Outside of the NEED for two top RB's in this class, you could make an argument that Gilbert is at least a "top 3" need to get into this class. JMO. This kid has the ability to be a game changer in an offense that will utilize his talent - whether at WR or at TE
This has been said, but TN is selling him the opportunity to play WR. He’s smart enough to know that won’t last once he gets on campus. He’s also smart enough to know his NFL position will be TE. I’m confident our staff will be able to close this one out.
Rusty has proven he’s one of the best in the biz, I’ll never question his first hand info. Reading above, id laser in on the use of “today”. If picking today, Rusty would pick the creamsicles. Fine, they’ve provided a new message that is resonating with Gilbert. ESD isn’t today and we’ve been in this a long time. Is another 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 season enough to keep Gilbert? I think watching both teams during the season only benefits us. Also there’s buzz that Bailey is shaky for creamsicles at best. As for his other teammates headed there, the reality is there’s no room here for them in the class. Rusty is right, we need to get him back on campus while still showing how we we’ll use TEs this season.
I’ll be clear, staff wants Gilbert, period. The attention recently shown to others may be playing a part here but that’s speculation (just saving that’s floating out there). Time will tell. Let them shoot their shot now.
Lastly, just my opinion but something to watch going forward. Pruitt is a defensive coach. Last year, we battled over Avantae Taylor WR/DB out of TN. He chose TN to play WR. He was playing DB by his second week on campus. Real colors may show here quickly, you know Pruitt has to be salivating of putting Gilbert at DE/OLB.
@SoFL_Dawg Great points, especially in your final paragraph.
Pruitt may not do the full offense to defense flip but you could almost guarantee if Gilbert were to arrive on campus, within a month the convo of “we really could use a dynamic player like you ..... at TE”, adios WR spot.
I do believe its real noise, but not enough for Rusty to put his CB stamp on it ?
As been stated, not over and Tenn is shooting it shot. Lets see the season playout And get him on campus for the big July weekend.
Ive dropped the mug here previously. I stand by that confidence that we will “sign” Gilbert and another elite TE prospect.
It's crap like this right here--or the Roquan situation where they lied about his coach leaving--that makes me wholly favor allowing these kids one free transfer.
They have that chance now basically. The elite kids won’t sit and wait especially if they have been lied to or at least feel that way. We have been bit by the transfer bug and if programs like TN want to give false hope to kids, it will bite them too. Give what we know from this forum I’ve got complete confidence in any target Kirby and Co. go after, even if we don’t get everyone.
