??? Is Justin Flowe not an option ?
Yeah, but did anyone on the Gamecock site post a GIF of a kid with a mug?
Side note, it looks too warm for the kid to be drinking coco and he's too young for coffee. So what is he drinking? I might need to start a post ESD thread investigation.
Funny you ask that...
He is a Early Signing Day recruit, these seem to be National Signing Day (2/5) offers (to me).
Late Offers (my opinion)
Basically, Best Player Available (BPA) type if needed. If needed by attrition post bowl game via either draft or portal (or both).
These potential ILB will not add a “24th scholly” regardless of what happens post bowl at ILB.
They will simply move the ILB position group up a notch or two in the BPA options come NSD.
I think we could see 1-3 potential BPA schollys available come NSD. Depends on how ESD shakes out. Where positions are slotted here will be based on ESD and attrition.
(dont be shocked for more to come out today too, even at other positions).
(Sometimes these offers can also be a favor to a coach or school to help bring a kid pub, recognition for a good senior year too)
Speculating here because I don’t know. Sometimes it’s best to just consider the tea leaves.
We know draft grades are coming back this week. We know it’s been Sewell or bust all cycle at ILB. We know we have let more highly ranked LBs walk by lessening the recruiting efforts, then a new offer goes out at LB.
I just watched the film, good player, his competition looks overmatched. Big kid. Probably 3-4 guys we could’ve had that demonstrate a bit more pop on highlights. Staff hasn’t been on these guys because it wasn’t a need. Maybe there is a need now.
My speculative guess is that Rice got a NFL draft grade that he is strongly considering. My other guess would be attrition is coming at the position, likely from someone who has experience. I don’t think this has anything to do with missing on a a target for 2020.
Hate seeing the need now when we probably had a legit shot of Flowe all along if we wouldn’t have been so laser focused on Sewell. It is what it is I suppose. Life in recruiting.
I am not in that room and I don’t know the high stakes poker that those guys play. When is it better to focus more on maybe “slightly” less talent that wants to be there vs best talent out there (example Tank vs Evans). I don’t know when do they make a judgment call and say “well he wants to be here and it’s super close so let’s go with B. Vs A”. I not in the room so I can’t speculate. I just wonder some times. I think we would have got Flowe if we had prioritized him personally. And UGA is kink of LBU.
I know it was mentioned early on but haven't heard much since: wasn't Sherman getting looks at ILB? Kind of reminded me of a Q. Walker type when I first heard it mentioned. These recent offers make me think no. I think it'd be easier to find a twitchy pass rusher than ILB. Just spitballing here
Sherman is going to be an olb. He's built almost exactly like Nolan Smith is.
Think of it this way, if its Rice going pro. Staff wasnt fully expecting him to have the type of season he had. They figured he would be good but come back for senior year, which allowed them to go all in on Sewell.
Rice balled out and the NFL scouts liked his game enough to give him a favorable grade. Young man earned it and deserves a shot if they believe he has what it takes. This is a blessing for both Rice, for obvious reasons, but also for UGA. Shows we put LBs in the league too, which helps in ‘21 and ‘22 recruiting.
Simply put would you rather of Rice had a so-so season so him came back, or him ball out and kirby go for the best prospect on their board and potentially have to “settle” down the line ?
(Also, Kirby isnt offering some dud. They do their homework. If you point to the early 3stars who havnt panned out, well those were more desperation of a new class and staff vs attrition)
I would challenge you to try to focus less on the actual outcome and focus more on the intent. Focus more on why the decision was made in the first place. We’ve seen the second guessing at RB this year, and before it goes heavy on LB consider this...
Is Flowe considerably different from anyone we have in our room now? When you watch his film, how often is he playing in space? Would he be a good fit as a nickel backer? How often does he wrap up when he tackles? Can he consistently blow up offense players in the SEC without wrapping up?
Did/do we have anyone that looks like Sewell? Is there a LB that can be an edge in Nickel, ILB in Nickel, ILB/OLB in base package? What would signing our first Polynesian player do to open up the pipeline for that culture? Versatility matters when it’s a deep room. Not all player’s skills are created equal.
RB is the same. Lazy argument to say we made a mistake on Tank. If you think you got your first 2 choices wrapped up you allow others to walk. No one could’ve predicted a kid would box one of his coaches.
This kid is from my home town. We just won the state championship in single A. Small school but its loaded with talent. Glad DJ got an offer. The kid is a beast
He’s considered a combo backer but, kid is walking around at 240ish now. Could easily be 250+ in a year. I think he stays more in the edge. We have a few guys who could slide into ILB or edge. Some do it now (AA and Quay).
In a pinch, Reese could float down to ILB as well. That said, I’m not sure any of our LB groups should draw concern. We have too much depth.
3 years ago if someone said Beal wouldn’t make an impact here and transfer out before making an impact, the freak out would’ve been on level 8. His transfer was barely a blip on the radar. We lost another 5 star earlier this year. At no point did anyone say “Cox would’ve made that play”.
Were still deep tbh. Assume Rice declares, Quay and Dean start. Tindall and Trez look to backup on the two deep. Where’s R. Davis, AA, Reese, these guys still aren’t fixtures in the rotations.
you also made a good point earlier this year about Justin Flowe...he was a kid coming from California who was probably only going to play on special teams and not get in games...we don't think that kid is a portal possibility?
staff made the right call going all in on Noah...sometimes you don't win 'em all
Amen. I’ll say it because no one else has. The most overrated five star imo is Justin Flowe for this cycle. I agree he should be a top 50 player, but top 10 i dont see.
He’ll be a good player, maybe a great one, but I recall some saying he remind them of Ray Lewis. Ray Lewis doesn’t skip the line in a drill to compete against a lesser talent for starters. Ray Lewis doesn’t stop competing at camp because he felt he was too heavy for the space drills.
Noah Sewell didn’t either...covering TEs and WRs at 271 lbs during the opening.
