I believe you did. And I don’t wanna jump ahead but this also shows the importance of a James Williams in 2021 with his size at safety because of these freak TEs this class
Beat you to it 😎
That was fast
Do we really think AG/DW/TJ will be "plus asset"s in the run game?
two ways to look at that really.
1) what you are suggesting - that Nauta was overrated and crap.
2) Nauta came to UGA all starred up and left Athens undeveloped and lost thousands to millions of dollars because of it.
Do you want to be UGA arguing Point#1 - Or - an SEC competitor negative recruiting UGA w/ Point#2? Which do you think a 17ry old kid is likely to believe?
Nauta earned his ranking by playing at IMG academy and toasting basically everyone he went against during 1on1s at camp play. He had superb routes. But he’s a 4.9 TE and well those guys just fare differently at the next level. We’re talking NFL here
Nauta is not athletic enough for the modern game. He's an old-school tight end. He can do a lot in the running game (he did) but he just isn't capable of getting open against athletic defenders. Overrated? Nah, would've been a great player 10 years ago. No fault on Nauta or on UGA, not everything has to be someone's fault
Edit: Either way, the selling point for AG, TJ, or DW should be that we don't have and have never had a guy like them. Athleticism is unteachable, can't teach the 4.4 OJ Howard was running in HS; blocking, route running, point of attack, can be taught.
Nauta was a solid TE.
He was open a ton and Fromm just didn't want to throw to him.
Fromm is scared of the middle of the field.
TEs are a HUGE asset in the run game. How many run gaps are there with no TEs?
How many run gaps with 1 TE? How many run gaps with 2 TEs? Do you not see the advantage?
Now, what if those 2 great blocking TEs that just helped create 2 more gaps are also really good receivers? How do you defend it?
Maybe you have the great James Williams and he turns out to be really, really good. You may have just helped cover Darnell. But who covers Theo on the other side? What if Theo is lined up on the same side as Darnell? Do you have another 6'5" safety or a LB that can cover Theo?
Then, lets assume mister DC, that Georgia hasn't thrown to their TEs through the first quarter. But they have been hammering you with Milton, Zeus and Mac. You have been yelling at your safeties and LBs to make sure and stop the run.
Then Beck play actions to Milton, your 6'5" safety bites on the play action and so did your 5* LB. Darnell hits the seam and Theo runs a corner post.
The next day you'll run to your head coach and say, I take everything back...we absolutely have to start heavily recruiting big, athletic TEs because I don't have an answer for them.
Undeveloped in his 40 time eh?
And Nauta could get away with running a 4.9 if he was 6'6" like Jason Witten.
Good point, I believe Nauta measured at exactly 6'3 coming out. DW measures in at nearly 6'8
Behold the wet blanket.
You probably need to stop posting and listen more.
