads when I prefer brunettes....it's all good
None of these movies I'm about to name are from the 90's so Off Topic
I agree with you about inglorious bastards being QT's best film until I saw "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" the other day. Wow, is all's I gots to say. "J'ango" was pretty darn good too.
1999
The Matrix & American Beauty.
*I was in college & drunk most of the time
I hear you - def not as strong as some of his others and the story itself definitely dragged.
"I love those redheads..." - Wooderson
A personal favorite. It might not win awards but I love it
Great call! It captured the moment (end of the 80's, start of a new decade) perfectly.
AnotherDawg that is an amazing list. Not sure this was on it but I watched The Rookie again last weekend starring Dennis Quaid. I’d recommend it to everyone as it is great real life story of Jim Morris and an incredible story of a baseball player and coach who made it to the MLB at 35. Met him at a conference in Nashville earlier this month the same night the tornadoes hit.
