Overall, to me, he's pitched like an ace. No one goes undefeated as a starter, but for the last 6 weeks or so he's been close. I'll be happy if he can just keep it up - doesn't need to improve too much for me.
Honestly, Julio has been terrific since the beginning of May.
From May 5 - June 13, a stretch of 8 games, Julio posted a 0.81 ERA over 44.2 innings.
He gave up 13 runs over the next 2 games, just 8 innings pitched.
Then from June 29 until last night, a stretch of 10 games, he posted a 2.83 ERA over 54 innings. If you remove his aberration from last Thursday (1.1 innings, 7 ER), that number drops to a 1.88 ERA.
He has given up 16 home runs and has what, four games left? His career low since he became a full-time starter for homers allowed is 22. Julio has been our second most consistent pitcher this year, especially since he got going in May. I think he starts Game 3 in the NLDS.
@CTDawg I'm not so sure Julio isn't pitching game 2. But there isn't a huge separation between Kuechel, Fried, and Julio other than Dallas's playoff experience.
Even great pitchers ( Maddux being an exception) have a game here and there where they seemingly can't get anybody out. If we keep getting 7 good starts for every bad start from Julio he'll be a big net plus.
Checking in on how we're doing with Bobby Cox's approach of winning every series down the stretch.
We've gone 7-0-1 in series going back to July 26th. We split a 4 game series at The Marlins and won the other 7 outright. It's not like we've beaten lightweights either.
I have never been a fan of they guy but will have to say based on the eye test he looks overall to have it all together this year.
He'll never wow you with his WHIP rating but this is a bottom line business to the extreme. A result is a result, Julio is getting them now.
Julio might go down as the most under appreciated Brave ever. He generally always gives the Braves a chance to win. He’s not a #1 ace type, but is a solid #2-3 starter that had to be the ace in the early to mid 2010s (because the Braves are cheap). His prime (not that he isn’t still solid) was spent on awful Braves teams.
I am very interested to see how Folty does Friday night against the Mets with it being his next start since the Dodgers. He has me worried that he may slip back into way he was pitching prior to being moved down. He gave up a big homer and then let it get to him too much and did not get himself reeled back in for the next batter and served up another homer. His body language tells the tale for me and has me up the air on where he is headed, does anyone see the same thing or am I looking to deep?
Does Folty see a sports psychologist? If he doesn't, he should.
If management isn't doing everything they can to get Folty's head right then they are being penny wise and dollar dumb. If they had to pay a sports psychologist around the clock to get him where he needs to be mentally it would be well worth it.
Folty only gave up two earned runs against the Dodgers but only one was a homer. He does throw a lot of pitches and not usually all that efficiently.
Yeah, I guess I was attributing Folty with the 2 HR that Newcomb gave up the night before when looking back. My bad, but the point does remain that he only lasted into the 4th and was clearly up and down with his pitching.
I thought that's what you meant. Newcomb has been pretty good for us as of late, but once in a while he just comes in and performs really badly. Relievers can't walk people, it just leads to so much trouble.
My knowledge of teams/players outside of the Braves is limited (one could argue it’s not good for the Braves too lol) but with B-Mac hurt does anyone see them going after Francisco Cervelli? I don’t know about his defense but his offense is respectable if he can stay healthy. Or would we be better served calling someone up?
