Stop knocking the “complaining”
It’s the first game of the year national championship expectations. Our own coach talked about havoc and being more prolific and scoring points. That’s why tonight is a little bit of a let down. Doesn’t make us any less fans. In my opinion which doesn’t mean a lot we’re all starved for that national title. Just out talenting teams isn’t going to cut it. @texdawg this isn’t aimed at you specifically, I get your a coach and appreciate your knowledge but not everyone looks at things the same way this place would be boring if they did. From watching it live all this talk of DO MORE and I feel like we just did the same. But hey college football is back and there should be less talk about off topic stuff. Got the W tonight and football is back, everyone enjoy the rest of your weekend and GO DAWGS!

We basically ran a G Day offense and won super comfortably. I'm sure we could've been more explosive if we wanted to but why show our real competition anything if we don't have to?
We weren't perfect tonight, but we really good in most areas. The bad wasn't horrible and those areas minimal. The college football season is a marathon and we're starting it 2 miles ahead of most everyone we're going to play. In my opinion, the complaining seems a bit much because we're comparing how we want the team to be playing at the end to how we played in game one. That's completely unrealistic. If we don't see improvement in a month, let the complaints rain down. But until then, R-E-L-A-X. We're really really good and we might be great by the end of the season.
Should've expected a game like this. The team was knocking the kinks out as well as Comfortably coasting. Swift had an incredible game and the defense was tough. The runs outside are ideal when you have the fast OLBs and hard hitters a safety (avoid the middle). I also saw a lot of spy blitz, stunt blitz, etc so I think the ability for havoc is going to increase week by week. The most important thing to remember is UGA showed some difference in play tonight which will have the next few opponents thinking differently on how to defend them. I think they'll show a different style the next two week (first half) and then unleash the whole book against ND.
Sidenote: Kirby wouldn't run up score when he's pretty good friends with Mason. There was no need 21 points with a 5 back rotation was too much for a vandy to comeback from.
I guess we have to start with defining havoc? By Kirby’s definition of havoc, I think they did a pretty good job. It was a dominant performance overall. There were 61 defensive snaps last night, and without rewatching the game, I think there were ~10-15 havoc plays or so (QB hurries, tips, screen stop, fumble recover, sack, blocked FG (even though it went in)). At best that’s creating havoc ~25% of defensive snaps and at worst ~16% of defensive snaps. Very hard to argue with that.
Tackling could’ve been better but be mindful that K. Vaughn is likely the best RB we’ll see in regular season. He took a few for a ride last night. 15 for 74 at 4.9 YPC, solid work by the D.
Pinckney and Lipscomb had combined receptions of 5 catches for 19 yards, equating to ~ 4 yards per catch.
So brings me back to the question of the definition of havoc. If measuring by sacks and TOs exclusively, average game.
Offensively, I agree that we could’ve done more. Eye test, I don’t think I’ve seen a Kirby team in a rhythm as much as they were for the first 25 mins of the game. Versatility with play calling, dominant up front, Jake was money, 10 different players touched the ball, and that equates to being unstoppable.
I do think the pace was slower than I anticipated, but that’s an indicator that Kirby doesn’t fully trust this team yet and with his standards, he may never really trust them.
Overall, I’d grade it out as an A last night.

Well we didn’t play like Florida last week. So there’s that.
Sure the offense sputtered a little in the second half, but maybe they didn’t want to empty the whole playbook when they have a comfortable lead.
I agree with this. But will admit , I'd like to see the killer instinct a little more. Or better put, if its clicking and they can't stop it, we dont stop it.
I too wanted to see more last night, but it didn’t happen. I think all the overreacting from one game is silly. We were getting the kinks out. There’s no preseason in college football.

The only 1st down came on a 3 yard rush by Herrien on THE FIRST drive of the game.
I’m not sure if it’s the plays being offered to Jake as options or if he put us in the wrong play or audible. Also, you must factor in Vandy’s defensive scheme a bit.
However, will all that said, this is something that MUST be improved on and it seems it has been brought over from last season. Remember the 11 plays vs Florida inside the 5 last year? And it carried on for the remainder of the season on short yardage situations, especially on 3rd & 4th.
Bash and/or downvote all you want but these are the facts. Granted we’ve got time to work on it but come on, this is a recurring problem that shouldn’t be happening with the OL we have.

It's pretty typical to overreact to one game when you only have one have to react to.
I think having rewatched (almost) all of last year's games fairly recently changes our view a little. A lot of what I thought was missing from last season, I saw either improvement or potential for improvement last night. The run defense, while not perfect, was clearly better. Plus, I saw enough from Quay that I think he'll be a player. And if Dean is healthy, I think Tae will see minimal reps by mid season. Add in Monty looking a step faster and I'm happy with where our inside backers and and will be soon enough. That was a huge concern from last season for me.
As not to go on too long, I thought the defense looked really fast last night. With reps and cleaning up penalties, I think this defense will be great by November and December (and January?).
Mark Richt has lost control of the complaining
I'm no football expert, but that one play where Vandy's RB took Tae Crowder for a ride hurt to watch.
I thought we were explosive on our first 3 possessions (all tds), then we sat on the lead. Defense played really well, except for some stup!d penalties.
There was no way Kirby was going to run up the score on Derek Mason, he respects him way more than that. However, there are plenty of opponents on our schedule that, I think, Kirby will have no problem running up the score on.
I used to buy this logic but people were saying the exact same thing last year before the LSU game. We got down in that game and couldn't make the explosive plays needed for a comeback. I'm just tired of this excuse and what plays could they possibly run that opposing coaches couldn't find tape on from the past few seasons?
