For fans of fantasy I highly recommend the Traitor Son Cycle by Miles Cameron the first in the series is "The Red Knight" great characters , action and pace. For historical fiction fans I recommend the Chivalry series by Christian Cameron starting with the "Ill made Knight" these are the same author and I have no reason why he uses two names..but both are great series.
I'm a big fan as well. Have read almost all of his non-fiction books.
You're right, and that's why I added the notes to my list for you. When a series becomes successful some writers accede to the publisher's wishes and pump out a lot of books. Piers Anthony's Xanth trilogy is great, but I can't vouch for the 40 books that came after that, because I didn't read them.
Most of the series I recommended were trilogies, and your son could read any one of them very quickly if he enjoys it. LMK if you decide to give The Book of Three a try. (That's the first book in the Prydain series.)
just finished the first Mistborn trilogy this morning. really enjoyed it. first Sanderson I have read
I just recently started the Wheel of Time series so I'll be buried in those for a while but I'll have to add that one to my list.
@lmiked7 now that I think of it the Traitor Son cycle would be a great counter to the Wheel series , Wheel has much more detail as is several thousand pages longer but Traitor moves much quicker and has some very well developed characters, and more humor .
I'll have to give it a shot once I finish WoT. I'm only on the first one but I could see myself realistically finishing it by the end of the year.
I'm generally willing to try out any Fantasy series so long as it's finished or very close to it. George RR Martin has scarred me on that front lol.
Ok last comment , if you haven't tried the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher look into them . Great character and funny as heck ...for a wizard.
Those are good. I haven't picked up one of those books in several years. Did Butcher ever write anymore and/or finish the series? They sort of just kept on going.
He has book 16 Peace Talks coming out July 14th ..
Some great suggestions in here! I'm stocking up on my books for June beach trip!
If you want a good beach read, it's hard to beat "One Second After" (2009) by William Forstchen. It hooks you on the first page and never lets go. I also liked that the plot was centered in Black Mountain, NC, where my sons did summer camp for several years.
Best sports book I've read in the past 10 years was "The Boys in the Boat" (2013) by Daniel James Brown.
I'm a little late to the jonathan franzen party, but I just finished freedom and it's the definition of the great american novel
Thank you @AnotherDawg !
I need more suggestions! I always need good stuff to read in the offseason, though my teammates on the DawgNation team write so much I have to keep up with them, too!
Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning. Listening to Audio book on YouTube. Middle aged WW 2 German soldiers relegated to police action in Poland. Too old for the Front, they are asked to do bad things to civilians, Author researches history and applies psychology to examen behavior,
on YouTube you can start by hearing the author’s lectures, That is how I learned of Robert Caro too.
@AnotherDawg Which summer camp? I taught homesteading at Rockmont 2015-2018.
My boys did Timberlake, but I know Rockmont well. So many great camps in that part of the country. Their mom did Merri-Mac when she was young.
Kudos to you for being a counselor. I played sports year round when I was young so I never got to enjoy the camp life. I'm very glad my sons were able to do it. Great experience.
Been knocking out a lot of audiobooks the last couple months. Mostly trying to hit classics I never got around to
on the road by Jack kerouac
1984 by George Orwell
moby dick by Herman Melville
the sandman by Neil gaiman (different kind of classic haha)
yesterday I started Ulysses by James Joyce
i bought 13 books plus another 12-15 from the Plus catalog that came out last week so my backlog is a BIT overwhelming lol
If it ever cools down a bit I can start back running. That’ll help help knock out the backlog
It is hot as blue blazes and down here in south Ga the mosquitoes are awful. I’m ready for cool weather too!
